Flying from Germany to try the food in either Buffalo, NY or Cincinnati, OH

How do these cities compare when it comes to overall food scene, and is one nicer than the other?

buffalo has deep fried chicken wings with hot sauce
cincinnati has chilli on top of spaghetti

this would be like an american flying to krefeld for a kebab
there must be some american style restaurants around their military bases in germany

There actually are, internet coverage is dogshit though. Took me months to realize Kaiserslautern offers chicago deep dish pizza and a restaurant offering birria tacos with consomee to dip in opens up soon.
That's it though the rest are 10 copycat wings tossed in funny x flavor sauce surrounding off-base Ramstein.

I wanted to hit that area again(400km ride) and would appreciate some american food you can't get anywhere else in Germany like the 2 above.
Someone's relatives living there knowing some off-base place to get cincinnati chili?

Yeah such and awful idea. Skyline chili is gross. Anchor Bar is overpriced and nothing special and you can get better wings all over the country. Go to the Detroit area near those for Detroit style pizza. And visit King’s Island and Cedar Point

I don’t know it could be fun depending on what he’s looking for. It won’t be New York City but it will certainly be authentic. Eating a hot dog in a rust belt shithole is peak Americana.

They are not low key fire. I’d rather go to almost literally any other city in the country. I’d rather go to Salisbury Maryland than fricking Cincinnati
Brother just book a trip to NYC and get all the best food you want. Ironically, there is almost certainly a restaurant in NYC that does Cincinnati’s stupid ass chili better than literally every single cinci restaurant in their entire city. There’s probably 2-3 actually, in NYC, that BTFOs the best places in Cinci

Cincinnati chili with the spaghetti is gross, definitely not worth traveling for. But the city is kinda cool in a grungy post-coal-town way and there's good craft beer and coffee. I haven't been to Buffalo but I wouldn't say that wings are worth traveling for either. Why not try ribs in Kansas City or cheese curds/beer in Wisconsin or sub sandwiches in Philadephia?

Buffalo has a few unique things that haven't really been exported like wings had. (and the wings in Buffalo are different from anywhere else).

    buffalo foods:
Beef on Weck (a roast beef sandwich with horseradish on a special salted Kummelweck roll served with Au Jus)
Loganberry drink (a unique sweet non-carbonated fruit drink beverage made from loganberries)
Sponge candy (a chocolate coating covering an airy light toffee)
Chicken marinated in Chiavetta's (a vinegar based barbecue sauce used to marinate chicken before rotisserie roasting it)

I hadn’t really even considered Buffalo as a place to visit until the last couple days. It looks great. How does it compare to Rochester, Cincinnati, and maybe even Grand Rapids?

not sure, just know Buffalo cause I grew up there. Buffalo metro area also includes Niagara Falls. Now when I grew up you didn't need a passport to cross to the canadian side, just spend about 15 minutes answering a couple questions at customs, and a lot of the cool attractions including the Horseshoe Falls and the Skylon Tower are on the Canadian side, you still have the Maid of the Mist boats on the American side.

I wonder if I’m ever going to be able to go to Toronto as a nearby city without having the vaxx. That would be a huge bonus to living in Buffalo that I would hate to miss out on.

They're both cities with almost no economy left behind after their primary industries abandoned them. Cinci is filled with blacks and crime and Buffalo is isolated and lacking anything of value. There is no reason to go to either of them. What are you traveling to the US for? What do you want to see?

Cincinnati has 7 Fortune 500 companies and Buffalo is on a Great Lake and right next to another Great Lake and has niagara fall. You don’t know anything lol

Airline pilot here. I hate your city. Cincinnati has one of the highest violent crime rates in the US. A lot of travel writers and food critics rank Skyline Chili as the worst regional dish in the entire country. Having stayed there many times, I find it nearly impossible to get a good meal. There no National Parks anywhere nearby the visit. It's not a cheap airport to fly into as it is not a major hub and there is only one direct international flight that I'm aware of from France. If you wanted to visit a crime-ridden city in the middle of the US, at least Chicago has good food and some world-class museums and attractions. Why not go to Chicago?

              Anonymous

Cincinnati feels like a southern shithole city to me rather than a midwest/rust belt one. Think Atlanta or Memphis. I mean the airport is actually in Kentucky.

Guessing OP is going on some kind of atrocity tourism thing involving the rust belt. Ohio is just devoid of anything good. There's nothing notable in a culinary sense because people move away more than they come. The general lack of ethnic diversity also means things tend to be extremely bland and unhealthy.

Think of it as something like the Ruhr area but with the economy and culture of the former DDR parts of Germany.

Buffalo at least is in New York so there's Italian (American) food which is pretty good. And probably Greek owned diners. Those are good. The usual New York stuff. I'd go there. Aside from the falls you can visit lovely sites such as Love Canal where they buried PCBs and poisoned a whole neighborhood.

Go to Pennsylvania, from Pittsburgh to Erie, then to New York. If you're willing to go anywhere in the United States for food, however, then go to Louisiana. Best food in the states. Pennsylvania is bad in a lot of ways but the food in western PA is great. At least considering the alternatives in the red zone in your picture.

Am from Cincinnati, cannot recommend going to the US just to visit Cincinnati. It is nice to visit for a couple days, I can understand why some people like visiting as a stop on a longer trip. The buildings downtown are nice. It's hilly and several places have nice views. There is a lot of craft beer if you're into that. If you do tourist things for a couple days you'll probably enjoy the city, anything more you'll be bored.
There are bad parts but it's not a crime ridden shithole like the other anon said. Like the other anon I do highly recommend Chicago over Cincinnati having lived in both places. Why would you spend the money just to visit a place with so little to see? Cincinnati can be a nice stop on a longer trip but really it is boring.
There are a few delicious restaurants but most restaurants range from decent to not good. Avoid anything Mexican that is not from a food truck. Avoid anything Asian. I don't especially recommend the two regional dishes, Cincinnati Chili and goetta, but I personally find them decent, maybe because of nostalgia. Local chains I've had success with. I recommend deep dish pizza from a place called mio's and a quarter dark with the spiciest sauce you can handle from a fried chicken place called Joella's, though it looks like Joella's closed their downtown location.

Mexican and Asian are my two favorite non-American genres of food.

I recommend Chicago even more then. For almost everything, especially Mexican or anything Asian, you can find much better food there than in Cincinnati.
You can find decent Mexican in Cincinnati just get it from a taco truck not a restaurant. I recommended trying tortas over tacos or burritos at taco trucks.
