They lost my bag for a week and I had to buy things...I don't think its an unreasonable expectation

Haha....This summer lufthansa lost my bag and they literally didn"t give a flying shit. After like 2 months I gave up

easyjet cancelled 3 flights on me in 4 days this summer with frick all help except telling me to "sort it all out yourself according to all of these terms and conditions you don't know about and we will refund you". They refunded the hotels I booked near to the airports and some (not even all..) of the extra train journeys I had to make, but really I fricking gave up too. The magical weather which only managed to cancel my first 2 flights but no others is apparently not worthy of compensation (the 3rd was very much not their fault but I obviously didn't fricking care at this point we are talking about a 3rd fricking flight cancellation in 4 days to make the same trip). It's just to depressing to chase up all the time or even think about. They put you in hours long phone queues and probably fricking laugh at you the whole time and then spend hours arguing you round in circles to catch you out on dumb shit

            For me it was different
            >arrive to munich, luggage is nowhere
            >great, first time for everything, leave a complain, thank god I am always cautious and put some clothes in my backpack if this happens
            >get a call in two days my luggage is at the munich airport
            >wait there for two hours, I start to complain like a b***h karen, they tell me that my luggage is in Canada (??) and they will notfiy me when they have it
            >1 week and the holiday in munich passes by, go home
            >call the lufthansa hotline
            >I am on hold for 1 hour, give up
            >call lufthansa hotline again
            >same
            >next day finally somebody accepts my call
            >they tell me that they need a description about my bag, and some proof with a receipt that those things belong to me
            >I literally had nothing there just some clothes, how the frick should I provide a receipt
            >"allright sir we will try to find your luggage anyway"
            >call them 1 week later
            >on hold give up
            >call them again, same thing happens
            meh

All my claims were eventually reimbursed, but it can sometimes take months for them to respond.

Call and ask, reimbursement is the lowest of the low on their list of priorities. You have to call and ask/poke them in order to get them to do anything. They are often hoping you forget about it and stop

This, they're legally obliged to refund you but the law doesn't forbid them from employing stall tactics to make you give up and forget so they can pocket the few hundred bucks you're owed. There's an entire industry around legal types doing these reminders in your stead for a cut of your entitled compensation.

they don’t have a phone number for complaints but i filed a complaint with the DOT already

You call their customer service line and check on the status of the reimbursement. Why the frick would you file a complaint, get someone on the phone who can follow up on your ticket #.

You are literally falling for the trap where after X days they won't need to process claims as too much time has passed.

every time i call customer support its just some indian guy that says the claim status is that it is being reviewed and he can't give anymore detail because its not his department

Not him, but one time after I filled a complaint against United with the DOT, and got a refund within a week after the airline telling me they wouldn't refund me after a canceled flight for a month.

Ombodsman and small claims are your friend. Amazing how much more active they become when you start taking the regulator/legal route. Lots of great stories of bailiffs turning up at airline offices and scaring the shit out of the managers

If your flight was to/from an EU country you can also file a claim through the EU small claims process:

i booked a flight on Swiss earlier this year
i had to change the return date so i called to confirm the change and they said it was all ok
but they hadn't actually changed the booking so the original date was still in the system. of course the flight left without me and they wanted me to make a whole new booking for the new date
i complained but they basically said i was lying and there was no evidence i had ever changed the booking
airlines all have shitty customer service. every single fricking time i have ever had a problem with a flight they have fricked up somewhere. bastards.

Ask for written correspondence every time. If you call someone tell them to send EXACTLY WHAT THEY SAID in an email, then respond with corrections or say you agree. This comes from meetings where I've had people tell me one thing then do another and lie outright when I have called them out on it. Always get correspondence confirmed in writing. Spoken words aren't worth the paper they're written on.
