Brazil

Traveling for the first time out of country to Brazil. The furthest I've been before is only 3 hour drive from home. Any advice for a 20 hour flight and one month trip?

Where are you from and wich cities in Brazil are you going to visit?

I'm from USA. The plan so far is Sao Paulo, Paraty, Rio, Ilha Grande, and possibly Minas. Going to be there for a month and I'm actually leaving tonight

Rio city is the most dangerous place of your list. You can be murdered there if you try to venture into a favela in its outskirts. In São Paulo you may be mugged at most. Also, avoid São Paulo's oldtown past 3~4 p.m., it gets packed with crackheads quickly by the evening. São Paulo's countryside is safe, Minas is safe too. Have cash because your cards may not be accepted in small business in some places depeding on wich card you have (like amex or dinners club, visa or mastercard are accepted everywhere here). Minas is well worthy of a visit if you like colonial towns and rural landscapes. If you are hispanic you will blend anywhere in São Paulo, if you are White or Black, prefer the company of White/White looking locals or hispanic looking types.

I'm just gonna stay in copa, leblon, etc most likely. I'm planning on withdrawing cash, but my gf also has pix so it should be okay. Right now I just have a really loose schedule. I'm gonna be in sao paulo for like 5 days about. Gonna see the avenue paullista on sunday and then leave probably

Not true for Rio, he would be mugged at worst. I know this because I've lived here my whole life.
OP just stick to touristy areas:
Copacabana, Leblon, Ipanema, Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas, Jardim Botânico, Botafogo, and Leme. You could also visit the national forest we have in the middle of the city, its got a bunch of cool trails you could do. Bico do Papagaio is my favorite, the view is great. If you're feeling adventurous there's also a hidden trail in the Sumaré road, it goes to Mesa to Emperador or right back to the forest. The view there is probably one of the best in the City
You probably won't need a guide for those if you just stay on the path, but honestly the vegetation is so dense I doubt you'll wander off easily.
I highly recommend you try our restaurants, there's a bunch of options. Take a look at the Michelin Guide for Rio if you're interested, they suggest a bunch of cool and unique restaurants.
I've lived here for 21 years and I haven't even done everything there is to do in this place. You should look for a guide book/article to help you make the most out of your trip.
As for crime, don't really worry about it, you just need some common sense

        Let's go
        >São Paulo
As you'll arrive there it's your place for resting, which is fine. Just wander on Av. Paulista to see the vibe, maybe getting some souvenirs at 1000th Brazilian McDonald's (btw, one of things I like to do is to go to a McDonald's in a country and eat some unique stuff there. In Brazilian case we have the Cheddar McMelt hamburger and banana pie. But São Paulo has a lot to offer in terms of food. Try local pizza (if you want to be nasty, put ketchup on it). Also try Japanese food on Liberdade district (avoid weekends) or in Japanese gyudon chain Sukiya (their fried chicken is fricking delicious). In terms of Museums, go to MASP and Pinacoteca, but with a warning: they have the fricking worst curation I have ever saw in my life, being woke as frick. Appreciate the paintings and don't read their "interpretation".
If you are degenerated, São Paulo has maybe the most underrated prostitution scene in the world. Go to a massage parlour house in Moema or Indianapolis (sic) district.
Security issues: just don't be dumb, stay alert on your surroundings, don't bring too much value with you, be sure where you are going and you'll be ok.
        >Paraty
        I'll talk on it later
        >Ilha Grande
Although it is on the typical gringo route on Brazil, it is worth of it. Take your sunscreen. Also, get a UV-filtered shirt. You'll thank me later.
        >Rio
Make all cliché stuff. If you are going to watch a football match in Maracanã, avoid local derbis (same advice for São Paulo btw). If possible, get a guided tour for going into the city highlights, because Rio traffic is fricking horrible.
Stay strictly on touristic areas and avoid favelas. Also, the no-go zones in Rio are really a no-go zone: put you foot wrongly there and you are dead.
On degeneration stuff: Rio is famous for the "termas" and "fast-fodas", but as I never banged in Rio I cannot talk much about it.
        >Again Paraty
Paraty has the best Estrada Real (Royal Road) branch. It is worth of it.

It's not that common anymore and it was never common for tourists. You should be fine unless you actually go inside a favela to buy drugs or go to a sketchy brothel flaunting wealth.

Bumping. I'm new to Brazil. Love it here - delicious food, cheap booze, friendly people, lovely weather, amazing women.
But does anyone know how to get weed (in minecraft) relatively safely? My gf is Brazilian but she's somewhat sheltered and doesn't have any connections.

You can get it by asking for "maconha" (muh-coin-ah) or "beck" (like the singer).
It's illegal so you'd better either find some hippie looking college student, that would probably be safer for you. If you're in São Paulo I'd say the safest bet would be Augusta street, they love minecraft.

