Deserting US military(theoretically)

Say theoretically a soldier in the US military wanted to desert. In your opinion including real data and facts where would be the best place to emigrate in Europe to start over, blend in, evade police(possibly become a citizen); when all you had was a US Passport and $5000.

I was just going to clown the theoretical deserter for having such a silly idea (most of Europe does not have its arms open for Americans who want to stay permanently regardless of their AWOL status or lack thereof), but
actually probably makes a good point. The theoretical deserter might be able to apply for asylum in Russia and get accepted, especially if he’s not just some sad-sack private who can’t handle basic training. If he had any useful information to share I think the GRU might like to meet him.

Not sure about nowadays, exactly—they may be on the lookout for potential spies, and might put him through the ringer for a while before helping him out. But I can see it ending well.

Most of Russia is technically in Asia, of course, but it’s more like Europe than it is like Japan.

Just about anywhere else I can think of, definitely-not-OP would probably need a lot more than $5K to make a decent go of it, even out East. But Albania and other Balkan countries have fairly generous visa regimes, and MonteBlack sells Europe’s cheapest passports—popular with deposed heads of state and gangsters from all over the world.

russian's are so paranoid of cia agents they would never let ex-military vagabond in the country. foreigners stick out like a sore thumb and get picked up by the cops all of the time. you have to register with a passport to stay at hotels or rent an apartment as a foreigner, you'd never make it in russia unless you're ethnic and speak the language fluently.

      >Why don't you just resign?
you cant. you are contractually obligated to serve out the time left in your contract. the military process is a months long deal. While a lot of it is hype, you (or at least i was) told repeatedly that
      >YOU ARE SIGNING A CONTRACT. YOU ARE LEGALLY REQUIRED TO PERFORM THE DUTIES LAID OUT IN THE CONTRACT. FAILURE OR REFUSAL TO MEET THIS CONTRACT WILL RESULT IN PENALTIES!
      >now look at all the cool stuff you get to do!
While military life isnt for everyone, those that cant, typically cant handle regular adult life either. In my experience those that cant are the type that want to sleep for 12+ hours, and play vidya all day while being less than productive. They cant understand that during your 20s, 4-6 years aint shit.

if you go AWOL your US accounts will all be locked and you will not have access to modern banking until/unless you can somehow get a fake ID and open up accounts overseas.

You won't be able to use airports since AWOL us military soldiers are reported to interpol and other international security agencies, and if you try your passport will be confiscated and you will be detained first by airport police, then government police who will hold you until US authorities come to pick you up.

Usually AWOL soldiers give themselves up because life becomes too difficult without access to anything if they are in the USA, and also the risk and anxiety having an open warrant for their arrest causes.

If you absolutely wanted to disappear you would need to do so in an armpit of the world and you would need to learn the local language and get yourself a simple labor job asap to keep the cash coming and stay out of the system. You wouldn't want to do it in a big city with a functional security apratus. You are probably better off doing it in eastern europe in some weird place like Georgia or Romania.

Your earning potential will be extremely limited, so you are probably looking at becoming some sort of criminal (you are already if you are AWOL).

You don't need to go AWOL to get out of the military though. You can relatively easily separate from the service just by being a stupid frickup mental case. You want to get out with anything besides a dishonorable discharge, since its basically like being a felon.

Your easiest and safest bet is simply to fail your PT tests until they kick you out. These days its an 'other than honorable', but not a dishonorable discharge.

Lets say you want to get out IMMEDIATELY, today.

walk up to you commanding officer and say these words
        >sir, I feel like I want to kill myself. Can you help me?
he will have MPs or some other guys come and watch you, and then you will be detained and placed in a psych ward under guard and watched for 24-48 hours
you will be relieved of duty status and all responsibilities
you will go through a gamut of tests and interviews, and you just stick to your guns and say you can't get rid of your suicidal thoughts
they will put you on meds, if you are in a facility you might be forced to take them
        it will suck
your life will suck for 1-2 months, but sooner or later somebody will make a decision on what to do with you, and they aren't going to let a suicidal sadsack around military equipment
you will be separated from the military with a medical discharge, or an other than honorable if they can prove you are malingering

going AWOL is stupid, its very stupid, you can frick up your life forever. If you hate the military that much then just defraud it by pretending you are suicidal.

you can't quit before your enlistment is up, if you refuse to do the job then you get sent to military prison until your contract is up, and then you are dishonorably discharged, which is a black mark like a felony for future employment and certain rights

