Did we break some unwritten rule?

>visiting wife's relatives in Croatia
>apartment at the coast
>wife grew up in US and her Croatian isn't very good, so we communicate in broken English
>two of her relatives ask us if we want to join them at the beach
>sure, why not
>we get there, talk for a while
>about to go swimming
>her relatives strip into their bikinis
>lately, wife has gotten into the habit of wearing a rash guard or a T-shirt while swimming due to sensitive skin
>we head towards the sea
>one of wife's relatives gives her a puzzled look
>"aren't you gonna strip?"
>"no haha, i'm good"
>wades into the sea wearing the rashie
>the relative seems troubled by this
>the other girl just gives me a weird look
>shrug it off
>swim and talk for a while
>the relatives become visibly uncomfortable for some reason
>wife brings it up, asks if everything is ok
>one of the girls says it's incredibly weird to see someone swimming in a T-shirt
>wife explains it's not really a T-shirt, tries to explain the concept of a rashie
>her relatives just look at each other and one of them says "oooookay" and smiles awkwardly
>wife and I both perplexed, but laugh it off and change the subject
>fast forward a few days
>having some drinks on the terrace we shared with the relatives
>one of their friends comes by
>relative introduces her to me and the wife
>"ah, you're the one who swims in a T-shirt"
>wife not amused, asks why it's such a big deal
>the girl rolls eyes and changes the subject

Is this a cultural thing? We still have a week of vacation here left, and I'm wondering if we're breaking some sort of weird taboo.

the other women probably felt self-conscious like your wife thought their breasts don't look right & therefore she doesn't wanna show hers, so your wife doing that made them feel "other'd" / they felt ugly

They probably thought wearing a "rashie" (kek) is a WOKE thing that americans do now.

No. More like they thought that by not wearing a bikini like any normal European woman, it meant that ops wife was one of those weird americans that dont identity as a female, and tries to hide her female attributes.

Op is a gay. Ive never seen women heee wear such thing. Maybe muslim women.

        OP here.

Wife was determined to get to the bottom of this, so she touched upon the subject with one of her relatives again over drinks.

I wasn't present, so this is her account of what happened.

        >be wife
        >have drinks with cousin who owns the apartment
        >talk about irrelevant stuff
        >masterfully manipulate her into talking about swimwear
        >ask why wearing tops while swimming is seemingly taboo here
        >cousin seems kinda uncomfortable talking about it
        >gently pressure her
        >"it's okay, i'd just like to know if i'm doing something offensive or wrong"
        >cousin gives in
        >says it's nothing like that, admits that they felt "outclassed" because wife looked really stylish
        >ask her why the smoke and mirrors then
        >she looks ashamed, says she was just stupid and apologizes profoundly
        >accept her apology and move on

The next day, just as we were about to go to the beach:

        >be me
        >waiting for wife and two of her relatives to get a move on
        >lightbulb appears over wife's head
        >"hey, i just realized i have some spare rashies in my luggage, do you guys wanna try them out at the beach?"
        >the girl she went to drinks with accepts, the other refuses, citing "she's fine like this"
        >get to the beach
        >go swimming
        >the cousin who refused a rashie seems kinda sullen
        >wife and other cousin try to stimulate conversation with her but to no avail
        >after a while she snaps and accuses my wife of flaunting her style in front of "peasants"
        >leaves

People can't even get along if one person swims nude, and the other in a shirt...

  7. 2 years ago

I live and like to travel in central Europe and the Balkans, and I wear a rash guard (like picrel) while swimming. I've had a total of one person, staff at a pool, tell me I shouldn't wear a shirt. When I explained that it was made for swimming, he said it was okay.

I think it's different for women in a small group like your wife's situation. Your wife likely made the relatives feel self-conscious. It's like going to a party where everyone is drinking but staying sober yourself. There's nothing wrong with getting drunk, but some people feel shame about it, and being around someone else who is sober reminds them of their shame. I suspect the same dynamic is at play here.

    >Is this a cultural thing?
    Yes.
We still have a week of vacation here left, and I'm wondering if we're breaking some sort of weird taboo. People in long sleeves on a beach are doing watersports and/or muslims.

