It just doesn't seem to be worth the risk. I suppose the bigger and taller you are, the fewer sickos you'll potentially attract but that also goes the other way. Sometimes the hitchhiker is the psycho and no little church lady wants to pick up a 6'2 220lbs potential psycho.

Over the past 12 years I’ve hitchhiked over 20K km across 28 countries in five continents. I don’t know how many lifts I’ve gotten but I’d guess over 500 individual car rides. The worst thing that ever happened to me was getting dropped off in a shitty location and having to walk or take a bus to get somewhere better. I’ve got a million great stories but honestly my favorite was being driven by an old man around the streets of a medieval Italian city while blasting Lady Gaga and spitting cherry pits out of the car window.

I’m sorry you inhabit a horror fantasy.

I'm curious about doing it in US. Has always been my dream, to do a road trip across the US like Kerouac did.

I have. I went from Krakow, Poland, to Rodez, France, going throuhg Slovakia, Hungary, Slovenia and Italy. The best trip of my life. I went up with my girlfriend at the time, so I think it made it easier.

France and Poland were the easiest.

Slovakia and Slovenia were very easy too, especially Slovenia. Hungary was fairly good too, but I travelled at a bad time as it was Easter at the time and there was hardly anyone on the road, even the main highway going towards Slovenia.

Italy was the worst as Italians are very, very unlikely to pick up hitchhikers. I sometimes waited for hours to get a ride. I only had an easy time in Dolomites. IIRC it took me three or four days to go from Friuli to Genova. There I gave it up and took a train to Nice.

I recommend using signs, like a cardboard sheet, with your destination written on it. Hitchhike where it is safe for cars to stop and they have the time to see you as the driver has maybe a couple of seconds to decide if they will pick you up. Always carry some extra water. Having a tent or some sort of a sleeping system is useful. It's better to hitchhike AFTER a town than BEFORE as most people will be locals going home.

If you don't like a ride, turn it down, the worst that can happen is some guy will think you're a gay and you will never see them again in your life.

Europe is probably the best place to do it. I don't know if I would do it again, I did it when I was 21, now I am 25, but it feels like that after COVID and what has been happening in the world it would be harder. It was very fun also because I had a nice gf to give me blowjobs in the tent after a hard day, so it helped that it felt like an adventure.

Your biggest risk is not getting picked up and being stranded for hours in some shitty backwater industrial area on the outskirts of some town.
The risk is different for women, but this is a mostly male website so it is safe to assume you are a guy.

I know a guy who does it all the time - he refuses to use any other kind of transport if at all possible. He meets lots of cool people and gets unique experiences from it. He probably has some system in place to tell if people are crazy or something?

Hitchhiked in Canada. Be clean and dress nice and people will pick you up. I've had people pick me up within 5 minutes or 3 hours. It's a waiting game. Finding a good spot is important too. Most of the people who picked me up we're Europeans. People who talk about serial killers wat h too many movies. Obviously always be alert and careful but 99% of people in the world are chill and nice as frick.

Is this where all the native girls get killed? I guess I should state that I am a man. As a woman I wouldn't do this unless you are with a friend (preferably another male). Also always take pictures of the licence plate and send it to your parents. I also tell the driver that I texted the number out and hitch hiking does have a bad stigma to it. Everyone understands it.

    I've hitchhiked:
    >across Southeast Turkey (2013)
    >around the Ring Road in Iceland (2014)
    >from London to Istanbul (2014)
    >in the mountains in Colombia (2019)

I always had lots of fun. Personally, it's not something I'd want to do anymore now that I'm almost 30, but I have no regrets.

So far good, altough I got fricking scared in thailand when during the ride he manually locked the doors from the front seat (I was at the back seat cause he was travelling with an another guy) and they started to smile at me saying "there is no need to worry"

Would you pick up someone trying to hitchhike? Hopefully the answer is no. Now think about the people who would respond with "Yes". Are those the people you want to be trapped in a car for hours with?

Yeah I would, plenty of nice people pick up hitchhiker's and they tend to either be genuinely kind people or more adventurous types with good conversation
Just cause you're scared of your own shadow doesn't mean everyone is

        >not wanting to pick up some random stranger who may or may not be stable and may or may not even be a sparkling conversationalist is on par with being afraid of your own shadow

It's just not worth it even if he turns out to be stable. If you don't have chemistry then the ride suddenly becomes way longer.

Yes, I have before and will again. I keep a handgun in my driver's side door so they can't reach it, and make sure to move my wallet there too. I've gotten free drugs, cool stories and even a bj, good times all around.

I've had to hitchhike for nearly two years when I was in school. It was not good when you have to do it. Majority of time it sucked because people here tend to give you a finger instead, so I had to walk a lot.
But I do have one great experience with a chubby milf that took me once and we ended up fricking in her place. That was great and it is one of my fondest memories from that otherwise shitty period of life.

How do you manage to go from "can you take me to/from school" to "lets frick at your house"?

I didn't do much to be honest. She was listening to Prodigy when she took me, we started talking about the band, I told her a story how I went to their gig and it kinda just clicked from that point. Then we talked about life in general, I told her my then sob story, she took interest for some reason and then invited me in.

How the frick being killed when hitchhiking is more likely than on the streets of any big city after midnight?

I really like the idea and would love to try it but I'm so awkward talking to strangers I would probably give up after the first 5 rejections.

That's my biggest fear. I'm terrible at conversation so I'm worried that someone will pick me up to chat and I'll just be awkward and we'll be sitting in silence for most of it

Just make up stuff, chances are minimal that you'll ever see these people again.
If you don't have many material just retell SFW some greentext stories.

I genuinely think I am a decent conversationalist but I need a closed environment. Like my colleagues think I'm pretty social and always laugh when I tell them I have no friends. Starting a conversation with a completely random person, especially when you need something from them, sounds nightmarish to me.

When I was 18...pretty sure I nearly ended up raped and murdered by some Denis Rader looking homosexual dude who was nearly salivating over me. Luckily I was far older and more clued up than I looked so jumped out at some lights and went into nearest house but yeah...frick that.C

Picked a few up over the years with no issues.

Google Peter Tobin Dinah McNicole - I'd been to the same rave she was hitching home from when he picked her up...

Can't imagine how the landscape changes from country to country just by driving every other thousand kilometer.
North to south Taiwan takes 2-3 hours and it feels like I'm in the same city after getting off the train.
