europe's 8kg limit

I am planning to do a trip to Europe this summer, but I am not a frequent flyer.
Do they actually weigh your carry on bag in Europe? My bag fits easily, but it weighs 24lbs or 11kg.
If they weigh it and its above their 8kg limit, can I just take out stuff and put it in a smaller (also fitting) personal item bag right then and there? I would put that bag in my carry on.
Can I put that personal item bag back into my carry on afterwards?

Sorry this sounds like im a moronic tourist, but I have no clue what would happen, I have never had problems here. Thank you SighSee I absolutely want to avoid checking anything.

Can't speak for Europe, but in North America, there are factors like the type of airline you're flying (if they're a ULCC), and the airplane you're flying on (where the plane may need to be balanced)

Worst thing, you can carry your hormones for transitioning and then place them into your luggage after boarding.

This usually happens with low-cost airlines that actually make money from this. I doubt it would ever happen with a major airline like British Airways or Air France, but it definitely can happen with Ryanair or easyJet.

      >air france

They do check in CDG terminal 2F, as 2F exclusively operates Air France flights and nothing else. They will pick people with luggage and make them weigh it. That’s before security.
They SOMETIMES do it in terminals that exclusively operates one single airline company. They have a dedicated wagie doing it before security so time isn’t wasted for other wagies.

They "randomly" check everybody in VIE although you can just walk past the wagie trying to direct you to the scale, he cannot do anything once you've passed the ticket barrier.

Typically the rule of thumb is that no one is going to bother you if you just have everything in a backpack. They usually only make a fuss about huge rolling bags that people can't even lift into the overhead bins.

That being said, what the frick do you need 24lbs of?? Are you traveling for months? Are you taking your own food?? My guess is that you could seriously downsize your pack and save yourself a lot of trouble. Even carrying an extra 24lbs on your back all day can be exhausting.

I am a camera geargay. 24lbs is with that gear and everything else I need for travel. I wont be having 24lbs on me at all time, but I could easily carry it if needed. My backpack is very comfortable. Thanks for your input btw, I hope I slip past with just one backpack.

so if my backpack is over the limit, can I just take out 3kgs, put it in a foldable bag and say thats my personal item? Seems kind of moronic since I would put it right back in afterwards anyway.

It is but rules are rules and the average airport wagie isn't paid enough to care.

The ultra LCCs that might actually weigh your bag (incidentally, I fly with EasyJet frequently and I’ve never seen them do it) sometimes don’t give you one carry on plus a “personal item”—it’s supposed to be one object in the cabin with you, period. Easyjet charges more to let you use an overhead bin, and that might actually be their official policy too, but they’re not all that fussy with details that I’ve noticed. People bring in a carryon plus food, etc. all the time.

The only carrier I can remember who actually weighed my carryon doesn’t even exist anymore, I don’t think—Airberlin?

I’ve flown easyJet several hundred times over the years (decades!) and I’ve had cabin baggage weighed exactly once. There were a lot of people trying to take ten litres of spirits on board which I think is why they were being strict.

Like the other anon I travel with a lot if camera gear and i stick to the limits. It’s very unlikely it’ll be a problem but there is no way I’m putting my gear in the hold.

Just use a laundromat (I did read cameragay tho. I do photography and usually my shit is only 10 lbs max and the tripod collapses)

I used to work for the biggest ulcc in Europe, sometimes they can be strict with the sizing but I never saw them caring about the weight.

Backpack is a great tip, I've been working as a check-in agent at an airport for 5 years and I never checked the weight of a backpack in my life. Keep in mind airlines that operate from their hub generally have much lower standards than foreign airlines as the sheer volume of flights makes it much more difficult to keep track of statistics. Back when I was working on Aegean in Warsaw we had a frickload of targets to meet, specific quotas of cabin baggages we had to check in but whenever I observed a flight arriving from Athens I've never seen a single cabin baggage tag or any other sticker

I only wear merino wool when traveling and handwash it in a shower. I take one spare of each and 2 spares for underwear/socks.
How do you get all your travel gear + camera gear to only 10lbs, especially with a tripod?

I have yet to had my bag weighed as i normally check a bag. Carry ons will usually only be 5-10 Euros cheaper than a checked bag on Eurowings and Ryanair. I have been on crowded ryan air flights (to the UK from Europe) where they force you to check your carry on unless you"ve paid for their priority boarding...

I was in europe last november, and took 11 flights, some low cost carriers (Vueling, Ryanair and Easyjet) and some traditional carriers (AF, Iberia, Finnair), the only one that had a 8kg bag limit was Finnair and in no flights our bags were weighted, but like the other anons said, if it fits it it can probably fly, they don't care that much about weight unless your bag is incredibly large and you struggle to carry it, otherwise they will assume your bag is ok to fly
Also, not all airports have scales, only saw them in Barcelona, Venice and Milano
Regarding your other questions, if the weight is negligible they will let you go through, otherwise yeah, you can shuffle some stuff to other bags, the weight limit in carry-on is less about the fuel cost and more about the overhead bin maximun supported weight
Also yes, you can put that personal item inside your bag in the way to the plane, no one is going to stop you unless like i said, your bag looks massive with it and you struggle to get it to the overhead bin

TAP charged me $125 for my backpack and duffle being overweight going from Lisbon to IAD, but when I flew out to Lisbon they didn't weigh it. Convinced Chase to withhold the payment, frick em.

I've never had my carry on get measured for weight despite flying over dozen times with Ryanair and a few times with EasyJet and also once with WizzAir. I don't think I've seen anyone get measured either. Bring a bag that visually looks like it more or less fits in the upper limit of the carry-on dimensions and you will be fine. In the worst case situation where they measure the weight, just pay the extra fee. It's unlikely anyways. Case solved. Now focus on other stuff.
