Do you carry an extra phone for travel? Say for going through police states?

Do you pay for roaming (like a normal person) or do you fumble around with multiple SIM cards like streetshitter because you're so cheap you buy one for voice and one for data?

People don't use iMessage outside of USA and Canada.
European iPhone users will use Whatsapp, iPhones in the former USSR will use Telegram, in Japan, Taiwan and Thailand it's Line, in Korea Kakaotalk, in China Wechat, etc.
People aren't aware of iMessage and the whole "green vs blue bubble" thing because they think it's just plain text messaging due to the seamless integration on iPhones.

I live in one of the richest parts of Europe, use an iPhone, and correspond with dozens of friends locally. I use WhatsApp with 90% of these people (most of whom are high-paid white-collar expats, so a weird subset of the population, but definitely not bottom-tier), including nearly all of those who also have iPhones. It’s damn near ubiquitous. I also have friends in Asia, the States, and Africa who use it.

I think my crowd prefers it in part because it seems easy for people who juggle a lot of international numbers, although in reality it doesn’t make a difference for most which platform you use. My sister-in-law, who lives in the States, does use it to call us, but she’s broke, so it’s a legit cost savings for her over a normal international call.

I am ambivalent about it as a platform, but it’s my most commonly used communication app. Second is Signal, mostly to appease those of my friends who either really hate Zuck or wear tinfoil hats. I only iMessage/normal text on a regular basis with my wife and a small number of people I don’t actually know that well.

It's amazing how little use Whatsapp gets in the US because its a great service. Nobody has heard of it except for people who have family in Mexico, where it's popular, or europe where its also popular. I use it because I talk to people in europe. Telegram also because its popular with gay kinkk communities but the voice calling and video compression on Whatsapp is much better.

my well-off Hong Kong ex would only use apple phones and laptops on principle (we were not compatible), she was using 95% Whatsapp and maybe 5% FB Messenger. I didn't even know iMessage was a thing. You send SMS with a slightly better interface than what my Nokia had 20 years ago, because someone told you that your special bubble color is superior?

Rooting your phone takes like maybe 30 minutes. I run MIUI on my devices but still know I have the ability to run a custom rom should I want to later on. It's a feature for the brand vs. what you could do as an itoddler or samshit.

I don’t and I have never bothered. I have historically paid for data through whatever carrier I was using at the time, although that can be punishingly expensive; in situations where it has felt like an unnecessary expense I have used WiFi wherever possible.

Nowadays I have a plan that includes unlimited data in the countries I visit most often; when I go beyond those borders I just shell out extra.

I don’t spend a lot of time anywhere I would consider a police state, but in the authoritarian countries I have visited I have just sucked up data fees like I do anywhere else. I don’t think I have much to hide, and certainly don’t have anything that would get me arrested, even by the nosiest of secret police.

I carry a burner phone, which is just my older phone. Google Fi doesn't charge me for Data sim's so it works out. Use to rock my old Asus phone for backup purposes and then carry my Xiaomi around for daily driver. Saved my ass a few times where an accident happened and fricked overseas with some shit.

I just keep it in my backpack/luggage most of the time, actually helped me out last month my bag was lost by the airport locate exactly where it was via GPS.

      > Has anyone actually done a wipe and restore after arriving?
Arriving where? More importantly, why? I know at least a hundred extremely well-traveled people. I know a total of one who has experienced authorities trying to mess with his phone, and he’s a swarthy Canadian of partial Lebanese descent with an Arabic-sounding middle name who was landing in Israel. He got a lot of extra personal attention from immigration.
      >I'm terrified that my two factor auth apps will frick up or something and if that happens i will be fricked
Are you more terrified of this, or of some imaginary state bogeyman looking at your browser history? Have to make that calculation yourself, my paranoid friend.
