Shut the frick up mutt. I've studied and followed the jp thread to the letter, I know hundreds of kanji, can speak 1000's of japanese words, I don't even need subs for anime or translations for manga.

This board is completely full of shit just like the people who visit and are mouth breathers.

No, they think you're a dumb white gaijin because that's all you'll ever be to them. You speak Japanese? Cool, you're a dumb monkey who can do tricks. They can't talk shit to your dumb monkey face so they wait until you leave the room. Unless you get some eye surgery there is NOTHING you can do to integrate into their society, you will ALWAYS be a Black person and all you are with your language and etiquette is an uncle Tom. The country is 98.5% Japanese and 99.6% Asian and they are very happy this way. You, as a Japanese speaker, are nothing more than a curiousity. Your mannerisms, etiquette and cultural practices is nothing but coonery. A dumb white monkey aping the locals like bobo the chimpanzee. Maybe get a job as an elevator operator or find another white Japanese speaking coon and start your minstrel show?

Picrel is how you look to them. Congrats on wasting two years of your life, I learned the ukulele during lockdown.

So when you speak proper japanese to people they immediately look at you as a white gaijin and herd you in with the rest of the sheeple. I don't think you realize how many modern Japanese people hate themselves, their culture, and especially their backwards dying language. It's embarrassing to them when you speak Japanese because they would rather be speaking English but they're too dumb to learn it properly, so you get this weird muddied area. Go to any video comment section online with non-Japanese people speaking the language and you will find many Japanese comments about how they are wasting their time learning the language and should find something better to do with their time.

That's because it IS a waste of time. Unless you plan on moving to Japan (maybe take the hint that they don't want you to do this) or you have some business that requires you to communicate with japanese speakers on a regular basis, you have no reason to go through the effort of learning japanese as a foreigner. It's not some global language, it's spoken in exactly 1 (one) country and that country has a history of isolationism, genetic homogeneity, and is going through a population crisis. Japanese people see some white guy speaking japanese and understand that he's almost certainly speaking it because he watches anime and jerks off to 2D little girls, and not because he plans to do anything productive with his ability to speak their language. They're embarrassed for you.

There are many Japanese who are close minded of course, but yours is a gross generalization: people generally appreciate it when you go out of your way to learn your way to learn their culture.
On top of that, the Japanese have always had an appreciation for western culture, so I think it is wrong to think that they consider us barbarians a priori.

I really suggest you consider changing your worldview. If you haven't already, you will soon start applying it to other groups of people and you will be miserable.

This should be printed on every passport in the world and have the language tweaked to be less specific as to apply to everyone from every nation because this is really true everywhere. Foreign tourists are welcome for maybe a week or two because you're there to spend money, take in the sights, and leave, after that your presence just starts to become a nuisance as you unavoidably start trying to inject your culture into your surroundings to make yourself more comfortable.

Not really. They know you're probably American. They don't have many occasions to speak English with a proper one, and would rather take the opportunity to practice a little. I've seen this happen in every single country i've been to. Whenever people see Americans or just anglos in general, they try to speak as much english as they can.
            > I have no problem tlaking with others on the jp threads or reading their advice.

Why do you keep repeating and insisting that your japanese is fine ? Nobody denied that so far.

Next time you make a thread where you larp as a weeb to get answers, try to be a little more subtle by not constantly repeating and being on the defensive on points you haven't even been challenged on.

They know that foreigners usually don't speak Polish. They know that most foreigners speak English, no matter where they are from.
      >Why won’t they just let me practice my polish?
Most people will gladly let you practice, provided that they have time. You can't expect somebody to be your practice partner if they have countless other customers to serve.
      >I didn’t come all the way here to speak fricking English

It’s still rude to reply in English when someone speaks to you in Polish/Japanese/local language. The world has more people who don’t speak English than people who do. They could at least ask “do you speak English”? first.

The other day I was at the post office. The lady could tell I wasn’t Polish, so she asked me (in Polish) which language I would prefer. That’s the way to do it.

        > They know that foreigners usually don't speak Polish. They know that most foreigners speak English, no matter where they are from.
        Lol, this.