The US is simply more evolved in true SPF concerns, and lack of desire for tanning or else risk premature aging and skin cancer.
    .
People who wear sun filtering fabrics should have them for long hours in the water, like for jet ski, deepsea fishing where the reflections from teh water aree so brigtht, you know, sports, where reapplying waterproof sunscreen is not just a repeating problem, but also can be like $20/day when you spend all day every day outside swimming or sweating.
Does your wife have brown eyes or a light eye color like blue or green? If the latter, she's 15x more likely to have cataracts and sunburn at an early age.Is she wearingt shades and a hat too, or not? If she's wearing the top for fashion reasons or because she hates sunscreen, just laugh it off and ask one of the ladies to go shopping for something better for tanning. Again, if not real reason other than fashion, and the beac visit like like less than 4hrs, laugh it off.
I am a redhead. I shut up some rude Chinese lady commenting about my white legs in a parking lot, rude as shit, and I said "I don't want to get skin cancer" and she only heard "...skin cancer" and then felt like an ass when she told me to get a tan.

      >I shut up some rude Chinese lady commenting about my white legs in a parking lot
Interesting. Chinese consider pale skin to be a status symbol because you work inside which is seen as more prestigious than working outside in the sun.
Either way, it sucks to have redhead genes. It's like having a disease where you must watch out constantly for your well-being, in this case your sensitive skin.

I saw this pale foreigner swimming in a t-shirt in southern Europe. I assumed that she was protecting her skin from the sun since it was scorching hot. Perhaps those Croatians aren't used to seeing foreigners in their country since almost no can even point out where Croatia is on a map.

I never met anyone who went there. It's always Portugal, Spain, Italy and Greece because let's be honest, if you only have 2 weeks to spare you want to spend it in a culturally interesting country.

          Anonymous

Croatia is often dismissed because people usually mention it in the context of party destinations for degenerates, but there's a ton of nice places to visit and see.

Just to name a few that I'd been to:

Castle Trakošćan - 13th century feudal castle, beautiful scenery (see picture related), also houses a small museum of medieval weapons and armor. Lake surrounding it also has trails where you can feed ducks and shit.

The Monastery of St. Mary - a really small island on a lake on island Mljet, housing a 12th century monastery. Only reachable by boat, but it's pretty awesome, almost like a diorama you can walk on.

Diocletian's Palace - a ~400 A.D. palace built for the Roman emperor Diocletian.

But there's a lot more. Croatia is more than just a fricking drugfest for normies.

I never heard of a "rashie" and so here is my interpretation of what happened.
Wife wore a weird thing and make the group look weird by proxy, they have to live there so swimming with a weirdo and having locals see it is discouraging.
Imagine you go to a poor indian village, they ask you to remove your shoes and walk barefoot. But your delicate little feet that never walked on clay before hurts so you refuse and wear something anyway - this is bizzare and embarasing behaviour that makes you look weak from their perspective.
If one of those women had senstive skin like your wife, they probably would have just swam anyway and sucked up the pain.

the story stretches credulity, but if it's completely true, then simply ditch them because people who get upset over this will deliver 100% more drama if a real controversial subject comes up or even a genuine misunderstanding, which isn't even the case here

      >go to country that underwent a multi-way civil war over religion and ethnicity

Yeah, works fine with trunks. If you're looking to cause seethe though, wear it with a speedo so that it's clear that you're not a prude.

            what's up with the tattoos?

Younger me living in the US thought it would be a good idea to get tattoos that express certain controversial political ideas, because pissing people off and getting into fights is fun. Older me living in Europe now has tattoos that are literally illegal in several countries and just wants to enjoy visits to the strand with the wife and kids without getting into fights. So, I keep the tattoos covered.

I'm polish but we have German family. It happens sometimes that whenever we get together the polish side looks down on the german because they appear to be "extra" or unnecessarily sophisticated. I remember when we had boiled eggs at German senpai's house and we found out that they had TWO of those ridiculous egg-cracking devices in a household of 4. There were many children on the table so there was a bit of a ruckus on the table with all the taking and waiting for the appliance. The Germans insisted on waiting for the appliance and the poles cracked the eggs with a spoon and ate the eggs normally while looking over to eachother with a smirk on their face.
So it might be that your relatives were thinking "These Americans are making things unnecessarily complicated " without understanding the concept fully
