Australia

Ive never been here before. I got 2 weeks to kill, where should I spend it? I got an online friend in Sydney but that's about it. Im a young guy, looking to have fun and enjoy the sights. Are hostels a big thing in Aus?

If you want beaches, south East QLD. Stay on the southern end of the Gold Coast (ideally south of Burleigh Heads). You can cross the border into NSW which has some of the best rated beaches in the country at Cabarita and Pottsville.

If you want city vibes, go to Melbourne.

If you want a variety of landscapes, go to Tasmania. Most of our mainland has beautiful but samey landscapes for hours on end, whereas Tassy you can see a variety within a few hours drive.

Avoid Sydney. Maybe a day or two to see the famous Harbourside shit, but it is a soulless bugman city. The conservative state government has squeezed any life out of it over the years, there's frick all to do there now except gamble your pay away and buy overpriced shit. Everything Sydney can offer a tourist is done 4x better by the 3 places I've mentioned.

Personally if I had to spend 2 weeks here I'd spend 8 days touring Tasmania in a van and the rest chilling in Burleigh Heads or Coolangatta on the Gold Coast.

this is a useful post also cairns and great barrier reef if it's dry season (April to October).

Also to expand on beaches the Sunshine coast (north of brisbane is also amazing)

Sunshine coast is ok if you want something very chilled out. No real party season, more of a family destination.
I'd suggest avoiding the school holiday seasons, it gets stupidly busy.

In Sydney you can do half a day at Bondi, then half a day in the city.
And then on another day go up to the blue mountains via train do a bit of sightseeing there).

      Nice, that's a good suggestion.

What's the best month to go? Im from florida so some heat is okay...gold coast weather seems perfect and Im thinking september or so would be a decent time to go...

        Hostels are a thing, yes.
The big destinations are Sydney, Uluru and Cairns.
If you're really into beaches and degenerate partying, the Gold Coast is popular.
But there are heaps of options, so I'd suggest either picking something obvious or doing some research on travel websites, its a massive country with a shitload of beaches, national parks, and big cities if you're into that.

Gold Coast is nothing like Florida, in summer it's warm but if you're from Florida it won't bother you at all. Winter isn't bad either because its still a comfortable temperature.
Cairns on the other hand is much more tropical so you're probably better off going in winter. (To state the obvious, our seasons are inverted to yours, I'm talking in our seasons).

that's why im thinking late september/early october so it's mild all around. Beaches are cool, don't need to see a whole lot being that im from Florida though but I'll check it out. Definitely going to see the great barrier reef, spend a weekend in sydney. The blue mountains sound interesting enough to add to the itinerary. Il check out more things along the east coast... Shooting for half and half nature and urban exploration

Melbourne is probably the only place worth visiting for 'urban exploration'. Sydney is ok but its mostly just the beach and taking photos at the harbour with the Chinese tourists.

September is perfect. It's extremely hot and humid there in summer, so you kind of just want to avoid that, it's tropical enough the rest of the year already.

Everything south of where Brisbane is, including, is fine in summer.

You're just as likely to get it in Australia. In any case you don't have to go to Thailand as a sex tourist, there is plently of normal stuff to do there and it is easy to travel to other countries in SEA on the cheap. Way better value and bang for buck than Australia.

Seconded. Australia is not the place you come to for fun as a young dude. Its basically a retirement village.
The best part as a tourist is the natural sights, but they're all far and wide apart. You'll burn multiple days just traveling and not having fun.
Lastly its expensive. All the touristy shit involving staff is a rort. You can do some of it for free, but that again takes more time and effort.

        >Australia is not the place you come to for fun as a young dude.
100% There's some nice beaches and shit but it is just a mini-America and an overpriced and less exciting one at that.

