20 years old, $1k travel budget. Where should I go?

>20 years old

>never been out of country before

>want to travel before while I can

>budget: $1000 dollar (probably a little more and not including flights)

A rich family member has offered to let me use their airline miles. Was thinking either Japan or someplace in Europe

What do I need to know? About how long could I stay out of country for on a low budget? Should I get a one way ticket, and just return when I run out of budget? Thoughts?

A thousand dollars? Can you even buy plane tickets for within the country? Nevermind crossing the biggest oceans in the world.

Japan is locked so you aint going there

$1000 is pretty low, your dollar will go further in Eastern Europe.
Check out tourist attractions in Hungary or Romania and see if anything jumps out at you.

If OP only has $1000 to buy tickets AND go to Europe he's gonna have to slum it in $10-a-night hostels and hitchhike everywhere if he wants to spend any more than 3 days.

His budget doesn’t include flights because he’s using miles. $40 per night at a hotel for a week is $280, leaving a bit over $100 per day to spend.

Dont listen to the gays in here OP. 1000$ is a nice budget if flights are already paid. Dont know about Japan, eastern europe is pretty cheap. Also western Europe is possible if you live in hostels and dont eat too expensive. Have fun mate

don't listen to any of these homosexuals here just find a country without major restrictions, book the flight, and take vacation for two weeks with your thousand bucks.

$1000 is plenty OP depending on how long your staying. I did 2 months travelling around SEA for about £1000 (which is more than $1000), buy that was incpuding flights. I would recommend SEA as babies first trip on that budget, especially if flights are getting payed for.

Check where you need visas for. If you're american I assume most countries are either visa free or 'visa on arrival', which basically means you just go to a counter and pay like $20-$30 when you arrive in the airport/border of their country, no problem. Trying to get other kinds of visa are iften a hassle so don't bother with that for your first time.

Your visa free period, or visa will generally be like 30 days so you need to leave the country before then, but often you can just hop over to a nextdoor country to stamp your passport out, then stamp yourself right back in to renew the visa free period.

If you're going to be away for a month+ then only get a one way ticket, but flight prices can go up a lot or availability can change the closer you get to the day, so if you're not very flexible on the day you need to be back then make sure to buy your return ticket at least a couple weeks in advance.

It'll be better for your budget and enjoyment if you go to hostels. Make sure to update us when you're back with lots of juicy greentexts.

I just came to say that I`m 45 and still travel at least twice a year… so it`s not like you`re exactly running out of time.

I wouldn't recommend more than a week anywhere with only 1k. You could easily stretch it in cheaper countries but with your lack of experience its a gamble tbh
Go to Japan for a week, you'll have fun, just don't be a dipshit with your money.
Some may disagree with me but my tips
    >just pay for accommodation before you go, better to have certainty than trying to haggle when you get there
    >don't eat every single meal in a restaurant, corner stores like 7/11, Lawsons, Family Mart have affordable food for breakfast/lunch
    >JR pass isn't necessary for one week
    >don't forget that a passport costs money - in my country around $400 (Australian)
    >research what you need to buy for your trip - for one week in a developed country it shouldn't cost too much - i.e. you don't need to carry a first aid kit or anything like that
    >hostels are a good experience for meeting people - at the age of 20, don't be a b***h and go for a bedroom hotel room, meet people and have fun (and save money)

A meal in france is around 10 euros so if you dont cook expect to spend around 25 euros per day for food. Airbnb in advance is around 50 euros per night.
10 euros per day for tourist shit.
85 euros to spend per day.
You will be fine even in western europe for like 2 weeks.

Why the frick everyone mocking the 1000 dollar? I can travel accros different cities in europe with that money. Let's calculate

Let's make a 1 month plan. Let's say you stay in the hostels every night but sometimes you sleep in airports because you land at night, or your flight too early and you came at night. So let's make 10 days airport.

-You need to stay in hostels for 20 days. Cheapest hostels mostly around 12-17 Euro. Let's say 15 Euro as average.
    15*20= €300

-You need to eat something for every morning and afternoon. Most of the places that you can eat is around 4-10 Euro. Let's say you will eat from the cheapest place. Every meal 5 Euro.
    2*5*30= €300

-/You need to buy tickets. Making a flight plan is so fricking easy. All you need to do is using skyscanner. Just use it and connect the diffirent cities. Every flight is around 12 Euro if you buy them too lste. Let's say you will go to 15 diffirent city.
    15*12= €180
And let's add public transport on this money. I think you would expend around 100-150 Euro for transportation. So let's say 125 for public transport.