          >loss of job (in the navy, that means you become undesignated and are given to the BMs, a rate already viewed as bottom of the barrel, but as undesignated, you are viewed below the barrel)
          >loss of rank (preparation in case if you get a medical discharge, they wont have to pay you as much if you get out as a E-2 instead of say, and E-4)
          >stuck in a type of "Purgatory" for many months while the DOD reviews your case and determines if they want you out, or if they can use you as a sort of useful idiot for the remainder of your time(doing horrible bullshit-ass jobs that go neglected by everyone else)
          >processed out if cannot be used and given Big Chicken Dinner (if your senior NCO fought hard enough against you), or an other than honorable with a separation code that prohibits you from utilizing VA benefits.

To be fair, there's not really a mature/reasonable avenue for soldiers who realize they're not cut out to be, well, soldiers. In basic I saw *a lot* of guys get pushed through that had no business being in the army. Like if a private says he's suicidal whether he means it or not, when you're barely into white phase, the answer isn't "have his peers frick with him" and if someone isn't even out of basic and they decide they want out, maybe don't have them do b***h work for months in the hopes they'll change their mind.

This is one of many ways the military is, shall we say, dated, and in a strange parallel of corporate America, it cares more about appearances than efficiency.

              >you cant. you are contractually obligated to serve out the time left in your contract.
This is what they tell you, but if you tell your leadership you can't stand military life anymore and need to get out(and don't try to trick them with the suicide bullshit), unless they're pieces of shit they'll sooner or later accept it and see to you getting an early discharge.

I have literally never seen this go well. Then again, I was in 2006-2010, so my intel is dated.

let me guess, blackpilled by /misc/ and or reading actual books? seems easier just to stick it out m8. how many years you got left? take up smoking.

In my experience, this is the correct take; the easiest way out of the military is through it.

It can be hard to reconcile the reality of the military with what you thought it would be. Like I was 11B (could have been anything, but I chose 11B because I was a fricking idiot) and had no clue literally everyone I would serve with would be a skoal-sucking fricktard with the depth of a puddle.

Also, it can be hard to make peace with the epiphany that this country straight up isn't worth dying for, once said epiphany hits you. As a white fricking male I can't imagine how I'd be turning in my grave if I had died for whatever the frick it is we've become. I don't know how anyone who did a tour in the 'stan didn't lose their shit after Biden said LOL WE'RE LEAVING after God knows how many dumb ass kids who just wanted some college money and to see the world died for what turned out to be nothing.

The US withdrew because they knew the war couldn't be won. Every dead insurgent created 5 new ones. Would most servicemen have preferred that it had been drawn out another 20 years so another batch of young men could die in an unwinnable war?

                >If we scorched earth we would have motivated more people to join armed groups to kick us out
Right. Because that's totally what's happening with Russia invading a first world country. Oh wait. Nothing but virtue signaling, condemnations, sanctions that have somehow ended with the ruble being stronger, and supply drops.

But no, you're right. We should definitely leave the drones and the ordnance on the shelf and have dudes cross their fingers and hope they survive pointless, ad nauseum """presence patrols""" for the better part of two decades, then completely shit on the memory and sacrifice of the fallen by allowing a senile, walking fever dream of a puppet president to pull out unceremoniously, hastily, and incompetently.

Nah, I'm good. I still say we should have turned the whole region to glass, dealt with the week long uptick in hashtags and picketing homosexuals before they move on to the next CURRENT THING they're very passionate about.

Like I said, the correct move was never to go over there in the first place, but since we insisted on going, I wish we had taken steps to ensure that the shitstorm ended in a way that didn't involve our personnel being fired on while we were leaving, with zero fear of reprisal, and nothing accomplished except our strength, reputation, and frame significantly compromised, likelihood beyond repair.

We learned from Vietnam. The media can swing elections and end wars, even if the information they spread is completely false. Glassing Arabs wouldn’t have done anything weaken our standing in the Mideast. It’s unfortunate that we fought for nothing, and ya, the withdrawal was a complete failure, but I don’t know how you can say going full hooah and committing a few more war crimes would have done any of our fallen justice or put our nation in any better of a position than it is now.

