1-week stopover in India

I'm flying to Bangkok in February and the cheapest flights I found have a stopover in Mumbai or New Delhi.

Would it be worth staying in India for a week and checking out the city I fly into and some neighbouring region such as Goa?

I know it's not nearly enough to see the country but a lot of people say that you either love or hate it and I thought it'd make sense to get a taste of the country to see if I'd want to come back in the future for a longer, dedicated trip.

    Yeah, may as well.

If you can choose where you're going, I'd opt for Mumbai and spend a few days in Goa or another nearby region. Delhi has a lot of historical sites, but it's also--bar-none--the worst introduction to India that first-time visitors could have. It's filthy, polluted, and crowded, and there are touts near every major attraction.

Both Goa and Mumbai have the same sorts of problems, but they're note quite as bad. Do be aware that Goa has an infamous "taxi mafia" that effectively controls non-private transportation in and around the beaches, so you'll end up paying more to get to your hotel than you would just about anywhere else in India.

If you have no choice but to go to Delhi, I'd recommend heading out to either Rajasthan or the Himalayas, depending on the weather at that time of year.

Realistically, you're only going to be able to see 1-2 different places--probably very typical, over-touristed places that are chock-full of touts and con artists. Nevertheless, you could have a fun time.
Alternatively, you could be a right c**t and just hop on a cheap domestic flight somewhere else, be it Kerala, Karnataka, or some ooga-booga city in Telangana or Odisha.

You will have to pick and choose, though. If you only have a week, you should either stay in the same city and make a day-trip somewhere nearby, or piss off ASAP. Everything takes time in India, and simply traveling to and from Goa from Mumbai would eat up 10-15 hours each way (unless you're flying).

Can you tell me which of these is a better moyorcycle route for someone who wants
      >scenery and nature
      >as few people as possible
      >some off the beaten path indian history/temples/monuments but if theyre less impressive thats ok as long as they have less touts/scams
      >nicest locals/safety

      Route A: Agra - Gwalior - Indore - Dhule - Mumbai

      Route B: Agra - Jaipur - Ajmer - Jodhpur - Udaipur - towards Mumbai

Agra is literally the opposite of all your requirements
I would recommend udaipur, it's pretty great

Agra would be just like..pass through and done. Have to go that way anyway basically. Coming from Nepal so only other option is stick to the mountains and hook around from rishikesh on the north side of dehli. So no Agra? Not even for half a day?

Thanks anon for the detailed replied, it really cleared some things up. I'll look into Kerala and the other regions and choose one of those most likely.

These places are not really different than the rest of India

NO! Stay in the airport for a few hours until your next flight to Thailand. Why waste a week in an absolute shithole when you can spend that extra time in Bangkok?

It’s basically a free trip to a country you otherwise wouldn’t visit. It’s a risk-free way to travel. I’ve done exactly this in Bangladesh and sri lanka and regret nothing.

        >It’s basically a free trip to a country you otherwise wouldn’t visit
I have visited there and I would never go back even if it was a free trip. Thailand is much nicer in every way than India. Why you would sacrifice an entire week to stay in a smelly rubbish dump full of moronic, rude people who want to scam you, when you could stay in Thailand with relatively friendly people, superior infrastructure, nice food and interesting things to do and see is beyond me.

OP if you are transiting through an Indian airport on your way to Thailand then find a quiet part of the airport and relax for a few hours. Board your onward flight to Bangkok and don't waste your time or money in India.

these posts are scaring me. I am booked for Nepal and plan a dip through india to a wedding near mumbai then onto Sri lanka... Im afraid if Ill even make it..everyone is doom posting me. Most hardcore Ive done so far is rural Laos. Can india be more hardcore? Ive heard people just come up and touch white people so Im thinking of buying pepper spray in nepal.

        >everyone is doom posting me. Most hardcore Ive done so far is rural Laos.
I'm not saying India is 'hardcore' most pajeets are cowards and will only start something if they are drunk and in a large group. But the air literally stinks of shit, piss and rotting garbage. Sidewalks are unwalkable, roads are a mess, their trains stink, their railway stations stink, their infrastructure is old and crumbling and the people are the most ignorant, moronic, rude morons I have ever encountered. The food is dodgy and every auto (tuktuk) driver is out to rip you off. There is just absolutely nothing enjoyable or remotely pleasant about the place. Having been there I can see why so many pajeets are desperate to leave that shithole and come to the west. Also people don't randomly touch white people, but they will bump into you and push against you and in front of you in crowded places. If you go around pepper spraying people in India you will find yourself in a world of trouble. Best avoid the country altogether.

I haven’t been but pretty sure India is perfectly safe. Just hard to travel through given the reasons above

You’re probably LARPing, and so are they. For the last 5-6 years, I’ve asked everyone who posts memes about how awful India is to post a time stamped pic of their India entry stamp or exit stamp. Only one person has ever done it.

95%+ of people poston here don’t travel and have never been to India. They’re just regurgitating /misc/ memes

Some people like India, most don't. It is objectively a shithole, nobody can deny that part. No need to get so butthurt. I have been to India as well, years ago, and it's one of the few places I have no interest in returning to. Yes there are many things to see and do and everyone should check it out once, but it's perfectly understandable why many people don't like it.

This is true, i think you shouldn't seek such advice from anonymous forums where anyone can LARP. reddit and SighSee are both terrible sites to seek advice from, you are better off reading reviews from tripadvisor or airbnb.

            >Some people like India, most don't

Wut? It's probably the opposite, tourism to india went from like 2 million a year to 12 million a year (prior to covid) in about 10-15 years. A good chunk of those were simply indians who settled abroad going back to india, but even if you take into account actual tourists, their numbers grew exponentially in last 15 years. India is no doubt not an easy destination but most people like it. It's probably not their favorite destination though.

This. Another thing, there are too many Indians immigrants in my country. I love Indians, but stay in India. If I wanted to live in Bombay I would. Indians can't into western culture and it's embarrassing. Another thing, the country has no great writers, artists, musicians, which is odd considering the size of the population, they are not intellectual at all.

I have been watching Indian travel channels (by Indians for Indians) since they make them in English too. It looks kind of cosy.
