Anybody ever move to Thailand for a year to train Muay Thai? How much should one save if they were to pursue this?

Anybody ever move to Thailand for a year to train Muay Thai? How much should one save if they were to pursue this? Also, I heard some gyms offer education visas but not sure about this. Looking at Bangkok or Chiang Mai. Would it make sense for me to find a job and work while there or just purely train? I'm a SWE btw but I don't think I could keep my current job with the timezone difference.

You could. I work US SWE from SEA

It's sort of nice to wake up after noon and skip the hottest time of day.

The prices vary a lot. You can do it in Chiang Mai for 4000 baht a month. This is training up to twice a day, 6 days a week (2 hour sessions).

Suggest getting your own wraps and gloves. They're the only up front costs.

You can get an education visa for muay thai, but if you have a strong passport you can easily get 60 days (pre-apply for tourist visa) then extend for another 30 days. Try it for a few months first, then if you really love it, go for a long term visa.

It's hard. I went twice a day for the first week and burned out. Ended up trying to go as much as I could, but probably averaged out to around 5 times a week. It's awesome though.

btw gyms in Bangkok + Phuket often charge 10,000 baht or more. i found chiang mai was the best value. also less people = more one on one time with instructors.

It's certainly an interesting thing seeing people flood to only specific parts of countries. Like Venice, Rome, or Barcelona, Madrid etc.

I’m thinking of making the leap. You don’t have to fight and could just train and live for a year. Get in shape. But I would like to have one fight before I die.

My company has a fund where they save money for me (and avoid taxes). I can take money out but just scared to go.

Try it first. If you like it then go in. Sometimes you don't get along well with people in certain gym, or you just don't like the town. Phuket for example is an unapologetic tourist trap. Fun for a week, novel for 2, then it starts to get old. Especially seeing all the farang homosexuals around.

It's not the farang, it's the Saudis and Indians. Give me farang boomers or hippies, or even Israeli backpackers and Russian line-butters. Any demographic is better than Arab/South Asian.

I lived there for 9 months but didn't do muay thai.
I spent around 3000€ in rent for the whole time and maybe slightly more than that for everything else so maybe 7000€.
Then add whatever the muay thai lessons cost to that.
This was in Phuket and I went on a bunch of little trips and bought a lot of alcohol so it can be done cheaper.

I had a friend who did this exact thing. He moved to Thailand for 6 months when he was 30 and trained like a maniac for one fight. He ended up winning his fight too. When he got back, he had medical problems caused by the over training. He had an enlarged heart. His sex drive decreased really bad. His wife ended up leaving him. He lost his house and his business in the divorce. But at least he has a shitty cellphone video of him winning a fight in Thailand against a impoverished thai dude who looks like he's about 50.

lol yeah it was the "over-training" that did this and not the copious amounts of anabolic steroids he was doing like every other anglo moron in thailand.

over training is a legit thing that can cause heart problems which MIGHT cause more problems (one is reduced sex drive)
it happened to me, trained like crazy since I was 15, martial arts/endurance training, 2-3 times a week, at least 2 hours every session, literally was obsessed with it, then when I was around 24-25 I started having problems with erection, after numerous medical visits the only thing doc found was enlarged heart, doc said basically it could be age related but likely due to too much exercise, it wasn't conslusive, but since then I cut back on training and the erection problems almost went away. In my life I have not taken any roids of any kind.

Heart problems come from endurance training while carrying an infection which you should never do. You can train with a runny nose but never with a sore throat or a fever.
What you described isn't close to the schedules of most teen/amateur athletes. Try minimum 5 times a week for the sport complemented with runs and strength sessions for a total of 8-12 sessions per week

I doubt they do intense endurance training for 2 hours straight and then an extra hour of semi/full contact sparring, three times a week for 10 years.
anyway that was enough for me to get the condition

Because you can become a gigachad in 1 year compared to how the gays at SighSee tell you.

