Am I weird for not liking tropical islands? Just doesn't appeal to me.

I spent 6 months for work in the Bahamas and everyone says how lucky I am but I honestly didn't enjoy it past the first few days.

I’ve stayed in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic a few times on holiday days when I was a kid.
The appeal is staying in a resort with modern conviniéndose surrounded by lush palm trees, coconuts, gorgeous crystal clear beaches and hot women who dress skimpy.
My dream is to retire early buy up some beachside property and relax but unfortunately I’m a Zoomer barely out of college and I’ll never be able to accumulate enough wealth to do that because of israelites and Boomers.

      this,
I spent two years in South Africa in a coastal town, it was nice at first but at some point I even started hating it.

Hey man, you don’t have to be wealthy to live like that. Remote job in the US or Europe + cheap country in Latin/ South America and you’re all set.

I like them if they are not tourist traps but it seems like all of them are.

Did you go there for an internship? Nassau or another island?

Did my internship on exuma and kinda hated it too. At least working there.

The week before actually starting and ending the internship was kinda cool though. The experience of working on a tropical island vs vacation are miles apart. Also being on an island and enjoying your time really depends on the people...and tbh Bahamians are not really my fave.

I was a US goverment contractor on Andros Island. All there was to do was get drunk and fish. The beaches were nice and all but hanging out at them got old after a day.

      >Bahamians not really my fave

This is prolly me doin' a racism but all the women we're egregiously obese and smelled very bad. And I actually like thick black women normally.

White people aren't made for places without seasonal variation. It starts having negative mental effects on them.

as long as its within an oceanic or Mediterranean climate because north american seasons weren't made for whites as well, allergies in spring/summer and SAD in autumn/winter.

I feel like these places workout if there's a sizeable population and you have family or really close friends to get by the days. you can be in places with only one season like barbados or greenland, but if you have a close knit, it makes the endless weather tolerable.

    ausgay here
i dont get it either, really confuses me why people fly to 3rd world shitholes when there are nicer beaches at home

nonausgay here. how often do you get parasites/jellyfish/other nasty wildlife fricking you up while you swim

        Anonymous

The majority of the nasties are in the northern tropical parts where people don’t really swim in the ocean generally (crocodiles, stonefish, deadly jellyfish etc). In the southern/temperate parts of the country where most people live really the worst that you will get are small jellyfish that have a painful sting but aren’t really harmful. There is sharks like anywhere else but really most people know the chances of that are extremely low and it doesn’t stop them. Not aware of any parasites in the ocean either.

    Beach resorts are a meme.
Oh wow you are going to sit in a lounge chair and relax with a drink? How long before that doesn’t get boring? An hour? Two hours? But you booked a week stay here.
It’s such a forced image from travel magazines,

    Nah you're right.
They look amazing esp. when you're stuck in a cold place but in reality being on a paradise beach/island like this means always being sweaty and sticky and having sand, salt and sand flea bites everywhere all the time.

Plus if you're white you can stay in the sun for like an hour a day with SPF50 before melanoma risk becomes a thing so I dunno what you'll do for the rest of the day, nevermind weeks or months.

I used to feel the same but now I'm getting older sometimes I just want to go somewhere relaxing, preferably away from people and with nice weather.
No point if its a touristy, busy shit hole though.

Go snorkelling/scuba diving. I don't care for beaches either but tropical marine life is crazy. Like a whole other planet.

I’m not much of a beach person, so tropical islands are mostly lost on me as well. The problem is that they are almost without exception essentially a tiny collection of villages in the middle of an ocean, sometimes with added large hotel complexes. I mostly find tropical islands inherently boring apart from the natural setting, which, as I mentioned not being a beach enthusiast, has limited appeal for me. I travel mostly for cultural and historical interest, and those sorts of things are mostly in short supply on islands. Plus apart from fresh fish and cuisines you find on a few Asian islands, I rarely like island food.

I have made exceptions—my parents retired to a tiny-ass island in the Caribbean, not at all glitzy, indeed, rather scruffy, and I enjoy visiting them in the winter specifically to do basically nothing. Go to a beach in the morning, sit around the pool in the afternoon, mostly cook and eat at home. A little fishing with my elderly dad and my kids. But I wouldn’t enjoy more than about two weeks of it.