        [...]
Is it really so bad that I should never visit? It's somewhere I wanted to go for a while now. What exactly is it that makes Thailand better? Are you just talking about sex? Fricking loads of prostitutes sounds fun but that's not the main purpose of this trip

        >Is it really so bad that I should never visit?
Wait until you're an old dude and come to Australia on one of those guided boomer trips and see the national parks and wildlife and crap. Otherwise it's mostly just a few overpriced, overcrowded touristy places that at the end of the day aren't all that exciting. Sure there are beautiful beaches here but you also have that in SEA. Plus in Asia you have a totally different culture, vibe, food, interesting and even confronting experiences and loads more fun. Also much better value for money overall.
        >What exactly is it that makes Thailand better?
Warm all year round, nice beaches, great food, loads of interesting and beautiful places to visit, close and easy to get to other Asian countries, like Cambodia (picrel), vastly different and interesting culture, place of contrasting cultures and attitudes, more dynamic and vibrant, cheaper alcohol, cheaper accomodation, transport etc.
        >Are you just talking about sex?
No.There is loads to do in Thailand and Asia apart from sex. You can easily spend a month there, have a lot of fun and not have sex.

Its not bad if you really wanna visit Australia, for the unique fauna or the multitude of clean empty beaches around the coast etc. Plus its one of the safest and civilized countries on Earth and the people are generally friendly so you wont face any hassle exploring the place.

But its generally boring otherwise. The night life is pathetic. Sydney and Melbourne is full of immigrants so if you're going to hang out with white people in the city, you'll be disappointed. The food isnt bad with lots of quality asian restaurants, but not world famous either.
Theme parks are shit. Shopping is shit. Very few historical monuments or good museums because the country is young. Comedy scene is shit. Events are few and far between. Sports are shit. Prostitution is legal, but its not prevalent and the affordable prostitutes are asian girls anyway. Maybe if you wanna get drunk its ok but not in Sydney cause everything closes early.
Question is what are you really looking for in a holiday?

            >Question is what are you really looking for in a holiday?
I'd like to see nature, meet some locals, get drunk at the bar, and meet up with my local friend that I've not met irl before. I'm fine if I spend more than a few days in nature. Australia in particular is somewhere I've wanted to see for myself so I figure this is a good time to do it.

A preliminary plan I've made is this: I can spend the first few days around gold coast hitting beaches and driving along the coast, spend a weekend in sydney, then I could see some nature in NSW and Victoria for the following week, and then I could end my trip with a weekend in melbourne. I figure that's plenty of time to meander around without overextending myself. I'm thinking of staying at a hostel when I'm in the cities but I do have to carry 2 weeks worth of luggage with me so maybe not.

            >The night life is pathetic. Sydney and Melbourne is full of immigrants so if you're going to hang out with white people in the city, you'll be disappointed

That sucks for sure... any way around that? I was going to get drunk with my friend for at least 1 weekend.

I've been travelling round aus for 2 months now. Keep in mind this country is straight up fricking huge. Like the size of the USA or China. Bit like hardly any people. Just "seeing the sights" as has been said before is like multiple day bus rides or planes etc.

And to be honest the cities in terms of being a tourist probably won't have much for you (don't get me wrong it's pretty cool walking round melbkurne or taking the ferry in sydney), but in terms of actually living here, like immigrating I've never been to a country more civilized or 1st world ever. I'm literally going to move here, probably melbkurne or sydney haven't decided. These big cities here are like modern, safe, good public transport, everything works on time, it's great and so easy. Even melblurne has like this network of trams all round the city, and it's totally free.

But I'll give you some advice - the northern territory is a fricking abo infested shithole and should be avoided at all costs. Basically anything north of brisbane is shit. Hell even brisbane is kinda gay. Townsville is some cracked out Bogan shithole. Cairns is just full of British homosexuals trying to sell you "tours".

Honestly if you came here and just went melbourne, sydney, and left you wouldn't really have missed much. Keep in mind these "sights" are like in the fricking hellscape of the desert or the fricking rainforest it's like 38 degrees swarming with bugs and humidity. It's hell. Like who actually fricking cares about going somewhere, "ticking something off" if you're just miserable as frick? The fricking flies in the desert are unreal, they literally fly UP your nose.

