Best way to get an expedited passport.

Hi SighSee I'm travelling to japan in 4 weeks, what's the best site to use to get an expedited passport? Mine has expired, I'm from the USA, I'm going for an artist residency. I read you can get it within 1-2 weeks, I'd love that.

Go on the state department passport website. It will tell you how to apply for expedited service. They'll tell you it will still take forever but it will probably come sooner.

Yes, i have to renew mine, i see with expedited it says 5-7 weeks. Is it better just to book my trip for november instead? I was hoping to do october because of how cold it gets weather wise in november.

You can ask for "expedited from agency" service. That means you have to go apply in person at one of their offices. That still takes a few weeks.

I mean I did the expedited by mail. I didn't apply in person like anon above was saying.

I have no idea where in the USA you are, but if you're within commuting distance to a passport agency you can make an appointment with one and do it all in person--drop off, pick up and pay a few days later. It's possible to get one in as little as 24 hours this way (I've done it twice, once for me and once for my kids), but within a working week (3-4 working days) is more typical.

Officially, appointments are only available for emergencies or imminent travel (leaving in less than a few weeks, outbound ticket as proof), but I've found them fairly flexible in practice. Once I said I had booked no tickets yet because I had to get a bunch of visas, but I needed to travel "soon," (this was actually true, just vague) and the second time, when I renewed my kids' passports, I just told them I needed the new passport numbers for the airline (also sort of true, but I wasn't sure when I said it).

Note that this is an official US Gov't Passport Agency, not a post office or any third-party vendor; there are a large handful nationwide:

I also had surprisingly quick turnaround when I last renewed by mail, but I am living abroad. Dropped off forms and old passport at a consulate, which pouched my application to the States [embassies and consulates no longer manufacture or modify passports on-site], presumably pouched it back to be mailed to me from the consulate (I used only local postage, no US stamps). I got the new passport in the mail not much more than a week later, much faster than I was expecting. But I have no idea what processing speeds are like for "domestic" renewals at the moment

    Ausgay here
I was overseas when my passport needed renewing
Went to the embassy, filled out a form, it was sent overnight mail back to Sydney, processed and sent back to me within 3 days
Was honestly quite surprised, they told me it'd take a couple of weeks

Yeah, the US is the most shit country to acquire a passport in... for some reason.
      >at least we don't have to have it witnessed by random people who know you

You can get one in literally 72 hours. You have to call the state department, print out your boarding passes. Go get a passport picture (CVS, walgreens, most pharmacies will do one). Don't try to take one yourself, just spend 15 bucks making sure it's done right. If you have proof of a very soon flight already paid for, and have all your shit together, then it's easy. They'll keep you on hold for a while before they talk to you, and you will have to go to a federal building to pick it up in person. It's called "expedited at agency".

You must have a flight booked NO MORE than two weeks from when you call them to make the appointment. Sooner the better. It's truly for "last second" people. They don't want anyone trying to get that shit done four weeks early early, they will only help you if it's desperation-level.

Don't do anything else except for "expedited at agency". I got my passport literally one day before I left. It likely won't be ready "same day", they'll have to print/bind it and shit.

      "print out your boarding passes"

Sorry. I meant "receipts" of your flight. Your record locator, when you will be leaving, what airports, and proof of purchase. There will also be a form that you will need to print out and fill out in pen. Print this form too, have it filled out and ready before you step foot into that federal office.

They'll want that, the picture, and your old passport if you have one. You'll need to take that all to the federal building in person, it will help them get your shit done quickly. Then you will have to go back to the building, and pick up your passport.
