Best cell plan for travel?

What are you guys using for data while travelling? Do you have an international plan, or are you buying sim cards as you go along? How much do you pay?

I'm out of the country for work over half the year, so I'd like a better alternative than gouging my wallet. Also, plans at home aren't great as it stands (canada)

Very good for travel but they will kick you off if you're outside of the US for more than 3 months at a time

Again I've never had that issue even being outside for +3 months never even got a warning nearing 90 days and I just spent a fair bit of time overseas. The only people I've ever seen complaining about it are using their fi instance for all internet, using an old plan.

Same up until last month, after roughly 2 years of use... I was crushed and can no longer use it. Kek. I was not even American to begin with, I just bought access from someone and paid the bills. Sucks.

Also, I can still use my google voice number and login to messages via data only if the Fi card were to stop. You don't lose access to anything other than the sim card potentially being locked until it hits a US tower.

Do you mean you can use Google Voice with the number on your Fi plan? Does that work with 2FA?

You can get a Google Voice number as a US citizen for free with a gmail account, as long as you have some kind of wifi/data link you can take and get calls from it. I have a Fi number and throwaway google voice number.

I get 2FA codes to it all the time, generally just use google auth on my backup phone though.

Does Google Voice work even if you change to a foreign sim card? Can I receive text messages internationally through that Google Voice number without international fees?

It literally works as long as you have data, I can send/recieve text messages from my browser, make phone calls, etc. Hell when I do short get away's and only taking my chromebook I just do all my phone shit checking via my chromebook.

Google voice out of the country costs cash, texts are free.

    NOT VERIZON

Fricking bastards. I spent like $200 for a simple 1 month trip around europe because I got conned by them into their international options. Blah blah I should've bought a sim card, I know I know.

T-Mobile is much better. Don't have to change anything, it just works abroad.

I've used google fi for a month long trip, it's not bad. I considered using it as a full time service just for the included international coverage. Uses T-Mobile network in my home area.

There are two international options to choose from and you chose the $10/day option on a month long trip instead of the $100/month plan didn't you.

No, I chose the $100 month plan. There's ADDITIONAL data charges on top of that. You'll easily blow through the measly 5 gigs or whatever comes with that plan, then have to shell out more money for more gigs. It's dogshit and added up to like 200 bucks, I don't remember the exact itemization.

Meanwhile with T-Mobile you just show up abroad and shit works. Tada. No extra costs.

If you’re out of the country over half the year for work, why isn’t your company already providing you with an international plan? My wife uses a company phone with unlimited everything everywhere, and she doesn’t travel more than a handful of weeks per year.

Personally, because I’m kind of lazy, I just pay for an international plan with one of the local providers in my country—I’ve got unlimited everything anywhere in Europe or North America (the regions I inhabit and call most often), and I can buy data packages for other places for not all that much; roaming calls are pretty cheap anywhere they’re not unlimited. It’s kind of a pricey plan (I think it’s the equivalent of a little over $100/mo?) , but I use it, and I’m lazy, so I just suck it up.

I wish, they charge me $5.00 an hour for internet as it is. Also I’m not American so google fi might be tricky for me. Even if I were to get it set up there are times where I may go a year without entering the USA.
