Anglos are just like black people. You have 1 or 2 of them in your hostel they're going to be funny and friendly. When there is too many of them they just ruin it for everyone else.

it's not about europe. there are certain meme destinations that ultra normie people go. thailand is one of them and normies don't like talking with "strangers". go to iran and stay in hostels. you'll find the most interesting travelers. go to berlin stay in a "popular" hostel, you'll see that no one is talking each other.

    >it's lower standard than what was in europe

Never had issues with hostels regardless the place, just look up reviews on hostelworld->cross check maybe with google reviews->book place depending on that.

Hostels in Australia were fun. You have nationalities all over and people go on daytrips together.

Where the frick are you staying in SEA? I'm Australian and I almost never meet any anglos in SEA hostels. They're usually Dutch, Italian, French, German, etc. I think on my last 4 week trip in Vietnam I met 2 Brits, 4 Americans, 1 Canadian and 2 Australians.
On the other hand I'd say I must have met over 20 Dutch travelers, those frickers move to travel.

Hostels themselves vary. I've found that most are just a cheap place to stay.

Max that feature, if you find good people along the way it is a bonus.

meh, depends on the day, sometimes there are only moronic bongs everywhere, sometimes you meet cool people. I feel it mostly depends on the location and how many groups there are. Super popular destinations will always be shit

    >Go to hostel in Malaysia to meet with my cousins
    >Not far from the beach, ran by a malay married to a german
    >Actually wanted to surprise my cousin, so I arrive unannounced
    >There were no beds left for the first night, but the owner prepares me a comfy makeshift bed in the roof over the terrasse
    >Wake up to the smell of breakfast and the sound of chill guitar
    >Get invited to parties on a private island
    >Love it so much I stay there and come back later that year
    >There are chill barbecues, some parties and even a wedding
    >I now have a traditional malay suit
    >Now the roof is a real room and they got a couple of baby cats

    I'm sorry for you OP

don't hostels just suck in general? they're like mystery chinese all you can eat buffet, you don't know what's in it, but you only had 4 bucks and they were the only place in town you could afford that wasn't as bottom of the barrel as mcdonald's or some shit. not that I'm speaking from experience, mind you. I always get a hotel or if friends let me crash with them then I'd do that instead. who wants to play roulette with that kinda shit?

No, they're great places to meet other solo travellers. But if you're in New York, Paris or Bangkok they're going to be trash and filled with uninteresting people. Normies who are just here for their instagrams and whatnot.
You have to go to less touristy places. Some of my best travel memories are from hostels in Kiev and Bucharest. Great people from all over Europe.
They usually have common rooms to drink and talk. They're great. The issue is not hostels themselves but where they are.
