DON'T Teach English Abroad; You Will Ruin Your Life

I'm a former English teacher in my 30s. I primarily taught in China and somewhat in Vietnam, and all I have to say is: DON'T DO IT!

You will ruin your career and professional life. I went back home a few years ago and I've been trying to pivot into IT, but can't because I'm considered "too old" now.

If you are from a first world Anglo country, there is no reason for you to teach English abroad; it'll only be detrimental to your career. Maybe if you're from some Eastern Euro shithole and it's all you have to make money, go ahead. But Brits, Australians/NZ, Canadians, and Americans should NOT do it. You will get caught up with the easy girls, the easy lifestyle, thinking you're making money and progressing, then you'll hit a roadblock. Then, before you know it, you're 30 years old with nothing to show. You're also essentially teaching Asian people to come to your countries and take all the high paying 6 figure jobs. JUST. DON'T. DO. IT.

Stop looking at gaming/internet bullshit companies that cater to zoomers.

Look at companies that do B2B software like for use in accounting, AP/AR and the like. Not Salesforce. And, the holy grail, look at defense contractors. The culture there skews towards older generations, and from what I've been told, working at Northrop or Lockheed makes you unemployable to FAANG globohomos lol.

homie, you can switch in IT at any point in your career if you have an aptitude for it. (I mean if you can get interviews and not bomb them.) I'm going to assume your problem is getting the interviews. You won't get filtered by HR and recruiters for being too old if you are careful with your resume - remove the date you graduated from university, all your bullshit previous work experience (such as teaching, except maybe one year or so if you have nothing more recent), and keep your new training courses and IT certificates front and center. You'll look like a new graduate applying for entry level positions, which is exactly what you are. Once you get a job you can cruise out of those entry level positions quickly and be doing what you really want to do within a couple of years, maybe less.
The general advice is you should tailor the length of your resume for the seniority of the position you're applying for. You don't list 20 years of experience on your resume for low-mid level positions, not in IT or anywhere. For almost all IT jobs you stick to listing the last 10 years. No point going any further than that, especially for tech roles, but if you are happy about some skills or stuff you did early in your career you can mention them in your cover letter.
It sounds like you need someone to help you with your resume and cover letter. That kind of help is worth paying for. Don't feel shy about reappying to places you've already applied once your resume has a whole new look.

      >homie, you can switch in IT at any point in your career if you have an aptitude for
Completely false, there is a huge age bias in tech.
It is possible to overcome it, but it’s extra hard.

Sorry Zhang but your post is just a LARP. I taught English for a year and it was an amazingly fun time. Before that though I got a degree in Management Information Systems. Once my year was done I jumped into an IT job in the US.

      >too old for IT
lmao I literally just told my 45 year old sister to get an AWS Cloud Practitioner cert and she got an IT help desk job for $60,000 in the Midwest with zero previous experience.
Either you're lying (which you are) or a complete fricking moron.

You're not too old for IT. You too old to be paid to learn.

Young kids fresh out of university corporations hire as junior devs. At this point in your career you actually are terrible at coding and these companies are taking a gamble, an investment, that once you are taught to actually code you will start making the company actual money, and making your salary worth it.

If you want to get into tech as an older adult then you need to teach yourself how to code and be better than any university student at coding. For example, as soon as you are hired you should immediately start making the company money with your skills.

That's it. Be worth your salary. University students are NOT for the first 3 to 6 months.

Also do web development. It's super high in demand and is really the fundamental layer of modern programming. And they say "learn Javascript and you'll never go hungry"

Can you people stop grouping SWE with IT help desk stuff. You say IT and then you talk about programming? I can't tell who is actually talking about literal help desk IT (which is a different career and probably has little to no ageism compared to dev work)

2000 euros a month is 24k a year. 24k euros is basically 24k USD. in America anything below 31k is classified as literally impoverished. i expect the threshold is even higher in europe due to the astronomical cost of living.

The cost of living in most of Europe is far higher than the majority of the US unless you are talking about shitty backwater countries like Poland. Therefore, even 34k a year is probably poverty tier, let alone 24.

2000€ after tax is double what many people earn in southern Europe.

                - pay for a medical insurance
                - pay for your children school and university

I wanted to fund my own travels. The options were to be a lounge singer at hotels every night or a cruise for $2000 a month, or start as an au pair with free lodging, network and get private tutoring and part time language school gigs and make 3~4k a month, and have my own living. And plenty of time to take other classes for fun or improve skills and find higher paid performing jobs. Hell I even got a hotel side job while doing this and was offered a position in the company but ultimately left because it was in China.

The real losers are the people signing contracts for low salaries and your job, housing, and low wage being owned by some petty Asian business owner who looks down on you all because you had no other prospects and wanted an asian gf. Sexpat losers.

I even crunched the numbers using the province and state with the lowest income tax (chose a state with zero income tax even) and on a salary of 78k USD you are taking home about 62k after FICA contributions. in canada your take home pay would be 79k CAD on the same salary which, funnily enough is 62k usd. so literally the exact same.

