Greece

Just got back from vacation here, wtf is wrong with this country? The popular islands like Santorini and Rhodes are great but Athens, Volos, Crete are undeniable shitholes. Greeks explain.

What were you expecting? Your comparing tourist traps with a southern European city of over 5 million people.

Expecting literal non-shitholes. Not sure why you think 6 gorillion means a place has to be a shithole. Besides, it wasn't just Athens that was a shithole.

      Athens is cool as frick.

      >Either a resident of said shithole or from a worse shithole.

If you live in Northern Europe (excluding. Sweden), Germany, Austria, Czechia or Switzerland. All other countries are utter shit holes. Every single one of them. Maybe the Baltic countries are decent too, I haven't been there yet, but every single part of the world stinks, is dirty, junk or with moronic drivers, no roads, etc.

All are shit holes compared to the places i named

I’ve been to most of the Greek islands and I’d take Athens over any of them any day of the week.

Yes it’s a shithole. That doesn’t mean it still can’t be an incredible place. If you want places that are squeaky clean and good for Instagram or whatever the frick, this isn’t the board for you.

Agreed, but athenians can be gnarly and garish and a bit swift eyed. Don’t go there being weak. Gotta be swoller than them

Agreed. Athens can be a somewhat gritty, rough place. People aren’t particularly friendly either.

That being said, the type of experience you can have there is hard to find in most of Europe these days. It’s a special place

Athens is a kino destination, for when you get tired of clean, friendly places that have been designed specifically for you. Napoli is the same.

can't you be more specific OP?

Do you mean they were dirty, or not visually appealing, or that the people were shitty?

Crete is gorgeous, the only place to my knowledge that has a bad rep is Malia because it's full of the worst lower class drunkards from across Europe, but the rest of the island is amazing. Anyway, it's a massive island so plenty of places to choose from. Which part are you going to?

Song as old as rhyme. It was my first time taking a cruise so I pretty much had to go to the touristy spots. I just had higher expectations for Greece and Athens in particular

Either Turkish, mutt, or from mainland Greece. Explain why it's top 3

Welsh, actually. The food, the villages, the mountain roads, the rusticness, the people. I just like it.

          >Elaborate on what you mean by "incredible place"

For me, half of my enjoyment whilst travelling comes from adventuring, exploring new areas and meeting weird and random people. Athens feels like one of the best cities on earth to do so. To me at least, it is the perfect mix of grimy and rundown, yet somehow incredibly romantic and charming. It’s the best kind of old meets new experience you can possibly have. The history of the city is incredible and really well preserved, and on the ground the city isn’t trying to present an artificial image- it’s authentic and raw as frick. Despite being a European capital city, it’s not full of stuck up upper-middle classes, yuppies and university students, literally everyone you meet is a hard working normal local that has been raised there. Great restaurants, even better bars, great museums, relatively cheap, also some fricking incredible beaches nearby.

One more thing. Athens attracts great tourists. Most of the other parts of Greece attract shitty people. Places like Malia which is full of drunk British 17 year olds, and Santorini which every other basic white woman wants so she can post the photos on Instagram. Athens doesn’t attract any of that. For a capital city, the flights are extremely limited in comparison to other places.

Thank you both for elaborating. Although I respect your opinions, Crete and Athens simply weren't for me.
          >Santorini which every other basic white woman wants for Instagram
jfc you have no idea, as soon as I got off the fricking boat, they came out of nowhere.

Have grill already so I'm loyal man. What I have noticed however is that ~21 is the Greek (and Turkish women) wall. If you want pretty girls, Tuscan area Italy all the way, absolute bombshells.

    >Athens, Volos

    [...]

    >I was only in Heraklion
You went to some of the shittiest places in Greece. You only missed Patra and you'd have been to them all. Even the rest of Greece shits on them. They're not even the good touristy spots. In Crete, Chania is infinitely better than Heraklion, Lavrio, the rest of Attica, Corinth, Nafplio, are all infinitely better, Volos has some gorgeous villages and beaches nearby if you just leave the city and head either up the mountain or around the sea. Sorry bro, better luck next time
