Avoiding pickpockets

Post tips on how to avoid getting pickpocketed or stories of pickpockets you've encountered. Going to Paris (Ugh, I know!) at the end of the month and despite having a hidden passport holder (loops on belt and hides under pants) and being a 6ft confidence chad I could do with some tips to avoid getting fricked by brown hands

Unitoncially the zoomer fanny pack across the chest meme.

I bit the bullet and did this in Vietnam for a month as I stumbled down the streets every night drunk or on copious ammounts of ketamine or MDMA and never lost anything there expect my dignity.

Where were you in VN? Did you always feel safe?

Saigon and some rural areas. And yes..though scammers and touts are abundant in the city and you have to be confident in telling them to frick off. I had a cabbie try to do slight of hand on my cash wad which I stupidly let him hold. If you get agressive they will instantly back down though.

Stumbling piss drunk alone in a poor neighborhood? Maybe still would feel safe tbh but I have at least a foot on tall vietnamese dudes. VN is similar to China levels of safeness and they hate foreigners less.

This can encapsulse this entire thread. Just buy one of these shoulder strap bags, make sure you actually put your shit in there, and don't get extremely wasted and you'll be fine.

Just don't look like a mark, Simple. My gf nearly got robbed in Barcelona, We were at the fire parade and I was dancing and shit. She's not much of a party person, So just stood watching and taking picture and shit. I turned around and walked back to her and there were two pakis behind her unzipping her back, One of them clocked me walking towards them and they scuttled off into the crowd. Gave my gf a telling off and told her to be more aware and wear her bag on her front.

you should line your pockets with sand paper, then wait till someone screams in pain after trying to rob your empty pockets

There is a non-zero change that you get stabbed by a gypsy or an Algerian gentleman if they don't appreciate your lighthearted prank.

never carry anything in your ass pockets, put important shit either inside your front pants pocket, burried deep in your backpack or in an inside pocket. If you bump into someone frontally immediately stop and check your front pockets

    Backpack on front.
I look dumb but nobody can do shit.

Put your wallet in your front pocket. If anyone touches you for any reason you grab their wrist immediately and check your wallet and watch.
    >Some guy with a ton of shopping bags stumbles as he gets into the train? Check your wallet.
    >Some Black person starts putting a bracelet on you for no reason? Check your wallet.
    >Super friendly old guy starts patting you on the shoulder like a buddy and getting up in your face inviting you someplace? Where's your wallet?
    >Bunch of gypsy kids surround you and start touching you everywhere? Roundhouse kick and check your wallet.
    >Fall asleep on a train? Check your wallet.
The only people who get pick pocketed are either completely relaxed and defenseless, or too polite to tell people to frick off. Those security belts are gay as frick, by the way.

Why the frick do people put their wallet in their back pockets? Do they have permanent ass anesthesia while sitting or something? It's like sitting on a rock for the love of fricking god

I kicked some kids in fear of getting robbed when I was on a trip to Malaysia a few years back. I got into trouble with both the police and locals. Turns out the kids were just being too excited seeing a foreigner like me and just wanted to interact with me (practising their English)

    >Ugh, I know !

Parisian here, never got anything stolen in Paris. Been living there for 10 years now, in the good AND the bad parts.

Here are the 3 things you can do to avoid any kind of issues :
    >Don't be completely fricking drunk during night outs
    >Put your important belongings in zippered or buttoned areas (e.g your coat) but if you're not a complete dumbass even your pockets are more than enough
    >Be wary of anyone (ANYONE, not just Black folk and arabs, pickpockets are usually the ones you least expect) being overtly friendly

This is how people steal your shit :

    >If you leave it all over the place (the ground, a bistrot table
    >If you're in a crowded area (e.g crowded metro) and your backpack on in your back or if you have stuff in your back pocket
    >if you walk by yourself in the 19th arrondissement at night

So, basically take the same precautions you would in every other city.

      Will pickpockets steal souvenirs?
I'm going to Europe during winter so i'll be amongst a lot of Christmas markets and stuff.
I was planning on carrying all the important shit on my person but was going to bring a backpack for souvenirs, water bottle, etc.
Surely gypsy pickpockets wouldn't give a shit about wooden toys and baubles right?

I was walking around in La Défense this weekend and a gypsy woman with kids at her side and a baby in a baby-stroller asked me for change. Failing that, she asked me to step into a store with her so I could buy her kids something to eat. I refused and walked away.

Was this unchristian of me? I know the scams they run, that they manipulate people by keeping young kids with them (even keeping them out of school so they can run the scams all week-long). Is this the only way to fight gypsies?

Yes, gypsies just want your money and nothing else.

Never, ever trust a gypsy. They are always out to scam you, 100%.

    How do people get pickpocketed?
In crowded places just keep your hands in your pockets and you cant be pickpocketed. Also dont be the most clueless looking tourist, if there are easier targets they arent going to try that shit on you.
Never been pickpocketed and those are the only tips I follow.

Get a lightweight money belt like pic related. It's not a boomer fanny pack. They can go literally underneath your pants or shorts and are pretty much invisible. Imagine carrying your belongings in your pockets in 2022.

yup this thing works, used it in SE asia to hold big bills. only downside is taking shit out of it is a pain because you are either taking the whole thing out of your pants and need to tuck it back in or you are pulling the front of your pants waistband to access the pocket and it looks like you are taking a gander at your nuts

Just turn it so that the pouch is on your leg.

Buy a sling bag with a single zipper, put all of your belongings in it, and lock it tight with a cable lock like (https://a.co/d/8Sdo4uY). If you do this then you won't have to be paranoid anytime someone bumps into you or tries to initiate conversation.

Faanny pack with an awkward opening mechanism worn frontally.
I've always done this and never had any issues with pickpockets. I think credit/debit card fraud is a bigger issue nowadays.

I am Italian and i live in the north, when i was in Rome i had a backpack with me and there was just a bottle of water in it, pickpocketers go for it more than your pockets. Keep only junk or things that you don't care losing like your water, it will be used as a bait for pickpocketers