First off you get way more healthy food than that of the goyslop here in america that you can barely afford making you lose weight instanty
Secondly it's a long known fighting style that even seals use (watch IP man) and can deck anyone you oculd join a fight club the next year and get b***hes fast
lastly it's fricking cool as shit have you ever seen these people fight on youtube? they are giga chads, 1 year spending 15 of my 180k crypto worth it to get some fricking hot babes
Really my only concern is the heat and humidity, I hear it's like florida and that's a bit of shit. It' bad enough when it rains here in SD, but I hear the dollar goes far there so most gyms should be A/C

It's not the same, you can't get the real deal or for the price. Besides being in Thailand gives you stories to tell back home when you talk about your huge muscles and badass fighting. I just graduated from HS last June (over 18) and got a bunch in crypto, now that the israelite flu is done It's perfect to get a good deal without homosexuals

A year isn't long enough commitment to train in any top tier muay thai gyms. You'll be in a second rate gym with a bunch of other foreigners who all think they're getting The Real Authentic Muay Thai™ experience. Then you'll have a pro fight against some cab driver to make you feel like you're the shit.

              It's partially true.
But also you need a reality check. It's high temperature, high humidity, and your body will get hammered just trying to train in that. Assume 3 sessions a week while your body adjusts.

So even if it was a top tier gym, for the average joe, you wouldn't be able for it unless you have a few years of muay thai practice behind you,

Also as a warm up, every morning they run 5k (while it's still relatively cool). If you can't do the warm up, you'll take a few extra months to get your body in order

TLDR; this is not a 40 hour a week intense training, if you're a newbie.

So a 2nd tier gym is perfectly fine for a year, you'll be far far better than you are today after a year

                Anonymous

I'm conditioned enough to run a 5k every morning at over 6k ft. The humidity with the potential cramps is what concerns me. I'm planning on training MT 2-3x a week for a year before moving to Thailand. Shitty thing is it's a 1 hr drive so it will be an opportunity to see if I'm really committed to this journey. I probably will continue barbell training 2x a week along with running/rucking.

                >The humidity with the potential cramps is what concerns me.
Cramps can be due to you sweating out the salt in your body or lack of magnesium so take a magnesium supplement and eat way more salt. Or maybe its something about humidity that is cramp inducing.

Lmao. You know nothing about fighting. You'll spend a stupid amount of money and do a year in a tourist gym where the coaches give you frick all one on one, come home and get heemed by anyone who has actually trained properly with good coaches in a western gym. Or just grapplefricked by anyone who can shoot a double. Do you want to know why genuine Thai fighters are so elite? Because you they come from nothing, train with killers in rundown gyms since they are children and fight to eat, you will not learn that in a year in some tourist camp. You are a mark to them, not a student.

Thais like masks for privacy. They don't need to do their makeup and are basically anonymous when masked. Working girls especially like masks since they feel less shame sneaking into a hotel to catch foreign sperm for a living.

The thing I don't get is the couples masking to go on dates or shopping with each other. It's incredibly cringe and frankly disgusting.

I refrained from doing this as I avoid all interactions with the Thai authorities wherever possible, and I assumed it was a lover's quarrel gone wrong.

This is an actual true story l, but take it as a larp if you want.

I did it for 6 months. I recommend you do it. I recommend everyone reading this do it.

I went to a tourist gym in Phuket and I don't care. I just wanted to get in shape and escape the western rat maze. I was happier, training every day, reading books. Lost 20kg.

I recommend Phuket, but it's up to you, you can go be an authentic Real Muaythaier living in some village on 6000 baht a month where no one speaks english like the rest of this thread wants you to.

    Appeal of Phuket:
    1. Great weather
    2. Great beaches
    3. Mostly tourists so you'll make some friends over time
    4. Great nightlife in Bangla Road (don't overdo it)
    5. Not as developed as Bangkok, meaning less traffic and more nature

I was in Chai yai gym in Chiang Mai many years ago.
My experience was that the training was far more engaged than what I had gotten at home.
6 days a week: 5k every morning then 2hrs training in the morning and 2hrs in the afternoon. And yeah it was a farang class ofc. But all pad work was with a trainer - literally never held up a pad when I was there. At that time you could pay by week or by month but if you fought for the club you'd train for free and could live in the gym if you wanted. You'd have to be deemed ready first though. It's great, Chiang Mai is a great city and not as hot as the south. I think that gym has moved back to pai by now but you can train there too or there's bound to be other gyms.
