Ive ridden moto from north to southern chile all the way to Ushuaia Argentina the most southern city in the world, ama. I don't know how you're going to get to antarctica. Unless it's a stupid day trip.

If you're looking for something more adventurous, there is a developing wilderness route called the Greater Patagonian Trail that runs from Santiago south to Patagonia.

This was kind of my idea, with some stops through towns just to see them. Since the country is so narrow I thought it may be a great way to see the variety of biomes the country has. still a decent way to go even from half way so that may be a more realistic option

are you being serious or is this a bit of trolling? ive heard chile is pretty safe but im not really interested in getting fricked up obviously. im not a meek dude but obviously that doesnt mean shit if theyre just gonna point a gun at me because i look like a walking wallet.

how were the roads? are they clearly marked? did you see any other backpackers?

it probably would be a stupid day trip honestly. i havent really planned that part too much, its just kind of a secondary thing so i can say ive been to all 7 continents. its silly, but whatever.

I think every road in the world is mostly marked. Yeah it's very easy to navigate the further you travel south because there are much fewer roads, plus locals understand you're doing the Ushuaia run so anyone will give your directions.

Venezuleans and criminals in general are a trouble in the north (Iquique, Antogayasta) and Santiago (the south part of Santiago like Puente Alto or La Pintana but you wont go there because there's nothing to see there except poor people). The south, Concepción is kinda dangerous but because is a big city, is really safe. Note that when I say dangerous is dangerous to Chilean standarts. We are not like other countries in the region like Brazil or Venezuela, there you get kill and robbed easily.

Your idea is good, many tourists do this, even exchange students do it, but going to Antarctica is strange. I don't know if it is possible at all. People live there but they are mostly militars and scientifics, in Villa Las Estrellas for expample .

I can resume the country to you like this:

The north (Arica to La Serena) desert and many many foreigns, like Peruvians and Venezuelans. You should see (I've never been there by the way, just telling you what every Chilean know): Valle de la Luna, Las salitreras, Morro de Arica (I guess), if you are lucky and in the right time of the year El desierto florido (flowers grow in the desert and it's very beautiful) Buy cheap stuff in Iquique (zone without taxes) Be carefull, dumbass venezuelans are very hated in the north because they are illegals and rob people. Also, enjoy the beaches!!

Valpariso: Good to drink, party. I think it has cultural places also, very famous but I don't care.

Viña del Mar: near Valparaiso but more expensive, if you have money, go have a good time and visit the Reloj de Flores. Here you can also enjoy beautiful beaches.

If you go to Santiago, don't go the south (or west) zone. Stay in Providencia, Santiago, Las Condes, etc. This are basically rich cities so it's like the first world of Chile.
In this map, green areas are safe, rich and have many services to tourists and shit like that you know. Cultural places bla bla. Santiago has many historical places (many museums!!!)

I skip the central zone of chile because looks boring to me honestly: Talca, Chillán, bla bla. who cares.

Concepción, to me is like Valparaiso. If you are young, is a dream. Party, dancing, drugs, alcohol, etc. Big city, so be careful.

Temuco, skip this city if you want, not to much to do. I live here and it sucks. This city (and region) is well known for the indigenous Mapuche. If you like that kinda stuff go and learn about them if you want. There are tourism about their culture, im sure. Also, if you want real italian food outside of Italy, go to Capitan Pastene, it's a small town in this region, only Italians live there, they speak spanish and they sell good food.

Osorno: Boring ass city, Germans, Palestinians, bla bla. Who cares. just old people live there.

Valdivia: Visit this, very touristic. Germans have good restaurants and beers.

Puerto Montt: Also kinda touristic. Enjoy the sea food and shit like.

Chiloe: UNESCO Churches, not so great to me but if you like history or achitecture, you are gonna like it, it has like 200 churches. Also, food is really great, and the Isle has many touristic places so you will be ok.

Aysen region: very beautiful, no one lives here so it has many nature places. I recommend Las Catedrales de Marmol.

Magallanes: Again, no one lives here, much nature so enjoy. Torres del Paine, the most visited place in Chile probably, Hollywood actors love this place for some reason. Punta Arenas is not big I think, it has a Russian palace or something like that. You can go visit La cueva del milodon, it has many fossils.

Note: I skip many places of course, I don't know every place in my country. You should go to national parks, we are very famous for that. Like Parque Conguillio.

thank you very much for the info! this is all great stuff. sounds like i will have to make some considerations for taking motor travel at least a bit to avoid some of the less inviting/safe areas. it may well make it more interesting though!

yeah, don't worry. Chile is safe. When you are in a dangerous place you will know. The differences between poor cities and rich cities in Santiago it's very noticeable.
Even to me, a dumb small city provinciano, places that I felt in danger, where not dangerous at all.
In Santiago try to visit the Museo de Historia Nacional, Museo de Historia Natural, Museo de la Memoria and the cathedral (beware, the Cathedral and Museo de Historia Natural are in the Plaza de armas, many peruvians are there and foreign homeless people, I don't know what to expect from them).

If you have trouble, ask the young people, the average college Chilean knows english.

Oh I forgot, the one thing that the central zone really is woth it, it's the wine (our wine is better than many French wines). We have unique wine strains here, so if you like that you will have a good time.

very cool man, i will probably want to visit the wine country just because i like vineyard areas. thank you for such a detailed answer! i really appreciate it!

tourists don't have the same experience, they're easy targets for scams
