Are cruise ships getting too big?

I love huge ships but did they really need to make anything bigger than a freedom class? it seems wasteful.

Anon, I hope you don't mind if I ask in your thread (because it seems silly to make a secondary thread on cruising), but how do you pick with cruise line is best for you? I enjoy traveling and I've been interested taking a cruise since pre-pandemic. I'm a burger in my 30's so I'm not sure which is the best for someone older like myself.

Carnival is fine. People give them shit but they're really not bad unless you do short/cheap cruises. Royal Caribbean would be right there with them, supposedly slightly nicer than Carnival. Those are the two main cruise lines, either would be a fine start, you can learn from that experience what you liked/didn't like and go from there. If you're more adventurous there are other lines like Celebrity, Virgin, MSC, and some others. Don't know much about them though.

Main thing is bring someone else with you because they'll charge you the double cabin rate anyway. Sorry incels!

Good to know. I have someone I would go with so traveling alone isn't an issue. I just don't want to go on one that's like a complete party ship targeted towards people in their early 20's. I'm just in the mood for a vacation where I can turn my brain off and drink.

That has more to do with when you cruise than what line you go on. Around spring break it's going to be more raucous than at other times of the year. When I was on Carnival I saw in September, it was a mix of families, young people, boomers and a few older people. Hardly a nonstop party aboard either.

Idk if its exactly the same for cruises in your neck of the woods, but here in aus, if you go on any of the RCI cruises you'll have a even mix of families/youngadults/middleaged/decrypit old c**ts.

The biggest advice I can give you if you want to go on a cruise is to not give a shit about social castes/age etc. Everyone is just looking to chill out and have a good time. Some of the funnest experiences I've had cruising have been with like 70+ year old couples.

Good advice. Had a similar experience with Carnival in the US. Heard about their "party atmosphere," maybe it was 25 years ago but it certainly has an even mix of ages now.

It depends on the style of your vacationing. If you want to party then Carnival is the best. R&R then therr are better options.

        >R&R then therr are better options.
That's what my goal would be. I was kind of thinking of maybe an Alaskan cruise or just doing one of the many Mexican cruises just to lay about and drink.

          >i want to spend my days lazing about and drinking
          >so I'm going on a cruise
Just go to a beach destination thats cheap and drink away. A week stay at a resort in Punta Cana will be about as expensive, with better R&R (higher quality hotel, better room, better service, better alcohol quality thanks to bottle choice, no sea sickness, less people in the pool/beach) overall while also having better nightlife and allowing a bigger alcohol budget. Cruises are a scam, the only one worth doing would be a Nile river cruise because you really don't tend to want to overstay in Egypt.

Split a proper hotel room with whoever you're going with and have fun nailing some DR bawds after a day of relaxation and boozing, you will not regret.

If you want a more traditional no frills cruise experience, closer to how it was in the good old days, then Princess is the way to go. They get dibs in Alaska since they were there first. There's very very few ammenities for families and kids, so no slides, and their private islands can be a little barebones. But if your desire is sitting on deck and reading while looking at the sea, and then with good food, Celebrity, Princess, and Holland America are the lines you need. Older crowds, richer clientele (but no so rich that they're basically a different class to you), and lots of port destinations.

I want bigger. Let’s take another one and strap them both together in massive cruise ship catamaran and also give it an airstrip on top.

You understand that cruiseships are a paid containment zone for uncultured swine who want to pretend that docking in a country for three hours is traveling, right?
    >inb4 purity spiral
Go tell someone you've been to XYZ country "as part of a cruise," you know it's not the same.

It's only huge by boat standards. Compared to a building (which is basically what it is, a floating hotel) it's not that big. It's 1000 feet long and 200 feet wide. Something like the Burj Dubai is way bigger.

They need to go even bigger. Ban anyone older than 40 and younger than 18. Provide free condoms and super cheap alcohol. Make sure there is a 1:1 ratio of men to women or so. Provide ample events on board. There I saved the cruise industry.

Way too fricking big. A ship the size of Princess' Royal class is already verging on too big, and usually it's only tolerable when you're running under 75% capacity.