My popular company in vietnam hires new people in their 50s and 60s. In fact they are wealthy retirees from their previous careers and just want to live out their days doing a little teaching for fun while living in a cool environment. One is a great guy, former lawyer and divorced with adult kids with a lot of great stories. And they have no problem employing and sponsoring the visa.

The problem with age is more with east asian countries than SEA.

I don't doubt that you can cherry pick a school/agency that will hire older teachers. But to state that age discrimination is more of an East Asian problem as opposed to a Southeast Asian one as well is outright fallacious.

the cult of youth has tricked so many otherwise promising people into just giving up and accepting wageslavery

people successfully become airline pilots and doctors despite not even beginning down those tracks until their forties. most successful business owners begin their firms in their mid to late thirties.

ideally you own your house by thirty, but prices skyrocketed the last few years and now rates are so high you'd be an idiot to take them. so bad timing on that. but either way, don't believe this meme because its purposefully spread by the media to get you to give up.

The engineering job simply existing is nothing special. What does it pay now and in 10 years? The answer to that for gayMAN-level leetcode ability is ~200k now and ~450k at full senior level.

At the end of the day there’s only one or two 30+ year olds out of hundreds of students in these rigorous programs that are the only way to you good money without doing something entrepreneurial. There’s a reason why community college is full of 30+ year olds, it’s because they know their math/memorization/critical thinking capabilities have severely declined but at least community college offers a better outcome than their current situation

I'm mid 30s and just now learning to code. Frick what anyone says. Will I financially surpass crypto zoomers who started programming in their teens? Probably not. Are there countless people in my age group who made better decisions about their life early on that led them to success? For sure. Will dwelling on any of that serve any other purpose than to put up mental barricades that handicap me before I even get started? No. Will it assist me in my goals? Frick no.

The timeless skills that make your life enjoyable and worth living aren't coding, business or tech related. They are problem solving and strategic ways to approach obstacles whether internal or external. That's all you need. If you don't have them then believe me - you would still be in a depressive unmotivated defeatist state regardless of whether you spent a decade teaching in Asia or a decade building future-proof tech skills. You don't have to be better than anyone else - just be better than the person you were yesterday.

Now get off SighSee and back to work.

who wants to actually collect an easy 100k a year without uni and shit....i'll happily give u the guide

dumb cucks here dont even realise their are WFH gigs where you literally send 4-5 emails a day and collect 70k a year.....

    righto c**t, cap this
    >> 1-go to linkedin (seek and co. are trash) , search contract admin or something generic

    >> 2-click on a few different cucks roasties profile with that title, rip their job descriptions and add this to a resume file with your name

    >> 3-now go look for companies that have gone bankrupt in the last few years, congrats now u worked for them for 2-4 years each

now spam this fake resume around to generic applicaitons on linkedin

you WILL get interviews, to pass this just recite stories from your fake resume and tell them you want WFH and a 90k to move

eventually you get an offer, do the bare minimum, get booted after a few months and rinse and repeat

    beats neetbux by a mile

I don't doubt that you can cherry pick a school/agency that will hire older teachers. But to state that age discrimination is more of an East Asian problem as opposed to a Southeast Asian one as well is outright fallacious.

Literally the first job offer that came up. It took me all of two seconds to find. Ageism is alive and well in Southeast Asia.

My plan, get the money and visa to relocate to somewhere to teach english (sponsored by the company) after a while scam my way into a remote wfh job like anon says, save some money and then aqcuire an actual skill so I can contribute eventually.

My guess is you are applying at the wrong kind of companies. There is an artificial premium paced around big name companies, which actually for the most part take you for a ride and provide you no benefit and provide a lot of pressure just for the label.

Also, the kind of role you should be looking at is sales. It is the most forgiving in terms of entry, while being ruthless in terms of long term employability because you are targeted on metrics. If you are good enough at listening to people and not a total sperg you'll make money in this, speaking as a formal (nearly went TEFL) teacher who was sick of the shit money.

I applied to a shitty boiler room job and changed position every 2 years, upgrading salary as I went. I eventually worked at a Swiss bank and became top of the leaderboard and got poached by a headhunter in tech.

I started when I was 26 and it is a LOT easier when you're younger because you don't have the fear of rejection or hard graft as much as when you pass 30.

I know plenty of people who did ESL and did fine out of it, including me.
I also know people who got trapped in Asia raising half breed kids with no skills and no way out.
The way that you end up in the first category is you have to do more than just be an ESL gay. The easiest is to transition in to bring a real teacher.
But you're best off learning the local language and getting in with a local business scene. I know ESL gays who turned in to journalists, factory managers and guys running their own businesses among other things.
The problem is that outside of teaching, you may find your expertise is related to the country you know and know the language of, making the transition home difficult - you're more useful out there.
So if you think the locals are dickheads (*cough, China, cough*) then maybe best to plan your exit asap.
Also even if you get to go back and line up a job, the nature of the expat lifestyle means that you may seem like a crazy out of touch alcoholic weirdo when you return.
I talk to ex expat friends about the beating we all took returning home and starting up in the world of work in the West. Very very different.
I also know a few guys who came back feeling like they were capable and flexible only to return overseas with their tails between their legs within the first year. This isn't just teachers by the way, I know a corporate lawyer guy who did that.
It's a great adventure for a year or two after university. Anything more than that and you need a plan. If you have no plan, time to go home and take your licks and figure it out.

