California outside the cities: I'm interested in knowing whether there are interesting place to visit outside the shitholes of LA and SF. The only place I've been in the state was San Diego, which was nice, and now I'd like to know if there's any interesting stuff in the interior or the rural parts of the coast. Are these affordable places to settle or visit or is the entire state unlivable?

go up north past San Francisco. See the Red Woods. Fricking unreal, largest beings on earth. Coolest aspect of California in my opinion.

      yep, this.

i live in fresno and have spent a ton of time in central and southern California. I really like San Diego, but a few months ago I drove to Portland and went up the 1 through the highway of the Redwoods and, well, holy shit. Insane views. Immense trees in lush, green forests on either side of you for hundreds of miles only broken apart by views of beautiful rocky beaches.

Check it out OP. They want to secede as the State of Jefferson

also, just so u know theres nothing really of value to see in the central valley. shit weather, shit roads, shit people, shit scenery

The most affordable and nice area to live in California is the east, but it's difficult to find a good paying job out there and the weather isn't nearly as nice as the coast, though it's much better in both weather and livability than the central valley. Most of the North coast is getting pretty expensive though it is very nice (Eureka is the only city on the west coast to have never gone above 80 degrees ever)

Central Valley is one of the best place to see birds during migration. I went to Merced NWR during the winter and it was absolutely unreal.
Watching the entire sky get covered up with 100s of thousands of geese is something that can only be described as a natural wonder of the world.
There are plenty of refuges strewn all across the valley and they are pretty unknown which really let's it feel untouched.

Yeah, I know about Jefferson. The Seqoyah forests look comfy as frick. The pacific northwest in general has amazing nature. I've been to BC and Vancouver Island and wherever you go, nature is there.

if you want an affordable town filled with beautiful nature you should check out Oakhurst, it's the biggest town near Yosemite
i lived there for a couple of years. due to it being so close to Yosemite, it gets a lot of foreign visitors so there's some really good restaurants

            What about the Redding area?

im not the person you replied to but I know a thing or two

the west side of redding is a genuine shithole. the east side is actually quite nice. in the middle of the city there is a place called turtle bay and i think of it as a small zoo with lots of cool animals. the Redding area is close to Mount Shasta, Lassen Volcanic National Park and if you want to go to the coasts you go on highway 299 and that takes you thru trinity county with some nice roadside views of the river near the highway. Affordability is ok for a city though.

Funny you say that, west Redding is traditionally where the nicest houses and most of the doctors in town lived. For someone visiting it’s probably boring but the downtown area (technically west Redding) is getting better. While the homeless problem isn’t as bad as in larger cities, it is still a problem there.

Redding can be a good base for exploring the nature in Northern California. Lots of nearby or easy day trips for hiking, swimming, mountain biking, etc, and Redding will have any type of shopping or food you might want in between. I’d hit the Redwoods or north coast first but Redding would be a good pit stop. Mt. Shasta City is also nice but may not have everything you need if you need to resupply.

I haven't been to Redding in about 10 years. I was looking to move back to north ca and was thinking of Redding. I had family in red bluff growing up and visited there a few times too. Wondered if this area was like the rest of the valley (grew up in Bakersfield), or if it was more livable, because you can get a pretty decent deal on property there, and it's a perfect location since it's in north ca which is my favorite, just cruise over to the forest or Tahoe or eureka ez. Half my family lives in the valley half in Oregon it would be nice to drive to visit. I work from home, so I finally am free of urban centers and am looking outwards.

most areas along the 299, 44, I5 are quite clean and well kept. BUT the 273 and anywhere near that highway is just trashy. it always just looks so God Dam Messy everytime I head up to redding. I was referring to the 273 in my post.

Any of the national parks are cool

    Nowhere in California is affordable

The best way to visit would to have a car and camp

Hey buddy, think you could give me a quick run down on San Diego, thinking of moving there in a bit. Looking at pacific beach as it has a nice beach and theres a young crowd, young poon etc etc

I didn't get to visit much of the city, but it doesn't have too much of the drugs or homless problem. It's got great hiking trails, I like the vegetation, the food was good. The old town is also a nice place to visit, even though you can see it as a touristy place. I was lucky to go at a point where it wasn't too hot, it was cloudy, but keep in mind it's the exception there

pb is still affordable. We bought just north of there in bird rock but I grew up in pb and windansea. I wouldnt say its a young crowd though. more 30s&40s than 20s.. mission beach has more to offer for young poon.. more students live there. always more hopping there than in pb bars. the bars in pb get local-alized so you end up knowing everyone there. where as mb has more of a transient type of flow. tourists, college, locals and semi locals. If you want some random shit check out ocean beach. mix of people, rich and poor.. also point loma, liberty station is kind of fun like. plenty milfs night out and college hookups.

All of these neighborhoods you mentioned have a median home price > $800k. Anything coming close to affordable in SD would be south of the 8 or in east county.

There are plenty of rural areas with cheap rent. But why move to California if you want to live in the middle of nowhere? You could move to Waddy Kentucky for 1/10th the cost if you want rural.

I moved out to Orange County from Virginia 14 years ago. I pay $2400 for a one bedroom 800 square foot apartment in Dana Point. The advantages of living here are the jobs, the perfect weather, low crime rate, beautiful women, epic beaches, endless outdoor activities and the proximity to so many cool cities.

The downside is that everything is expensive as shit.

Now lets say you move up to Bakersfield. You could find an apartment for $1000/month, but you's be living next to Mexicans with 10 kids in the house, roaches coming under your door, mariachi music at 5 am, screaming through the walls, dirty baby diapers in the parking lot, drug dealers, etc etc etc. Same goes for Fresno, Oakland, Sacramento, Stockton, Barstow, Victorville, San Bernadino and about a million other less expensive cities in California.

Coloma or nevada city out east are comfy, the former being the gold panning town that started the gold rush boom and the other just being a cozy pioneer town. sebastopol or bodega bay are great for kinda sorta secluded coastal towns with nice green hills in all directions. Further past that is sea ranch which has great sea view and interesting architecture. Truckee or south lake tahoe are obviously good but absolutely packed with tourists
    >Are these affordable places to settle

I've been going to college in SF for two years now and Yosemite is definitely worth it. Get a bnb in a small town and hour outside of it with some pals and it's a great time. Incredibly red in the small towns there and the nature is nothing like I've ever seen. The park itself can get crowded but my dumbass ex sucked at directions and we actually started hiking on an abandoned ranger trail that had a whole view of the park with both waterfalls and El Capitan which was incredible. I love the Yosemite and Mammoth region

I'm going to San Diego next week. I have an ocean side hotel. My plan is to buy a bunch of edibles and eat a bunch of food and watch the sunset on the ocean. Is there anything else fun to do? Are the women there easy? If not are there any good escorts around?