If you had kids I don't think you could raise them in a more civilized 1st world city than adelaide.

So do you think I should stay in South eastern Australia? Some youtubers said Western Australia is underrated, but it seems very empty and far away from the bulk of the experience.

            >adelaide
            Would you recommend visiting Adelaide?

Go to Darwin. It's small, friendly, good drinking culture, go see Litchfield, go to a hot spring, see a crocodile, do whatever degenerate backpacker stuff.

Then drive to Adelaide. You'll get the mindless expanse of driving for days and seeing nothing, this is litterally the most unique thing about Australia and so many city gays miss it by just going Sydney to Cairns, eat bad food at the service stations, be excited to roll into some shithole town and even more excited when you leave 20min later, see the big rock, sleep under the stars, see the abos brawl in the street YOU DAAAAAWWGG CUUUUNT.

Then spend some time in Adelaide. You'll get the generic Australian city experience, they really are all the same, eat some Asian food, Adelaide beaches are better than anywhere except WA.

You could also drive Darwin to Brisbane and get much the same experience. Go to Mt Isa for the abo street brawls and the tourist mine, Longreach for the Qantas museum.

That sounds pretty Kino not gonna lie, but I don't think I have the time to go to the Northern Territories. Maybe if I fly, but driving from Darwin to Brisbane would probably take my whole trip. I'll think about that. and as this anon

It was ok but far too expensive for a country that is supposedly self sufficient. I remember being shocked at the price of fruit and veg, not to mention beer and cigarettes. The locals are not very friendly either.

Ignore the doomers on the nightlife, Sydney is a bit shit for a city of its size, but is still fine and Melbourne is great. Brisbane also has great nightlife and Gold Coast is good in a slightly seedier way. Not to mention you can have fun in a pub in most mid sized towns.

Tasmania, South Australia and Western Australia are all great but if you've only got 2 weeks, you'll be wasting a lot of time traveling. Also tassie is great but it's not typical australia that most tourist want to see.

Australian. But at 26 I threw it all in and traveled around Australia. Of course that doesnt give the real backpacker experience, but pretty close.

To work on a mine you need at a minimum a Working at Heights certificate. I havent paid for one in years but im guessing $200. And to actually get hired you'll probably need a Dogging Ticket and a Basic Rigging ticket. Which is now I think of it is probably $1000 all up.

But you it will be $50/h, 12h/day, at least 7 days straight on site with zero expenses (unless you buy a coffee in the morning). Dont get sucked into the exploitative cafe/fruitpicker bullshit.

              >Would you recommend visiting Adelaide?
Adelaide has fantastic food, an actual nightlife district (Hindley/Rundle St, but their sidestreets are where the real fun is, with heaps of fantastic wienertail bars, especially Peel St & Leigh St), and is very easy to commute around, along with being far cheaper than Melbourne and Sydney.
As far as beaches go, Adelaide has a lot of nice ones, though if you prefer warmer water and more of a beachside culture, then you'd want Queensland.
If you're coming to Adelaide, there's also a fair few worldclass wineries less than a half hour out of the CBD, and a great deal of great distilleries and breweries. If you're not a drinker, there's fantastic walking trails through the parklands and the Adelaide Hills. It's pretty easy to get to nature from Adelaide too.

It was ok but far too expensive for a country that is supposedly self sufficient. I remember being shocked at the price of fruit and veg, not to mention beer and cigarettes. The locals are not very friendly either.

      Cairns is fricking vile.

      >full of Black folk

        Nah. Good things about Cairns;
        - good tropical rain in the arvos
        - pub on every corner
        - sitting on the pub verandah as it pisses down
        - bombing scooters through the hills
        - having a cute 40kg Taiwanese coolie pedal your rishshaw home after the pub

      This guy again.

