3 month trip to Prague

Yo what are some good genuine places to enjoy there? Travelling for work, I’m gonna be staying for a while so I’ll be happy to know
Also how harsh is the police with weed there? And how hard can it be to get it? Expensive?
Also what are some other Czech places to visit while there?

I was there last year, but haven't smoked weed in years. I'm just going by old information here. Maybe someone can help adjust this if I am off.

I don't remember the cops really caring about weed. Unless ofcourse they just want to frick you. If you don't act like butthole, I don't think they will give a shit. But I can be wrong. Asian tourists tend to get fricked quite a lot by the czech police, and they enforce laws I never knew existed, like fining people for drinking in public.

Weed can be obtained throughout the city. Since you dont have a personal dealer you will probably have to go to a bar like Chapeou Rouge or Shotgun bar and see if you meet some dealer willing to sell. Africans tend to be the easiest to buy from. Don't buy anything from gypsies in the street. Chances are you will be scammed.

On places to go, i have no idea. I lived there for 5 years, and havent even set foot in the national museum. But the stromovka park is nice. I lived next to it, so I would often go there.

The Czech attitude towards pretty much anything is "I don't give a shit just don't bother me". That goes for weed, it's not technically legal there but there are tons of head shops and references to weed around Prague. I haven't tried getting any over there but I'm guessing you could ask in one of the head shops, or try your luck on a dating app. Otherwise bars like the ones already mentioned are a good bet. Whenever I've smoked weed in other European countries it's been from the Czech Republic and it was good stuff.

Brno is a cool city, not nearly as touristy as Prague. I stayed there for a few nights and went to Moravsky Krumlov to see Alfons Mucha's masterpiece on display in a 900 year old castle. Also the ossuaries are pretty wild.

Cesky Krumlov is beautiful, definitely recommend spending a couple nights there if you like old castles. Also Hluboka nad Vltavou is one of the most beautiful castles in the country and it's not far.

Pilsen is cool but definitely more of a "locals-only" vibe except in the touristy spots like the Pilsner Urquell brewery. The beer and food is pretty exceptional.

Thanks for this, also accommodation in those other cities and villages is expensive? How’s the price range in the country for average daily things?

        Anonymous

If you're used to USA or UK prices then the entirety of the Czech Republic will feel very affordable to you, unless you're trying to stay in high end AirBnbs/hotels and only eat at tourist trap restaurants. For $50 to $100 USD/night you should be able to find very comfortable places to stay in good locations, and I'm sure you can find cheaper stays than that if you really dig.

I think every single restaurant meal I ate in the Czech Republic was less than $15 USD, and that would probably get you an appetizer + entrée + at least one large beer. Otherwise, I would go to a grocery store in the morning and get some bread for like $1.50, some cheese for $2, some meat for $2 and some apples for $2 and be set for the day. Bus, train and tram tickets are extremely affordable, I don't think I've ever paid more than $10 and that was for a longer train ride.

In restaurants make sure you understand how tipping works - for example, after you ask to pay, the waiter will bring the card machine to your table, tell you that the price is 250 Kc, and then you have to say "please make it 300" or whatever you want. I think 10-15% is adequate for a tip there.

Are there any cities that are cheaper than brno or krumlov? A quick check for April prices shows over $50 for a mediocre hotel or pension

        Anonymous

Have you checked AirBnb? $50 USD is pretty cheap unless you want to be in someone's basement or a shitty part of town. You might be able to get a short-term deal on a furnished apartment from some landlord? Last time I checked it looked like ~$400/month was the lowest rate for a decent place in Brno, for example.

Český Krumlov is pretty, but full of Asian tourists
do not visit the Egon Schiele museum there, it is extremely disappointing bordering on tourist trap
imo it's worth it, but Třeboň is a similar experience with much less hassle, you can get amazing fresh fish from the fish farms, and still visit Krumlov for 1 day

you should definitely visit at least 1 castle and do a castle tour, I've been to 10+ and was never disappointed
some even have ren faire style larpers do shows in the castle grounds
people will recommend Karlštejn, the castle itself is nice but the town is a tourist trap, so visit literally any castle that isn't Karlštejn, Prague Castle or Krumlov
you should also go hiking, the ideal case is you make friends with colleagues and visit their "chalupa", or go kayaking/biking/camping in a tent if you're into that
in summer/autumn you can go mushroom picking and hopefully get invited by a colleague for ovocné knedlíčky (fruit dumplings) which is the best Czech food that you can't get in restaurants
you can also try going to the opera at National Theater or Estates Theater in Prague, tickets are very cheap compared to elsewhere, shows almost every night, and the opera houses themselves are really beautiful
even if you don't listen to classical music it might still be fun to mingle with a classy crowd
Black Light Theater is fun too

Straling thread since I will also be there, where are the best place to eat?
Also, best clubs? I like standard commercial music

for Czech food, I like Na Rozhraní right next to Hradčanská metro and Rodr at Kobylisy metro
Potrefená husa is a decent franchise
the Italian place on náměstí Republiky is pretty good too
for desserts and coffee I like Černá madona (expensive but very pretty place) and Ovocný světozor
obligatory reminder that trdelník is not Czech and never will be

My number 1 choice besides Prague would be Kutna Hora, if you're into architecture.

good choice, very quiet with few tourists, and the mine tour is cool
      Písek has a similar vibe

He can still go to Karlštejn and not buy anything there if you don't like touristy places. He does't have to eat there either as Karlštejn is close to Praha. But f.e. Restaurace Pod Dračí skálou in Karlštejn is pretty cheap. Not a peak of gastronomy, but definitely not a tourist trap. Svíčková for around 130 Czk. The Karlštejn village is so small, he can just ignore it, walk through in 5 minutes and visit Karlštejn...
The rest I agree with. Good tips

What's wrong with trdelník? My Czech friend even said I should try it

          Anonymous

It's not that there's anything inherently wrong with the food item itself, it's just that you shouldn't listen to the marketing. It's a roll of bread cooked on a spit, which is an interesting novelty, but don't mistake it for something uniquely Czech.

