Is this the next variety of bait that'll clog the catalog for the next few weeks?

Akihabara has become really weird and creepy to me IMO. I first went back in the mid-2000's and it was everything a teenage kid dreamed of back then: anime, video games, arcades (including the Sega arcade, which I went to), manga shops, action figure shops, funky back alley tech gadget shops, very few foreigners, it was exactly what it was supposed to be, like a Disneyland for teenage weebs and nerds. So I returned again for the first time a few months ago, nearly 20 years later, as an adult, and it was kind of creepy now, the fun arcades and funky tech gadget stores are completely gone and most the anime/video game stuff, while still there has been morphed and twisted into a quasi-red light district scene with a heavy emphasis on maid cafes. Maid cafe girls now line the streets as far as the eye can see, and the area has definitely transformed around making these maid cafe's the main selling point of the district. The whole area has a really dark and seedy red light district sort of undertone to it now, and the manga shops that largely remain on the streets and back alleys these days just sell really gross hentai stuff that'll make you 180 and walk right back out of the shop. The whole area has become pretty seedy and dark, there's definitely weird and probably borderline criminal stuff going on there behind the scenes IMO, at least that was the vibe that I got from the area. Nowhere near as fun and lighthearted as it used to be if youre just a weeb into typical anime and video games and stuff.

Akihabara has always been full of pervy nerdy shit, Akibaranger had a joke about maid café girls touting on the street and that came out almost 10 years ago.

Quite the opposite, the unique stuff of Akiba is gone and has been replaced by duty free stores catering to Chinese and other shopping tourists.

Heard similar things although not to the extent that you described. It's been a few years since I last visited Japan but my dad was there on a work trip last week. Apparently their sega arcade closed which is pretty sad. Are there still stores full of fumos? Either way I didn't care for the attractions in Tokyo much. Main thing that kept me coming back was the food. Got a lot of good cooking ideas there

Makes sense, you can buy manga and anime anywhere now online. But maid cafes are still relatively niche and have to be experienced in person.

you're an idiot; you just didn't notice these things the first time you went. kids these days have the same experience you did when in akiba. hell, all of the shit you're describing was more prevalent back in the day, not less as you suggested.

Not either but I'm Canadian. From what I know, most of the world loves Canadians and we are the most liked country at the moment. Everytime I introduce myself as Canadian when I'm outside of the nation, they smile at me and want to know Canadians more. Would I be welcomed in Japan?

I live in Japan (expat) and its pretty much how some people explain it.

It's gotten alot more pervy and prostitution is definitely hitting a peak which is very much a post covid effect imo. But Akihrabra is still a great place for hobby electronics which I still go there even for work related parts.