Does anyone know how backpackers find long term housing? Or should I just GTFO of Cairns? Everyone I've spoken to whos been through there has told me that the town is mid at best, and that Im better off finding my way to Perth for diving work or Sydney/Melbourne for hospitality

Also not that this matters, but wouldnt Australians in general be sick of backpackers, particularly American ones? A friend of mine told me I'd be a bit of a rarity as its mostly European gap year kids, but who knows. Asking because I primarily work as a bartender in tourist towns and I get sick of them myself

When you get to a new city you'll likely hold up in a hostel until you find a place to rent on facebook or gumtree. How long that takes all depends on your standards. Many backpacker oriented jobs will provide housing. And many backpackers are too lazy anyways and just live longterm in hostels.

When I was there, it seemed like there was more work in Port Douglas than Cairns. But if you are a bartender just get your tickets and start asking around. There's bars on every corner in Australia.

Nobody cares that you are American. People are more sick of eurotrash hippies.

I am from Melbourne but I am confused about Cairns for sure.

Adelaide is not a tourist city, it's a livable city.

I'm 27 and it seems like virtually everyone heading to Aus for backpacking is like 18, not sure how much mingling i'll do

      that seems pretty neat

Small, ultra middle class city. Expensive rent.

Being small means great livability, easy to get around, bush just down the road, city is 20min away max. Super middle class means very few deros, abos, lebs, scummy teenagers, Holden Captiva drivers; also plenty of restaurants, clothes shops, fancy pubs. Expensive rent because of all the middle class NIMBY politics.

Canberras good. I'd live there again.

Just go to Japan or New Zealand.
I fricking live in Aus and can barely motivate myself to go on holidays here.
You could possibly stretch Tasmania, North Queensland, a few coastal beaches and Kakadu national park as the highlights but that will be 3 days spent on packing, planes and airports.

        >Just go to Japan or New Zealand.
I'm not ruling out Japan, since the flight time's going to be about the same but staying there is much cheaper. Plus it's more interesting of a culture change. If I end up going elsewhere besides Australia it will probably end up being cost since your country is quite expensive.

Still, I'd rather your country for a bit since I'm already planning to go to other non-english speaking places this year and I would like to spend some time abroad without the headache of translation for once.

Not sure how New Zealand compares but I can't see myself going there in place of Australia. I'm sure it's beautiful and all, but I'd like warmer weather for this trip. Do you think it would be exciting as a solo traveler with all that time?

Is it actually easy to get laid because of the male/female ratio there or is that just a tired meme that just won't die. A friend of mine had "confirmed it" but he is more or less a good looking dude that doesn't have much issue regardless

Australia's Gender Ratio is .99 males to females. Compared to USA's .97. So I can't see any reason to believe that's the case. It could be something that USED to be true, something that's true regionally, or most likely it's just a bullshit rumor

I've heard its more that Australian women considered the local men undesirable compared to foreigners because Aussie men like to get drunk with their mates and slap the woman when they come home around whereas Americans go overboard trying to impress the women they date. This may be a generational thing.

Any reason why only 2 weeks?

Like other anons said; must do's:
    >Melbourne for nightlife, food, culture/city/architecture - Great Ocean road is awesome too
    >Gold Coast for beaches, hinterland, party-esque vibe
    >Cairns (Port Douglas) for scenery, snorkelling, wildlife/rainforest, good backpacking scene
That's pretty much your two weeks.

    >Tasmania if you have time and want a quieter/more NZ vibe with mountains/unique coastlines
    >WA has awesome reefs/beaches but it's to far away from everything else to justify in such a short trip.
    >Adelaide for wineries, but same sort of experience can be done at the Victorian peninsulas/Yarra Valley.
    >Sydney is pretty meh but go for a day or two if you want to check out Manly/Bondi and the harbour. Blue Mountains is cool, but can do Grampians in Victoria instead too.