People who say "the fastest way out of the military is to finish" are liars trying to gaslight you. I joined the Navy last year because I was in a place of abyssal self worth and was unable to find a job despite a college degree. Got a 99 on the ASVAB, signed on as an E3 nuke, they wanted me bad. Got to boot camp, did the calculations on what I was getting paid relative to effort, immediately realized I wasn't a robot and that I was better than that shit and decided to stand up for myself. So when it got time for them to give me my shots I just politely declined. They couldn't process me and they couldn't jail me for refusing medical treatment. They did, however, insult me, lie to me about the separations process, threaten me with a DD and prison time, tell me I'd never find employment, etc. etc. They said I'd be sitting in limbo for months. In reality the separations process took 2 weeks and it was the chillest fricking place on base, we spent all day watching ATLA and reading GoT and eating the same food as everyone else. We called ourselves SEAL Team SEPS. We got to shower as much as we wanted. And I got paid for it. Now I'm out and working a job worth my time, living on my own and breathing free air. No DD, in fact we were all told that not a single one of us would be getting a DD. We all got an "entry level separation" which is basically like never serving at all. Frick the military and anyone who supports it.

That sounds great, but I’ve never seen a transition that smooth in the army. It seems much more stressful, and is a lot more elongated than what you were being told would happen to you. I’ve seen psych-separation people stand in limbo for multiple years, just to get a general or other than honorable discharge, all while being treated like absolute shit in the process. It seems like the Navy and your unit are better at these things than the army and it’s units are.

Its a lot easier if you haven't been in the military long (less than 6 months) They know that a certain percent of people aren't cut out for it and that will manifest itself within that period and they would rather get rid of those people lest they cause further problems.

Actually what I heard while in SEPS was that the navy is actually one of the worse branches for processing people out. It mostly depends on how you go. Going the kms route is not ideal because then they *do* put you in limbo while they try to work out whether they can get sued or not. The military wants to avoid responsibility at all costs, so you want to craft a situation that squarely puts the blame on you but also renders you unusable to them. e.g. medical noncompliance. Another key is to remain as peaceful and passive as possible, pissing people off will only slow you down. But be firm. They will try to "compromise" with you, they'll say "just give it a few more months". This is how they get you past deadlines into zones of no retreat.

I'm in a similar boat as you were anon. I'm joining the air force though. However, I think the navy is a much different experience and the point isn't the pay if you have a decent MOS. The idea is to get some skills, unfrick your shit, and have decent options and the GI Bill/VA home loan when you get out. Definitely not for everyone though.

All true but to get a full dishonorable discharge in the modern military you need to commit a horrible crime (rape, murder, treason, espionage etc). You don't get one for being a dumb kid who goes AWOL or refuses to work unless you do that in the middle of a firefight while your comrades are being killed or something. 9% of US military discharges are less than honorable but only 0.08% are dishonorable. When I was in the Navy I saw people get busted for major felonies (car theft, home invasion, drug dealing etc) and they got kicked out but it was at worst a BCD and sometimes and OTH. If you just stop working worst case scenario they'd write you off as a mentally ill weirdo and OTH you out as quickly as possible. In fact you'll probably just get a general if you haven't been there long. All they care about is slapping that RE-4 code on your paperwork so they never have to worry about you again. No one wants to go through all te paperwork and hassle of a BCD (much less a DD) some depressed kid that just doesn't want to be there. OP shouldn't worry about that.

Major depressive disorder, it makes you undeployable and technically being undeployable makes you unable to be in the military any more so i was medically retired

I really had it and was suicidal because i felt trapped and there was nothing in ttavel distance from my base, im completely fine now that im older and out of the military but like the other anon said it doesnt really matter if youre just pretending since the method will still work to get you medically discharged or retired

Lol no. This is all in theory, and most of it is just not even protocol. In reality, if you don't show up, you get marked AWOL, and that's it. No more paperwork is done.

I have actually deserted the US military. I was in the Army. They're not going to lock your accounts and send interpol after you. That's bullshit. Call these guys and discuss your options with people who actually know what they're talking about: eight seven seven dash four four seven dash four four eight seven / girightshotline dot org

I only know of one place in the world where you can legally immigrate and attain permanent residence with just $5k and a US passport. It's Paraguay.

If you do want to hang out in Europe for a while, Georgia will let you stay there for a year without a visa, and they don't have an extradition treaty with the US. Albania also will let you stay for a year without a visa. They do have an extradition treaty, but I wouldn't worry about it.

Staying someplace as a tourist doesn't give you the right to work there, but if you could find a US remote job, you could support yourself. If you want to stay abroad longer, you best bet will be to find a nice local guy/girl and get married.