    300+300+180+125= €905
Those are the primary needs. I think it's enough you want to see around.

Only SEA countries I can help with are Vietnam and Cambodia. Vietnam is great but a little trickier than say Japan, locals will try to rip you off - a foreigner has more money therefore should pay more money - is the mentality.
Monolingual is fine, use something like google translate if you have to but most things these days have english language options like menus and taxi apps.
Visas aren't really a big deal for getting between countries but I admit ignorance on the current state of covid restrictions.
If you've never travelled before and are from a reasonably wealthy country you may experience a bit of culture shock, read up on living conditions before you go - I remember the things that took me off guard the first time I went to a poorer country was things like - you can't drink tap water, you can't flush toilet paper, when crossing the road you just walk in front of the millions of mopeds and hope for the best, etc - that being said, trying new things and seeing a different world is an awesome experience.

1000 bucks and 1 week isn't worth it to go to Japan, though I know the allure having been there 3 times already.

I say go to Mexico, honestly. If your more adventurous, Colombia.

But it seems you want a grand cultural experience. Mexico has a lot, but if you're from the US it's easy to feel like you pretty much get it, which isn't true.

I recommend having a credit card. 1000 cash, use the card where you can, save the cash as much as possible. Use your family members miles, but get a travel card and save money + get 150 or 200 bucks back at the end.

With such a small budget, you need to plan round trip. Being anxious about affording things = bad trip. Get the round trip ticket so you know you are coming home even if you overspend (thats also why a CC is important to bring). Look into open jaw flights.

Europe and Japan are expensive. If you want to go, save up more. Japan at the moment is not a good place for tourism. You can only go on a packaged, guided trip, and the slots for these are minimal. That's not how you want to explore Japan or any country for your first time.

Trust me, go to Puerto Vallarta and or Cancun for a week. Cancun gets a lot of shit, but it's beautiful and there's is plenty to do in the area. Puerto Vallarta also is pretty cliché and a commonly used tourist destination, but it's cost effective and also just a great area to explore and have fun without blowing your budget.

Learn a little of the language of the country you visit. Keep a notebook. Don't be afraid to speak to locals. Download the offline version of the language of the country you are visiting in Google translate, and also and offline map.

You can go to FB groups and Reddit to find other travelers to meet up with, or expats to show you around, or locals who speak English and who just love their city and want to show you the best of it.

You won't go wrong with Thailand.

I recommend holding out on Vietnam until you have more experience under your belt. It's an amazing place, been all over it, but it's not built for foreign travelers the way Thailand is. Unfortunately you just missed Songkran. You could've spent a full week having water gun fights in the streets with thousands of others.

    Frick this gay thread

Literally go anywhere in the world you want, use hostelworld and sort by cheapest. Eat only fastfood and talk to no one. Never leave your hostel except to go to the #1 tourist spot on google for that area, after youve mustered the courage. Spend the rest of your time jerking off in your hostel bed to the fact that people you know are back home being wage cucks while youre living the dream in the most cool place on the planet. Start calling yourself a world travler, open mspaint and start a “Real Traveler’s Map” thread so that every knows that you have been to tokyo AND kyoto. Have your weeb dreams crushed. Feel the wisdom flow through you. Now that youre back home, change your tinder profile to picures of you in the other country, but dont put “travel” in interests. You want only girls who can see how much of a chad you are because youve been in front of the tokyo tower. Get a job so you can one day buy the holy “gaming pc”. Once you get that, you’ll be happy. Just like you thought youd be happy if you traveled. Once I finish my degree I’ll be real, I’ll be complete, I’ll be worthy. They’ll see. I’ve been to japan. Theyve never been to japan, the swine. They probably dont even know what omaiwamu shinderu means the absolute philistines. Would it kill them to become even a little cultured like I am. Why are no women cultured any more? They used to have class and grace, now they only want men who treat them bad. I’m a gentleman, why cant they see that? I travel and I watch youtube videos about philosophy. If only they’d stop being b***hES. They’d see. They’d all see. Even the gays on SighSee, the ones who called me an autist for making a stupid thread like this, with no purpose other than to gratify my adolecent self-worth. No purpose but the tell the world, to scream from the top of a tower “I matter! I exist! I can go to ANY country I want to as long as there are not any spooky blacks. I’ll make them see.

Go to Eastern Europe or Southeast Asia. Western Europe and Japan I don’t really think that’s feasible. Maybe if you stayed at a hostel.