I’m American but live in India. I spent three and a half years taking formal Hindi courses in undergrad and grad school (yeah, frick off). Many people will speak to me in English because so few foreigners understand any Hindi, let alone any regional languages.

When I speak in Hindi, most people will immediately switch to Hindi, even if it isn’t their native language (e.g., I live in a non-Hindi-speaking state, but almost everybody speaks Hindi. It’s basically a go-to language when one or both people can’t speak English). Nowadays, I actually have a lot of people approaching me in Hindi, which I can’t entirely explain. Somehow these frickers can just tell that I understand them or something.

In the past, when my Hindi was very, very limited, people would treat me like I’d just done a magic trick—they’d get all excited and giddy, and then switch right back to English.

So, IMO, I wouldn’t be surprised if some of you don’t have quite the grasp on the language as you think that you do. If you’re still struggling with basic grammar or sentence constructs, I don’t think it’s outside the realm of possibility that locals will think you’re trying to make things easier for them but would really prefer speaking in English.

(NGL, I think it’s also about how you carry yourself, how you dress, and how you express your basic mannerisms)

Something that sometimes works when the other person wants to practice English: tell them that they can speak in English, and you’ll speak in their language. You can help correct each other when the other person makes mistakes. I do that in India all the time. A lot of young, rural people really, really want to learn English, so it’s a good way to keep getting practice while giving them what they want.

Speaking English rather than the local langauge is incredibly based, and is the Chad boomer way.

Millennial and zoomcels that pathetically try to go native by learning the dark tongues and still don’t get any pussy for their efforts are foreshadowing the fall of the West.

Truth is, even the native prefers it that way even if he would never say so, he doesn't want you intruding in and meddling in his affairs. You live in your world, he lives in his, and both are happier and better off for it.

I've lived in Japan for 2 years and it's still pretty much a random process. Sometimes they just unload Japanese at me at native speed, sometimes they will insist on speaking broken English even if I respond in Japanese. 90% of service staff here (and probably the general population too) are actual fricking morons incapable of thought, so I just blame it on that.

Think you're getting things mixed up. Outside of "dumb ass cartoon", you're literally talking about China

        >you're literally talking about China
What's the difference anyway? Japan is just westernized China. They haven't even given up that subhuman Chinese writing system.

The Chinese writing system is cool because it’s not phonetic. It’s a purely written script, whereas our alphabet is phonetic. I might be able to guess how the German word “gesamtkunstwerk” sounds, but I wouldn’t necessarily know what it means. Whereas with Hanzi I would know what the word means but not how it sounds locally.
Picrelated means “water,” with the mandarin word being shǔi, and the Japanese word being mizu. Completely different spoken words for the same written symbol.

What is your problem, I'm just finishing up 2.5 weeks in Japan and had a great time

Admittedly I didn't manage to talk to many locals but made some new Zealand and American friends . I mostly put that down to not good enough JP though because people would still have basic conversations with me

Have you tried Tohoku? Or any other bumfrick nowhere locations for that matter. Tokyo, Osaka, and Okinawa (mainly the main island) are full of foreigners, you really won't get to speak much Japanese there

I still don't know where all these people who insist on speaking English are. The closest I get is a couple of shop staff who cobble together a couple of English words (poorly). Otherwise I have to rely on my babby-tier Japanese, pointing at things, and Google translate.

Same. Sometimes I find a random granny working in a supermarket who is surprisingly fluent in English but most of the time when I try to speak in English in a store they call the only person who can speak English (if they have any) who knows some basic English.

I find it funny how in Japan you're way more likely to find a random granny who speaks English than a young person who speaks English. the whole country is fricking moronic but the young people there are even stupider than your neighborhood brainless zoomers

It's modern but it's also traditional. And I don't mean that in a 'based' context, but rather they have high speed trains but also super rural villages in bumfrick nowhere that haven't been ruined by modern culture. So if you want to see what life was like 100 years ago before everything was ruined forever, Japan is a really safe bet both in you're going to find what you're after but also it is safe in that you won't have to sacrifice creature comforts.

