no way man, I've never stayed in a hostel and never will. I like a clean, private space to sleep whenever I want and bang my gf or take a long time pooping. who knows what I will run into in a hostel. I'm actually appalled just reading about them. but I've never traveled for like 2 months at a time, so I can see the appeal. just not for me though. id rather travel for like 2 weeks at a time in a hotel I looked up online

Same. Hostels may be nice if you're a 18yr old with no money to your name and with a desire to get traveler's diarrhea, but if you want to get a good night's sleep, a good shit and a well rested body for walking and visiting your desired location, a solo room is a must.

That's why you pay for a private room at a hostel, to get the benefits of a hostel combined with the benefits of a hotel.

I find private rooms in hostels actually kind of a bad mix. When you’re in a room with other people, you wake up early and get into the showers etc because you want to get the frick out of the shared room. But when you have your own room there’s much less motivation to go into the disgusting hostel bathrooms to get up and out. Just sit in your nice room for another hour or two

One day i’m going to try though. It hurts less to pay $10 instead of $40

This. If I wanted to sleep in a room with a bunch of strangers and share a bathroom with 30 other motherfrickers I could go to jail for free.

I’ve never liked hostels. I’ve used them exclusively when traveling places where hotels are an especial ripoff (most recently NYC and Moscow, both years ago now; I hear rumors that Moscow accommodations aren’t as inflated as they were when I was last there, and perhaps things have changed still further since February), or a handful of times when I was young and broke and traveling with friends. In all cases I used private rooms or my friends and I filled a smaller multi-bed room. Among other things, I don’t like sharing bathrooms. The social aspect of hostels can be cool if you’re looking for that, but I am not typically looking for that, and I’ve found I can get the same experience out of bars or restaurants in hostel neighborhoods/backpacker ghettos if I am.

In most of Southeast Asia, where I’ve traveled most extensively, you can get perfectly nice guesthouse or small hotel rooms for dirt cheap—you can spend $20 or so in a lot of places and get 3-star-equivalent comfort or better. Shell out $100 and you’ll get something that would cost five times as much or more in New York or London.

Nowadays I mostly travel with my family, so we mostly rent apartments, because we get value out of multiple bedrooms/bathrooms and a kitchen. But if we’re not in an apartment we are probably in a hotel suite. Sacrificing a kitchen for breakfast service is no great loss.

Hostels are only for the poor and pretentious. If you can pay a hotel like a functioning adult you're doing everything right

On my last vacation, I enjoyed the nightlife a lot. So much so, that my gf and I started drinking before dinner (@6PM), through the completion of our dinner (@10PM) and then we walked to the nightlife areas and drank until about 2am, got a burger, and went back to the hotel room for sex. Didn't end up actually falling asleep until 4am. Of course I'm going to sleep until 11 or noon the next day in that situation. How the frick would I be able to do any of that in a hostel? I remember in undergrad sharing a dorm with some kid for a semester. It was the gayest thing ever when he would come back to the room and I would have a girl naked under the covers. Hell, I would be really hesitant to even share a room with my best friend even if we have twin beds. I really like to sleep late, go to bed late, and take as much time to loaf in my bed or on the toilet as I need. Privacy > all

I was finding really good hotels in Portugal for $115 a night so I don't think they cost too much. And clean bathrooms are absolutely a must, I couldn't sleep if there is crap all over the bathrooms

Depends. Most times a hostel is fine (the private room that is) but sometimes a hotel is necessary. With that said I find that those ridiculous 5 star places are a waste of money. 4 star is fine.

Tricky bit about hostels is about being able to sleep. And also not being a fussy homosexual.

I've found that having earbuds and noise heavy music or brown nose, like some sort of shoegaze (I have a specific thing I blast), will drown out pretty much all the noises, snoring included. I can't snorers especially.

The shittiest part is if some moron turns on the light, but there's a high chance they will be told to frick off with it, and you can wear a face mask.

Once I am asleep it is hard to wake me up unless someone is fricking with my shit or very near me.

As for valuables, I keep my passport, laptop and phone with me all the time. If it's a short trip I won't take my laptop. There's usually lockers in hostel dorms, at least big enough for a laptop + some other bits and pieces. I wouldn't travel with super expensive filming or photography gear and stay in hostels, if you can afford that shit you better have more means. In fact I wouldn't stay in a cheap hotel as some 3rd world housekeeper is more liable to steal your shit than some random Brit drunk out of his mind on his vacation. I've worked for hostels myself and in two years of working I've only seen theft twice, and one of those cases it wasn't a guest but a friend of the owner of the hostel who got caught immediately and nearly got his head trashed in. Other time some dude had his head phones stolen.

And yes, if hotels were cheaper, I'd stay at them instead. I don't socialize much at hostels if I am travelling either way. There's better places to pick up girls for fricking too. Whenever I travelled with my gf, I never stayed in hostels as the cheapest room for two is still individually cheaper than the cheapest bunk bed, except I can frick, etc. Most hostels blow when it comes to atmosphere, although I've met some cool guys. What I hate the most are the cringe Instagram themed hostels appealing to millennial boomers with moronic hashtags and stupid phrases, like LIVE LOVE LAUGH unironically. Grittier places can either have a load of Polish construction workers or surprisingly interesting people.

99% of the time, I prefer hotels.

The only time I would ever consider a hostel:
    >real hotels are fully booked or ludicrously expensive
    >there is a fun gimmick

An example of the latter being capsule beds that are commonly found in Asia, or that German hostel located inside of a Burger King that's memed here.
