Anyone here ever cycled around Taiwan?

Anyone here ever cycled around Taiwan? I want to do a loop of the whole island and sleep at campsites whenever possible, during January and//or February.

I know cycling around Japan is the trendy thing in this region but I like to vacation during Europe's winter and Japan is too cold then so Taiwan will have to do.

Try not to get killed by a scooter.
Taiwan is not Japan, also the part near Taroko looks like a highway.

Op's pic is a bicycle only trail spanning the entire island. There probably isn't a more bicycle friendly country in the entire world.

*Disregarding the Netherlands, Japan, western Europe as a whole.

Tell me you haven't been to Europe without mentioning you haven't been to Europe.
You should switch up your youtubers a bit, more travel and less polit agitprop.

I'm French, have been to the Netherlands regularly (half of my family lives there), and I've been to Japan several times when I lived in Taiwan. Please stop talking out of your ass.

Don't worry, all the experiencecs I've read so far seem to paint Taiwan similar to how

mentions. Scooters do sometimes ride in the cycle lanes but, fortunately, according to all accounts I've read, they don't seem to ride like the morons in Thailand or Vietnam. It doesn't appear to be an issue, haven't seen one complaint about it so far.

I only did the strip between Taitung and Hualien.
There's a massive steep mountain that you have to go up at one point. I walked up half of it. On the way down though, I was going like 80km/hr on a road bike.

Yeah the south-east does look pretty tough, might buy an ebike, will have to see how in-shape I am.

Seems like a pretty cool idea OP, what sort of distance are you planning to ride per day and what would it be in total? Are you planning to stay in hotels/hostels along the way? It would be a good way to work off all the heavy rice and noodle carbs you eat along the way.

Should be around 1000 km. Was thinkn ing of just doing 4 or 5 hours of riding 5 days a week. I'll only stay in hotels if I absolutely have to, I never use hostels - would rather sleep on the street.

Of course this would mean staying in hotels is more likely, if campsites don't have electricity outlets.

Yeah I cycled from hualien to taitung, only my ass was absolutely blasted by the saddle and I gave up at Yuli, stayed at a kino Japanese era hostel with cute girls that flirted with me and even saw me off to the train station, where I would take a train and dump that shitty bicycle at Taitung.

Didn't see a single other laowai, that was in 2016 though.

Sounds great, anon. I think I would definitely invest in one of those add-on seat cushions if cycling every day. Generally I can't do more than 4 hours without sore arse happening; how the frick these pros ride for 8 hours or more I've no idea.

I have a friend in Taoyuan who works for Giant Bicycles and they regularly have people that do circumnavigations of the island by bike. It takes a little over two weeks or so going at a reasonable pace (sightseeing VS racing). If I ever went back I'd love just to ride up to Keelung and Jiufen. That entire area was kino.