Good advice. The transition back is tough, but if you put it off with no plan, it's going to be brutal.

Dumbest post ITT. A 20 something moron too big for his britches wrote this post. The cost of training a 20 year old and a 30 year old with the same education/skillset are the same. You are not even considering the fact that young people are much less reliable and are constantly looking to move up and therefore more likely to move out, where an older candidate is much more interested in long term stability which means he is more likely to remain with the company for longer and earn them much more over the course of his career.

I was once a T/L6-7 (6 doing 7 work weeeeee) and you are wrong.

Fresh grads are useless, and I'm field they continue to be useless for min 10 months. My team required 16 months of training before we'd let them commit anything with normal review process.

They are not dumb kids. It's just the nature of the work that need the new hires to learn and adjust.

        Anonymous

Not the guy you're replying to but you're wrong and you're being unnecessarily rude about it (usually evidence that it's you who doesn't know what he's talking about).
There are lots of disadvantages to trying to start a professional career in your 30s or even late 20s. And one that hasn't been mentioned yet is that companies - especially the big ones that provide a lot of the graduate training schemes - are much more keen on young people in their early 20s they can mould the way they want than grown men with some life experience and their own ideas about how to do things.
If they're going to invest in training you, they want young people and while there are exceptions to the rule, it is just a massive cope to pretend you are not at a major disadvantage trying to get in to a career as a 30 year old, especially a 30 year old whose background says "slacker who didn't push himself for the last decade".

OP you're not without hope, but you've got some ground to make up.

          Anonymous

          wrong
the only young people they hire and train are either H1B visas replacing their higher paid workers or women/non-whites for diversity quotas.
That is the real reason a white person in 30s wont get a job there.
          Don't beat yourself up OP.

Yeah they only want poos and diversities, so you're saying you won't get hired and trained at 20 or 30.

I'm literally a recruitment officer. A tremendous amount of highly skilled people are entering the work force much later. 40 or 50 puts you at a major disadvantage. 30 is literally nothing, and many highly skilled people don't even finish their education until around this age.

I have no idea how you can enter the work force and be highly skilled. Surely if you were out of the work force you don't have relevant skills?
And you're not contradicting me either because "ESL boozer for ten years" will not read as highly skilled.

It's fricking tough out there and there's no point pretending it's not.

I already saved up $800k from my career. Just about to turn 30 and THEN I will go teach Enlgish.

The non-life ruining ways to do it are a year or two after undergrad, before gettint into your proper career/grad school or after saving up a pile

There are a small # of exceptions that can break the mold. e.g. teach a couple years then make a local business. You'll know if you're the exception.

Anon, how the frick have you managed to save $800k in the space of 7-8 years assuming you graduated from college at 22 in addition to a student loan.

I have moved positions and saved like 95% of my salary on a literal top 1% salary and at 27 have $315k equivalent. Is this a larp or did you strike big from crypto.

When I returned to the UK I didn't have any money saved up I'd blown it all on backpacking around SE Asia. I started a masters degree but dropped out after 2 months as the course was very demanding and I was not on track to pass. I had taken out a government sponsoered loan and also got a loan from my father and was now in debt. I then spent 6 months looking for a graduate job. I probably applied for about 100 jobs and had about 6 face to face interviews before landing my first job as junior consultant. I was age 27 and on £25k at my first. After 4 years at that company I left to work a contractor which is when I started making good money. I've been doing that for the last few years and paid of all my debt a while ago.

Don't you ever miss Asia and the adventures? I can't wait to leave the UK, it's such a complete an utter shithole.

This. OPs main problem is he is projecting all of his failures onto a decision to work in China because it's easy to blame anything but your own self when really the problem lies entirely within you. Deep down OP is unmotivated and therefore, on the surface at least, extremely incapable.

Besides, you're supposed to be doing what you want in life. If OP had truly desired to go to China he wouldn't regret his decision at all. And if he had fulfilled his true desires then he would be happier, more motivated, and therefore more successful. All he wants is a pity party.

SighSee and former government leech here, get a job in the federal government. They're DESPERATE for IT talent because they pay much less in salary, but you'll definitely make it up in benefits, and they don't give a shit about your age.

Do that, get a security clearance to do IT in the SCIFs and secret spaces, then go be a contractor (big salaries) or work for Amazon or Microsoft in their classified datacenters. Shouldn't take you more than 5 years to rehabilitate your IT career and it'll be comfy while you do it (5 years is only because of how long the background checks take).
