I've gotten an offer to work in Dallas as a software engineer
Partly thinking of taking the plunge because its a lot higher than my current job (90k annual salary vs currently 50k) but I'm a eurofag so would have to move. I know very little about Dallas but figure it could be a fun adventure + if I hate it at least I'm making some good money to fuck off with later.
Am I making a mistake
It's a good city unless you're racist
Just remember summers are hot as fuck (and will only get hotter) and owning a car is practically a requirement. DFW is the best area in Texas, there's no shortage of shit to do, and Austin/San Antonio are 3-4 hours away if you ever get bored.
Be prepared for some giga sprawl tho, which means traffic. Hope your role is hybrid at least.
Dual citizenship? I’d say it’s worth it for the experience, then jump ship to somewhere better with even more pay after a few years.
>DFW is the best area in Texas
HAHAHAHAHAHA
Look at chuckles! What are you laughing about, chuckles? Did you want to type out anything else chucky?
>DFW best area in Texas
are you fucking mental? the metroplex is the worst urban area in the state by far
Houston, Austin and San Antonio are all heaps better
How the fuck is Houston better at all? It has the sprawl of DFW and 200% of the Katrina naggers.
>Austin
>SA
Seriously pipe down you fucking tourist.
Houston has the Gulf so if you like beaches or fishing, Houston stomps it. Also nicer Winter weather.
If you are leaving London or Moscow the money will be worth it. If you are obsessed with walkability, hate heat, hate traffic, and hate yuppies, rednecks, Mexicans, and black Americans, don't don't do it.
50k in Romania might be more than 90k in Dallas.
Is 90k a year a good salary in dallas, or will rent and living expenses eat up most of my profits? Got a pretty comfy arrangement where I live (Stockholm) and am a single autist with inexpensive hobbies; Wouldn't want to leave it behind in case the whole thing is a net loss
You will be 100% fine with that salary and will have enough cash leftover to buy several of your Gundams.
Like the other poster says, you'll probably be fine, but I had no idea Dallas was more expensive than Stockholm.
Some notes...
The four major cultures in the DFW Metroplex are inbred Texneck, city yuppie, ghetto African American, and Mexican American.
The summer is hot as hell.
DFW is known for traffic/commutes.
People tend to be very materialist.
If you have any health issues whatsoever, run the fuck away. If you will be a contractor, you probably won't have health insurance. And you will pay an extra 7% or so in taxes.
Are your hobbies video games, or outdoor ice skating and cross-country skiing?
While driving, are you prone to getting angry at inconsiderate retards who don't use signal lights and don't get out of the passing lane when they're done passing?
Dallas is one of the most souless cities in America. Just sprawl
it's a lot better than 98% of america
Worse than 98% more like
You are out of your mind. Florida, North Carolina, New England, and everything from the Rockies westward smokes DFW. DFW isn't even top 2% of Texas.
It's just sprawl with Mexicans and liberals there's no upside with history or architecture that some cities have
If you want to move to the USA why not or get an in to a country with higher wages. Don't bother otherwise.
If you are from commiefornia or a yankee, you can fuck right off
You're gonna be driving 1hr+ everyday if you want to live somewhere affordable and then commute to Dallas
I see a lot of weird looting videos online of joggers just cleaning out stores in the US - Is this happening in Texas as well, or does the fact people can carry guns deter it
fug, 1hr+ driving every day sounds like a drag. Is rent in central Dallas completely fucked like most big cites these days
part of me kind of wants to be in the US during next year when election goes down just to see the shitstorm
Then again I'm white so I also worry about the risk some black panther dude will just shoot me in the street
Vidya, beer and long-distance running. Hows the nature, any decent trails?
Dallas is mostly sprawl I don't know if they have trails or not. The weather will be brutally hot for running, even at night, in the summer.
You are talking about rent in Central Dallas like it's New York or a Euro city. Maybe there is a young scene downtown but I wouldn't be surprised if it's a ghost town after work and on weekends. Everyone might just drive back to their suburbs.
>Vidya, beer and long-distance running. Hows the nature, any decent trails?
if that's your shit than San Antonio is what you want. They have a massive greenbelt that spans the entire city like close to 100 miles of trails. Lots of people drink and plenty of nerdy folks. Austin is *cooler* with less mexicans and more transplant, techbro yuppies and self important restaurants but its not anymore liveable and in fact probably less so due to the terrible traffic, way higher rents and hoards of homeless. If I had to live in Texas again it would be San Antonio city center.
Protip: your first day in Texas, find a redneck and tell him the following joke:
"Do you know why Texas doesn't slide into the gulf? Because Oklahoma sucks."
You will now have a redneck friend for life.
Is there any big difference in culture between Oklahoma and Texas?
texas isn't half res
the fuck is a res
"Indian" reservation. Lands under Native American tribal local government control. Mind your manners, don't do dumb shit. I've been told it's a different world.
I flew into DFW the other day and spotted at least a dozen high school football stadiums. I'm guessing it's some sort of religion in Texas. Perhaps make friends with locals by asking about it
>software engineer
>50k salary
Jesus christ, never tell me Europeans get "free" anything. I prefer earning $200k and paying for the healthcare I need out of pocket.
Americans pay $12 for a half ass burger that’s slopped together plus a 30% tip. The rest of the world gets a full meal for half that price. And that’s not even getting into America’s absolutely batshit prices for housing these days.
t. someone who escaped america for greener pastures.
Burgers actually cost more in Europe and Japan lol
If you have no family, friends, or pets then yes you should. Otherwise you'll just get homesick.
>50k
>sweden
Is this a joke? You know you can get 90k USD/yr EASY in Denmark, right? You can even continue to live on the Swedish side of the border if you're such a patriot.
Getting your foot in the door in the US job market as a foreigner is never a bad idea (could lead to bigger things). Dallas is a pretty mediocre city.
$90k seems a bit low for a developer in Dallas.
Lots of driving too and from work. You can reduce drive time by paying more rent. Dallas is expensive but 90k is enough to live comfortably. Texas drivers are the worst in the country.
Weather is ass, brutally hot in the summers (only getting worse). Lots of fat people and mexicans.
I'd do it if I were you, 40k pay upgrade is a big deal. If you hate it you can just leave after a couple years.
