This, I just found some bottled water of the same brand and drank that instead. If I hadn't done that yet or ran low, I carefully took the stickers off the bottles and made sure to get replacements before the maids came back in.

That doesn't work any more in newer American hotels.
They installed sensors that automatically charge you when you move something in the minibar.
And guess what happens if you tell them you want an empty minibar to store your items?
They'll charge you for that as well!

Some hotels have an empty fridge instead of a minibar that you can freely use.

Actually more and more hotels don’t even stock up their fridges anymore because they don’t make that much money of these anymore. Nobody buys shit from the minibar anymore, not even richgays.

This is true. I used to work front desk at a JW Marriott in the US and each room had a stocked fridge with sensors that would auto-charge your room after 30 seconds. Shit was so flawed though because people would move shit around or take stuff out to put in their own crap so they would get charged anyways. They would always b***h about it and this was very common so we had an internal account where we would transfer the charges there for accounting purposes. Pretty much just created a slew of issues for night audit and accounting

and you withdrew the charges for people who just moved stuff around without consuming it, right?

Sorry yeah. I worded it poorly but we transferred any contested charges to that one account to track and prove to the higher ups how fricking stupid it was

My Ameribro friend almost got charged for an entire fridge worth of food. had to bring management up to his room and show that yes, your fridge is still fully stocked and nothing has been altered. He got the refund but it turns out this all happened because he shut the door a little too hard which made the sensors jiggle.

I've encounter these a few times but at places where I'm just paying by cash as I go, I've not been to america yet though. You're daft if you don't consume every single free thing and leave the place an absolute tip at every single hotel/airbnb you stay at.

I'm trying to parse this myself, and from what I can tell, it sounds like it's frowned upon in Poland to use up every consumable item in a hotel room. My personal views on this aside, it seems like they'll try to recover the costs by getting the police involved. They want to lure you back into the hotel so the police can shake you down for money, I guess.

I did this with coffee when I was 13 and went to Hawaii for the first time. I don’t know why, I didn’t even drink coffee. Eventually they found I was hiding it in my bag and put back the ones I had taken. In retrospect it’s bad to think that they went into my bag, but I also can’t believe my parents never said anything.

Honestly you would be hard pressed to drink enough soda / water in a day to appreciably impact the bottom line. Cheap hotels in Canada are still like $100 a night. I could drink maybe six sodas in a day if I hated myself, that’s less than $10 at retail.

When I used to work in a hotel, one of my job duties was to get a list of all rooms that were checked out and go there to confirm the room was actually empty, so sometimes I would go to a random mini bar and grab myself a can of sprite and some chocolate bar. Nobody ever noticed or said anything. People would always also forget shit that they don't come back for so we had to take it and put it in lost&found but it usually stays there forever. I found a brand new PSP one and took it, waited like 2 months before I opened the box though because I was worried the guests would come back for it but they never did

Contacting guests for lost items is against policy in any good hotel, and from the hotel's side there is almost no situation where it's a good idea. Zero positives and many potential negatives. I've worked in a few high-end hotels and if the guest doesn't call it's assumed he doesn't care or doesn't need it. What happens to the item varies from place to place but usually the person who found it gets the first refusal, if he doesn't want it it's offered to everyone else, and if it's valuable or in high demand it gets auctioned between the staff.

This is something I used to read about well over a decade ago, but I feel it's relevant enough. Apparently pajeet travelers will scam the hotel, and the next guest to stay in the room could be caught in the crossfire.

What I've read is that Indians will drink the bottled water from the minibar, refill it with tap water from the bathroom sink, and shut the cap as tight as they can. If left undetected, you might end up with potentially subpar water, and a serious hygiene issue. I assume they only do this in hotels with unsecured minibars, or ones with time-delayed sensors.

I was in a four seasons in marrakech last month with wife and I fully cleared the mini bar of booze 3 nights in a row and somehow it came to 150$ or something paltry when we checked out. Don't know what happened didn't ask, I thought i was in for at least $400. Had two nips of JW Red, JW Black, GG vodka, plus 2 beers every night on the terrace.
That said, if you don't hit a convenience store for snacks and a few beverages to enjoy in the room youre doing it wrong. I usually buy a bottle of whisky at duty free just so I can have a evening nip or two at a 1/100th the price of mini bar or room service. Makes me feel a little greasy though, since I'm rich and can afford to just drink from the bar.
