    >ferienwohnungen.de
Unironically googling that area and seeing if it can SEO their way to the top.

Ive had some luck finding places on Airbnb, Googling then and booking direct with the owner. Lots of places put their rates up just for Airbnb

I operate an Airbnb in Europe and I can confirm this. I have Airbnb price and talk to me price. Why? Because I get to skip taxes and you get to skip Airbnb fees. I regularly do this with other Airbnb owners when I travel in my country, just look what's good and hit them up on the phone for a price reduction. Works 99% of the time

Dont you worry about not having the insurance/vetting that Airbnb offers

Actually collecting Airbnb insurance is a nightmare and not even worth trying. I've never had serious damage done to the property anyway, just the usual broken glasses and cups, stolen towels, that kind of stuff. Only time I needed to call them was when someone Costa Rican prostitute gave me one star because she was too stupid to understand directions, bought a train ticket for a city 140km away because there was a street with the same name as mine there, then tried to blame me for it. Airbnb removed the review and banned her kek.

That's funny. I've thought about reaching out to more airbnb hosts for an under-the-table arrangement but assumed they'd be too worried about me trashing the place, but maybe I should be asking around more

The cheapest? You have to do it personally when you arrive. It can be up to 80% cheaper everywhere (if you find some nice people).

You'd be surprised how easy it is to meet these people online. Join Facebook groups for apartments wherever you're going and make a post describing what you're looking for. There's always some local landlord ready to make a quick buck. Prices are usually much cheaper than Airbnb, as others have said.

Even better if you belong to some sort of subgroup. "Italians in Toulouse" for example. Expats like to meet other people from their country of origin. You'll never understand unless you've lived in another country for an extended period how refreshing it is to run into somebody from home. It creates an instant connection between you and another human being. You can leverage that into something useful.

I've gotten amazing leads on short-term housing from FB groups that seemed dead on first glance. These groups exist even for the most niche locations. I'd argue that they deader they are, the better, because other people with your background will be that much more influenced by running into you. And of course, American money is welcome everywhere in the world.

I fricking hate when that happens because it usually confirms why I left in the first place.
        >It creates an instant connection between you and another human being.
        Yeah, positive and negative.
        >You can leverage that into something useful.
That might be the only positive thing.