Though if you were to ask me what's ACTUALLY wrong with it, it's overpriced, and may even be unappetizing. I've been to Prague twice, and I've seen a lot of discarded trdelniks in the trash & even littering the streets. If normie tourists don't like it, I don't have much faith in how it tastes, not that I would know, because the price tag deterred me first.

Nothing. Some Czechs are just way too patriotic about things, because it's everywhere and the shop owners make it look "Traditional" and it's really not, but who cares. It's not that bad. I had it a few times and never really thought weird of it. I'd still rather get McDonalds though.

it originates in Transylvania, and not a single Czech had heard of it even 10 years ago
it tastes good if it's hot and freshly made, I don't hate it but often you end up paying almost the price of a full meal for a small, dry and lukewarm pastry
now lázeňské oplatky, those are good and cost next to nothing

It’s not Czech, it’s Slovak/Romanian, but it got turned into shitty tourist meal (particularly those filled with ice cream).
It can be pretty good if baked well, but there’s a chance you’ll get an overpriced over-baked roll because frick you, you tourist.

Czechanon here, dont stay in Prauge for too long there are other great places and cities to visit. If you are into nature and culture, go visit Plzeňský region, national park Šumava is epic. You can also take a direct train from Prauge to Cheb which takes you to very epic places like Mariánské Lázně.

If you want weed go to the place where the famous clock at the town hall is. There you talk to some tourist guides those dudes that hand out flyers. Have a little chat with them and just casually say you would like to smoke some weed. 15min later someone will turn up you follow him into a smaller street you give the money he gives you the weed. It is that easy.

Prague is a huge tourist trap. Unless you care about seeing architecture and stuff, I would advise you to stay away from there. The same goes for Karlovy Vary, but they are the better option. Mariánské Lázně are like the lighter version of Karlovy Vary so they might be worth the attention.
Brno is kind of alright, but I would recommend Mikulov which is like the czech version Provence.
Pilsen is pretty nice, especially in terms of beer.

Countryside is also great, regions like České Švýcarsko especially.

For real just use google maps and filter all the restaurants under 4.5 stars. Then pick any restaurant according to the type of food you want to eat at that moment.
Just don't go to the restaurants near the city squares and main tourist routes

Avoid Duplex and Karlovy lázně, the rest of the music clubs are pretty good.
Meetfactory and Cross Club are probably a must see, though. You can buy drugs at Cross Club by the way.

          Well me personally:
Big Smokers - usa style smoked meat

Bab Rýže - traditional Korean cuisine, some of the food tastes better than what I had in seoul (especially hot pot bulgogi)

Lokál is a franchise of few restaurants with great, fresh Pilsner and good traditional food

Výčep for a bit pricier take on traditional food

          Pragueanon here
Agreed with the post above, we often go to Lokál with friends
It is like czech mcdonalds. No soul but the beer is always fresh and served just like czech pils should be, the same applies to food. Not niche choice but a solid one.
My favourite beer & food place is Vinohradský pivovar.

Kek all the butthurt non-praguers here

Don't listen to them OP, Prague is big. You can easily spend so much time here and find something new every day.
Except for Brno, all the smaller cities have content for a few hours.
That being said, for sure do some roadtrip weekend

It isn't illegal to carry a few grams of weed, just don't smoke it next to a cop and you will be fine

Thank you all for the responses, as for clubs and ambient in the city or places near it how is it like? Here in Spain there’s clubs of mainly all kinds of music (broadly speaking) and organised raves in public places and shit, there’s plenty of places to go legal or illegally. Is it the same? More chill and not so many public stuff? Apreciate all responses

      Anonymous

We have laws that after 10pm it must be quiet, so alternative public raves are a no no unless it is indoors or in a wasteland.

That being said, the scene is pretty big and you can find all kinds of stuff, try searching online. For some parties you do need to know the right people because they aren't public at all. Usually heavy psychedelic drugs use.

I don't personally do this kind of stuff but my friends are out every week on some weird ass rave.

You can try Bike Jesus on Štvanice island. It's kinda alternative and a good place to start when exploring the non-commercial scene.
There also used to be raves held inside a rusty old cargo ship on the river, but it might be closed during the winter.

In my experience, the trains and buses in the Czech Republic are great, but that's comparing it to the complete failure of public transportation in the US. I use the app Muj Vlak for trains when I'm there, I'm not sure of the best app for buses. I've usually just looked up a bus route using Google Maps and then paid for the ticket at the bus stop/station.

Ignore the people telling you to avoid Prague. It's fricking amazing. It's better with all the expats and foreigners. It's much easier to make friends. Everyone is excited to be there. It's crazy cheap. $1.50 beers, 500/month apartments, gorgeous architecture, cheap food, great public transport, low crime. What's not to like?

I really like Czesky Krumlov too. We spent 3 days there and I made friends on the first night with a bunch of locals at a bar. The food was really good and there were a couple great bars in town. We rafted the river and stopped at breweries along the way. This little food joint in town called Krčma Šatlava served the best meal Ive ever eaten in Europe. It was a giant meat plate cooked over a wood fire with like 6 different BBQ meats. We ate there twice.