Suspending your passport and your bank cards are just a couple of the ways the US government can try to apprehend a deserter (away 30 days or more).

As soon as you try to use the locked card your bank informs them of your location.

Source: meth addict squadron member had it happen to him, and was apprehended at the Mexico border trying to come back into the USA from Tijuana.

    [...]

When was this? I deserted in 2008, and I didn't have any such problems with my banking (I didn't try to go abroad). During outprocessing at the PCF (most chill two weeks I spent in the Army), I met a bunch of guys who had deserted months and years ago and just ended up there after random traffic stops and such. Maybe things have changed since then though.

What kind of discharge did you get?

        Anonymous

OTH in lieu of court martial. It's the same one that all the other guys I outprocessed with got. It's not a DD or a BCD. I can still buy guns. It's not a criminal record or any such thing. It just means I don't get veterans benefits.

The backstory is that I realized during AIT that the Army was a lame frickaround. I also found out that the reason I enlisted was actually not my problem. I talked to my platoon sergeant about an ELS, he said "No", so I just found another job and left. I let people in my unit know that I didn't plan to return. After about six weeks, I was able to verify that I had been dropped from rolls in my unit, so I reported to the PCF at Fort Sill and did two weeks of outprocessing. It should have been one week, but the officer who needed to sign off on the papers at the end was on vacation. I already mentioned that it was super chill-- go to one or two appointments per day, otherwise just hang out on bleachers smoking cigarettes and shooting the shit with the other guys outprocessing. At the end, I got my terminal leave papers, drove home, and my DD-214 arrived a couple months later.

I deserted at the end of 2008 and outprocessed in early 2009. Things may have changed since then, but, based on documentation I see from GI Rights Hotline web page and official Army docs, it looks like this is still the procedure.

          Lemme guess. Wasn't your kid?

          >The backstory is that I realized during AIT that the Army was a lame frickaround
          >I talked to my platoon sergeant about an ELS, he said "No"
See, like you tried to handle it like an adult and I doubt there was any consideration. Did he actually just give you a flat "no" or were there pushups and mindlessly parroted rhetoric involved?

          >so I just found another job and left. I let people in my unit know that I didn't plan to return.
          >so I reported to the PCF at Fort Sill and did two weeks of outprocessing
Wait... so you straight up Craig Tucker'd your way out of the Army? That's fricking amazing.

I learned during my own separation ordeal a very important lesson: power is all about perception.
          >"DO PUSHUPS, SHIT BAG!"
          >"No."
          >"WHAT THE FRICK DO YOU MEAN NO!?"
          >"I mean, I have three inches of height and forty pounds of muscle on you. I give precisely zero fricks about your rank, as I'm not partaking in your LARP anymore. What I'm saying is, you have exactly zero means at your disposal to make me do pushups, and as chest day was yesterday, I'd rather not. So no. Call the MPs, I don't give a frick."
          >*angry Appalachian noises*

          Or...

          >"How are you going to live with your regrets, Anon? How are you going to live with turning your back on your company?"
          >"Well you guys are deploying in a month, and I'll have nothing but time and six figures in savings, so I imagine going full Jody on your wives will be pretty dope. Although in the case of one of you, I don't have to imagine at all, and I'm very much looking forward to the repeat. So is she. We text."

Saying and doing whatever the frick you want in the Army, whilst completely no-selling the bullshit is pretty fricking amazing if the stars align and you're in a position to do so.

Im at 70% right now and southeast asia looks like an absolute fricking goldmine of a place live with these neetbux, im just worried the VA will stop giving me neetbux for depression if they see im living just fine in a foreign country and not needing treatment

5 years after medically retiring they interview you to review if you still need neetbux, then every 2 years after that i think
I still have 3 more years before my first review

              Anonymous

Do you have to do this if you don't medically retire? Like, if you serve your 4 years and go to the doctor for every little thing while you're in.

                Anonymous

If you dont medically retire but want to get some disability percentage for your medical problems you would probably still end up having to meet with the VA periodically to determine if your percentage should be raised, lowered, or kept the same

You aren't in the actual military until you have your first set of qualifications for your job.

Up until that point you are still a disposable moron that might not make it, and the process to get you out is streamlined.

Tons of people dropped out for so many reasons through basic, tech school, and ojt.

The people who I saw get into deep shit for going AWOL were rated and mission critical individuals who were part of a crew and were deployable. Individuals with secret or above clearances, individuals with privileged knowledge and access.
