Cuba thread

Going to Cuba in a few months. What are the best things to do there? Best places to smoke cigars? Best hotels that arent dodgy as shit?

Main thing I am concerned about is I will be in the USA first, fly to Cuba from Florida and then return to the states after Cuba to continue my travels. Is this legal? Or will I just be extra looked over. Not a US citizen btw.

            can't wait for Cuba though

What are you some moronic white American or just trolling?

Off the top of my head, to even avoid the topic of Cuba did you know that the venal imperialistic US regime forces its colony Puerto Rico to only use the inefficient and expensive American merchant marine to ship goods to their island nation. They are not allowed to arrange shipping on the free market, which raises the price of goods. Have you heard the almost exclusively lily white subset of "freemarketstanis" to ever complain about this? NO! And what does this tell you about these freemarketstanis except hat they are nothing but stooges for America business interests that benefit from such imperialist policies.

To use the example of Cuba: America maintains an embargo against Cuba. Which means that if a ship brings any good into Cuba, within the next six months that same ship is not allowed port entry into any American port, the largest economy in the world.

The USA is a literal c**t country, and Americans only don't know because they are imperialists too busy pretending to not be imperialist. A secondary reason they don't know is because they are too busy pursuing stupid entertainment industry distractions. You can ask the average idiot blue collar American about sports and be amazed at all the useless trivia they accumulated. You ask the weabos on chanboards about stupid anime trivia or vidya games and you would be amazed at the useless nuggest of totally impertinent to anything info they accumulated. But they know nothing about the real world.

Read "How to Hide an Empire: A History of the Greater United States" by Daniel Immerwahr. Or just listen to his podcast interviews promoting the book like I did and you can easily consume his core arguments in much less time while reading the book and get other stuff done(taking walks, walking the dog, laundry, washing dishes, taking showers).

                >According to the U.N., the murder rate is 4.6 per 100,000 people, which is one of the lowest in the Caribbean and South America. We do know that Cuba has relatively few guns, and violent crime is fairly uncommon.

I have Cuba on my bucket list because it is not a stereotypical country because of the Cuban revolution and all their state owned enterprises. But I never got good at Spanish despite living in a majority town for most my life and I figure knowing only English I wouldn't get a good experience. I could only really interact with the Cubans in the tourist industry whose job it is to "receive" foreigners and interact with them. And that is just tourism and not traveling...

Totally legal, no one cares, US citizens can travel to Cuba under the "Support for the Cuba People" exemption. I'm a white American, went in May, zero issues in customs.

I stayed at a Casa. Basically a private apartment with a host family. They can be very helpful as even routine tasks (like getting internet for example) can be overly complicated.

For example take currency. Cuba used to have two currencies but now it's just one. The official bank exchange rate is 25-1 pesos to dollar, but on the street it's easily worth 100-1. People would buy up Euros & CAD the most, but also USD, Yen, Mexico Pesos. Cubans don't trust their currency so there's a large black market for it.

Since I had a host family they could convert the cash without worry of being ripped off in the street (lower rates, maybe even giving you old bills of Cubas defunct second currency).

In Havana, Old Town gets all the hype but Vedado is where you get away from the touts and tourists.

A big highlight was the Fábrica de arte Cubano, an old cigar factory turned into a multi level art space, entertainment venue, and club. Right on the edge before Miramar.

If you have time, Trinidad is another popular town to visit.

I also went recently, specifically July. Also stayed in a Casa Particular in La Vibora. Departed from Miami, arrived in Havana via American Airlines. On the way out, said the script to the customs/border agent ie "I traveled to support the Cuba people. I stayed at a Casa Particular and I did not do commerce with any government or military entity.

Agree with everything in this post.

Also, taxis are pretty cheap, but like always, make sure you establish price ahead of time (and it helps to have your host clarify price too). Also, if you're in a high traffic area, you can wait a couple taxis and take a museum piece of a old Chevy or Ford, pretty awesome. But, I suggest walking if you can, especially through the more residential areas of the city, you'll get to see how locals live.

      A couple other bullet points:
      1. Both bottled water and toilet paper are sometimes hard to find (my host provided both, but not all do)
      2. As far as I can tell there are 3 types of grocery stores:
      - The first is a ratio store, and in general, only ratio books are accepted as "payment". You are not able to "purchase" items from these stores.
      - The second is a general store that accepts pesos. These stores have pretty bad selection, and are a reflection of the command economy that Cuba largely has. I recall tomato sauce, vinegar, orange and lemon extract, and a type of wine basically dominating the entire store. Just vast quantities of like 5 items.
      - The third store is also a general store, but it only appears to foreign currency (specifically dollars or euros). The selection at these stores are similar to what you'd find in a small grocery store in a western country. Hell, even western brands like Tide detergent and Axe body spray were available. Prices are high though. Clearly used to extract foreign currency.
      3. There's not much wiggle room with police. If they ask you do to do something, just do it. Do not attempt to find a middle ground or convince them "it's ok".

Cuba sucks, it has gone completely down the shitter since they got rid of the CUC currency on 1 January 2021, which used to be the money tourists and local exchanged. Lack of tourism due to covid has also not helped.
The entire system has not been able to handle the change and now everyone is poorer and desperate for Canadian or euro dollars which mean you'll be harassed non-stop and they will refuse to take cuban pesos.
Bring a lot of CAD or EURO, otherwise you will literally starve since there's no way to take out money over there.

Only visit cuba if you want to sit your ass on a beach in an all inclusive in Varadero.

Good, there are many places where you can go to be cashless or nearly cashless.
Just leave the more complicated places to people who want to travel to see new things.

Latins are not as docile as Asians. You will run into more scams for sure or people that will just straight up try to rob you. Also you will get wienerblocked by the hotel reception. Filipinos don't care, they'll let you frick their friends/sisters/cousins without a thought. I went to the Philippines and I stayed in the countryside, the brothers slept outside in a wood shack while I banged their 19 year old sister in the house, she didn't even ask for money or anything, I just brought the daily food for the family, verdad. thats what im trying to tell these dudes. cuba isnt the phils, the people are highly educated, frickin A street smart, and not poor/destitute. despite what you may have heard about $20 USD /month avg salary and whatnot, such estimates dont include state subsidies - rent, health care, food, education. and absolutely dont include remittances for those lucky enough to get them.

and for those who look like shit and have no game, a warning: cuba is basically a prison island where dudes have nothing better to do than lift, seduce foreigners, and banter. you're not pulling anything here you couldnt get back home.
