First off, it doesn’t look like that in person. Take a good camera and tripod.

Tasmania and NZ, are great for the southern lights, but you can’t predict the magnetic solar storms easily. Some sites give a 2 day notice of ‘possible’ activity.
Also where the North/South auroras happen the sky is usually cloudy.

I personally find Tasmania best, because it has auroras, luminous waters, fireflies and glowing fungi.

Kp 7-9 storms are quite rare.

Abisko looks cool but you can't wild camp there and I don't want to stay in a hostel (need private space).

I might still be able to go but I think visa situation has changed now they are in a proxy war with most of Europe and US.

Tasmania looks cool but probably costs a lot than going to Scandinavia for me

Not changed at all, in fact it might get easierto get a visa soon if you plan to fly in (obviously not directly from the EU) due to their unified e-visa regime.

          >(obviously not directly from the EU)
there are half a dozen other options that cost less and don't require applying for a visa, or taking multiple flights, where half the locals won't (justifiably) hate me because of my accent.
I want to visit Russia but this is not the time.

Why Russia and not Northern Norway? Tromsø and Lofoten are pretty popular Northern lights spots.

I assumed Norway was very expensive but a developed city would be ideal. I would preferably like to be in a hotel room with access to a supermarket rather than in some $1000 a night 'polar experience' yurt or trapped in a remote hostel with unwashed youths

Norway is definitely expensive (alcohol and gas in particular), but the Norwegian kroner took a huge dip in recent years so things are more affordable now than you might think.

I don't drive anyway but I'd probably want to drink a lot because it's freezing and there's nothing to do except wait for it to be dark. Norway seems like the best option right now though, not sure all the added effort of going to some remote Swedish wilderness park is worth it.

Honestly, hotels in Norway were not that expensive. It was the only thing that was pretty much by European standards of price (excluding southern and eastern Europe). Everything else was more expensive, especially the alcohol. But hotels were alright, not any more expensive than in the UK or touristic parts of France.

Go somewhere that's interesting for things not related to northern lights
I've seen them about as spectacular as they come and it was neat but I wouldn't ever pay hundreds let alone thousands of dollars just to see them
Also, could be cloudy so have a backup plan

There is literally nothing else appealing about Scandinavia to me. I'd only be able to pull ugly girls there, it's freezing cold and the food is awful. I was going to just read books and day drink every day, I read the probability is pretty high if you stay for a week and stay up all night.

Literally same food as everywhere else and what is wrong with reindeer and game meat.

everyone pretends to like fish because it's extremely healthy but it only tastes good when mixed with tons of other shit like lemon garlic sauce. Just fish with lingonberries and their weird ass sauces isn't good. reindeer is just overpriced beef and they don't know how it grill meat properly

I'm going to iceland. Easiest place to fly to from USA, mildest weather for the latitude, and simple traversal once there. I considered Norway or Sweden but it would have added too much time to the trip unfortunately.

Iceland is the easiest place to reach but I never managed to see the northern lights despite having been there twice in winter already. Weather is way too unpredictable so you just need to pray that you'll get perfect weather during your trip.

I know a hotel in Kiruna, Sweden offers aurora borealis safaris and has panoramic skylights on the top floor with a bar and sun loungers if you are looking for the ultimate boomer adventure. If you really want to splurge you can stay at the ice hotel which is bound to offer similar experiences. I'm sure other Nordic hotels that far north have all kinds of ways to monetize the northern lights for you as well. But yeah, Iceland, Norway, Sweden and Finland are all expensive.

Also keep in mind that you need luck and timing. After spending two to four weeks in Lapland every winter on military exercises for years it wasn't until my seventh exercise that I finally saw the northern lights. (so a total of 12-14 weeks of camping over many years lol) I seem to have been exceedingly unlucky though and I missed at least one shot I had before.

Saw them in northwest Iceland last November on our last chance to see them. Real incredible, but unless you get a 10 chance a Aurora day it’ll look like smears in the sky that slowly turns green if you’re lucky. Still pretty incredible.