    >AT LEAST SOME BASIC JAPANESE TO N5 LEVEL
N5 is so excruciatingly basic that I'm baffled you place "basic Japanese" as a level under this, before N5. No one besides a pathetic monolingual anglo would think knowing a few words in Japanese qualifies as knowing "basic Japanese", same for any other language.

Genuine skill issue. I've gotten jouzu'd in every real conversation I've had and people have been asking me where I live in Tokyo/Japan before I say I'm just a tourist. Currently I would peg my Japanese at maybe N3-3.5 at best. If you aren't getting responses in Japanese I don't know if your vocab/pronunciation are as good as you think they are, regardless of what the circlejerk language thread regulars might say. Who knows, maybe anonymous SighSee users don't have your best interests at heart?

      >he thinks being jouzu’d is a good thing
Good on you for getting out there and practicing your skills anon but I have to break it to you: getting jouzu’d, especially the basic “ 日本語上手!/日本語、上手ですね” is not actually a positive thing most of the time. This is what you get told upon busting out 1-2 phrases, if you‘re more fluent then most of the time you won’t be told anything at all or if you are told something, then it would be more elaborate than just jouzu or how long did you live in Japan/Tokyo

Got OP you are such a fricking gay. I live in Japan, I get by with my middling Japanese and aside from the occasional "thank you" and short phrase I basically only get spoken to in Japanese by those who also speak it here.
And you know what, like the Japanese appreciate me speaking Japanese I too appreciate the fact they've tried to learn my language because I'm not a weeaboo homosexual who needs to be in some idealised imagined Japan you got from anime or some dumb shit.
Anyway I'll continue being the Black person performing monkey for the Japanese speaking Japanese and English interchangably and making friends here easily rather than give a shit about your little homosexual idealised version of the country that never actually existed (hint; if Japan were still as Japanese as you want it to be almost nobody would talk to foreigners you fricking moron, it had closed borders for hundreds of years and after barely had any until it got nuked into submission).

Japan has a serious problem. When I went it was filled with asians. Absolutely zero diversity in 99% of the places I went. I was completely shocked to see someone else NOT asian. This needs to change drastically for Japan to survive.

I'm a huge moron, and I've sent my vaccine registration data via Visit Japan Web a fricking month and a half before the flight, now I have to wait 250 more hours before I can send it anew. I have a flight on the next week, and I'm not sure I could fill everything up on a board when the limit ends. Is there any way to cancel my previous vaccine data registration and do it again?

I live in Japan, have nearly-fluent Japanese (N1, but I know I can still do better), and still get Englished-at on the regular.
It's not because there are too many foreigners coming over who only know English. It's because the first thought in ANY Japanese person's head when they see a foreigner isn't "Does he know Japanese? Let me start in English first, just to be safe, and I'll switch over if he does"; it's "OH BOY, A FOREIGNER! I GET A CHANCE TO PRACTICE MY ENGLISH!"

They don't care about the effort you put into learning the language. They don't care if their English is worse than your Japanese. You're simply a practice opportunity to them, and they'll be getting that English practice out of you whether you like it or not. Even if you respond in high-level Japanese, they'll just keep on pushing in their broken English, or resort to using Japanese sentence structure while throwing in whatever English nouns they think they know. But they'll never use Japanese with you.

It's a narcissism epidemic of nationwide proportions, but it's not because foreigners don't know Japanese. It's just that the Japanese don't care about you at all.

I donno about your points about English but I do agree foreigners ruin Japan. Foreigners ruin a country in general. I mean look at Europe and its muslim problem.

Most of the foreigners in Japan are English teaching losers or low lifes who have no future and just do it because they have nothing else to do in their lives. I mean they have no skills but they speak English right? So they go to a safe country and teach it there.

A lot of them don't care to learn the language and just disrupt strict Japanese society with their disgusting Western mindset. Now that that's happening, soon Japan will be no different than your typical Western country.

Opening up was a mistake since the Meiji restoration.

I've lived in Japan after studying it for ages (10 years) but never having any practice speaking. People would speak to me in English when my Japanese was shit. Slowly I improved and became more confident and then they would reply in Japanese and actually look relieved that they didn't have to speak English.

I did avoid touristy places though.