Bumping because I'm thinking about visiting Santa Caterina. Probably be in SP for a day or two, but I want to see if I can fly into Curitiba instead. I kinda want to spend a day just riding a motorbike around country roads... but rental bikes seem so expensive... like 2-3x the price of a car rental! Also, hows the cooming in SC?

Is Barra da Tijuca a good place to stay in Rio for a week? I was planning to stay in the area not too far from the metro so I could still get to the rest of Rio without much trouble, is it safe to walk around that area at night?

      Anonymous

It's a good place to live but would not recommend it for general tourism. Better to stay in Zona Sul (Ipanema, Leblon...). Good place to go to the beach but you have to use car for everything else. Unless you are really close to some hubs of shops (Barra da Tijuca is a big neighborhood). The neighborhoods at Zona Sul are much more walkable with bars, restaurants and shops pretty much every block.

Barra da Tijuca is a good district, but it has a huge disadvantage on being almost as another city. Much is said on Rio's violence, but I must also add that Rio's transit is also hellish - some consider even worse than São Paulo.

I guess that's the price in luxury places in SP. Up to 2018, when I used to go to those places, I would pay 100-150 usd for the girl for whole night plus the entrance and drinks and motel. The night would cost me 300 usd. But that was 5 years ago and in upscale places (scandallo, cafe photo).

I was thinking of buying property there to get the permanent resident visa, is it possible to find anything decent for the $200k minimum? It also says it has to be in an urban area to qualify

Depends of your definition of decent. In expensive cities (first grade capitals), that would mean a 60sqm flat in a great neighborhood or a 90sqm in a nice middle class neighborhood. In smaller cities and/or less developed states perhaps you could get a decent house or a 200 sqm flat. The guy above that said you could get a mansion is delusional. Unless you want to buy a house in the middle of nowhere with low quality construnction and horrible aesthetics.
My 150sqm in a middle class neighborhood in SP os worth 300k usd. My friend's 90 sqm house in zona sul of Rio de Janeiro (but not the most expensive neighborhoods) is worth 300k as well. Expect to pay 2k usd per square meter in any good neighborhood in a big city (Salvador, Curitiba...). In the most expensive cities and neighborhoods the price could be about the triple of that (RJ, SP).

Coomer here. OF and the pandemic really ruined the prostitution scene here (even if it's still amazing compared to most other countries). Although 200 USD and up would only be charged by the cream of the top, prettier higher end girls still charge about 100 usd an hour. Specially in São Paulo and Rio, because of increasing rent prices

American here. You gotta understand that $200 gets you the most disgusting slam pig old prostitutes here. Mid chicks are $500. Anything an actual 9/10? Lol $1000 an hour ez. You guys have no idea how real the pussy prison is in the US.

$200 for an absolute smoke show is a rip off you say? Fricking kek. Okay.

Only 1% of brazilians make more than 4k usd a month. But I do get your point. I'd rather spend those 2-300 usd with a girl from a boate (nightclub-like brothel) that will come to your place (or you to hers) and stay all night than hiring a luxury escort per hour (2-3 hours she would charge that) though. But US does sucks for those kind of relations.

            Anonymous

Brother, you don't seem to understand. For 1000$, you could approach any girl in a bar and ask her to frick you, 9/10 times she'll say yes. I'd let someone rape my ass for 1000$. The economy here is BAD. You'd be giving them 2 months worth of salary, possibly 3, in my case almost 4, for a experience they were already there for. So long as you're a decent looking guy with 1000$ in your pocket and isn't a total creep, you can make any party girl your prostitute. No need for hookers, risking STDs, worrying about pimps.

              Anonymous

Just don't approach a girl with a boyfriend kek, Brazilian women are pretty headstrong. That'd earn ya a nice red slap mark on your face, and a possible boyfriend beatdown

              Anonymous

Lol. Why pay 1000 if you can get a escort for all night for 2-300? And any escort that charge that will be a lesser risk of STD than any random girl in a bar that is willing to have casual sex, specially those willing to get paid for that. Upscale escorts do get tested every month/2 months and are much cleaner than the average thot. Obviously, upscale escorts not street hookers.

Do not use wrist watches, do not take out your phone out on the street, not even to look at Google maps, do not dress like a rich person if possible, beware of two men in bycicles following you, stay near crowded areas, never go into alleyways and streets with no one in sight. São Paulo and Rio are really dangerous. I'd recommend the South for something safer but tbh there's not much to see here beyond national parks.

The biggest ones are, not in a particular order:
          - USP
          - Unicamp
          - Unesp
          - UFRJ
          - UFMG
          - UFRGS
          - UFSC
          - UnB
Bonus for ITA and IME in engineering, FGV, Ibmec and Insper (all private) for business, Unifesp for medicine and UFV, UFRRJ and UFLA for agronomy. In general public universities in Minas Gerais state are really good in engineering. Catholic Pontifician Universities (PUCs), privates, are a mixed bag: some courses are top-tier, some are not.
