What I have learnt:
Don't bother trying to save an extra $20 by 'mixing and matching' airlines when you only have a few hours between the flights. If the earlier flight is delayed and you miss your next flight (more likely than you'd think) the airlines probably won't help you. Mixing and matching airlines is acceptable when you have days between flights.
If the flights you're looking at have unfortunately long layovers (16 hours+), see about staying in the layover destination for a day or two and getting the flight to your real destination later. You do this by booking a return flight to the layover destination and a return flight from the layover destination to the real destination.
Most of the time cheap airlines are perfectly fine and anyone who wants to spend an extra $500+ just to get a shitty meal and see shitty movies through a shitty chair screen for 12 hours is an idiot. Purchase a good phone battery bank, put some games or movies on your phone and enjoy, being a little bored for a few hours is absolutely worth the money saved by flying cheap.
Cheap airlines are known for not refunding your ticket so don't buy the ticket if you aren't sure you will be going unless you're willing to take the risk.

I'm confused, so you're booking 3 tickets at once or something?
You book a flight from A (your point of departure) to B (your destination) and instead of booking your return straight to A you book a return flight to C via A and get off at A.
You should be able to look up and book flights like that as "multi-city flight" or even by selecting A and C as departure airports and picking the right constellation.
Just have your airline pilot dad get you on standby. It's that easy

Pretty standard fares for standby passengers.
Very standard, but sad you don't work for an airline directly that flies to those places. You won't get priority.
Easy, there's a website, you sign in and you get those fares. If you want, I'd be more *than* happy to screenshot some fares so you can see how much profit the airline makes.

Not all long haul flights are expensive now.
North America - Europe is currently pretty cheap.
The reason why Japan is expensive is because they still haven’t recovered 100% of their pre-pandemic flights.
There used to be at the very least 7-9 flights per day from where I am to any Japanese city. Right now there are only barely 4-5. Less flights make tickets more expensive.

what if you are a non-airline pilot?
I use Skyscanner. It gives you the option to make your destination "Everywhere" which is great if you want to go from N. America to Europe with the cheapest starting point. Then it gives you the cheapest budget option on top up to the most expensive.
Currently flights to Hawaii from the US east coast are relatively cheap. But the trip I might be scheduling is in September. Is it better to buy them now or should I wait until later in the year to see if there are cheaper flights available?
