trying to decide which of the islands to spend a week or so on before continuing on to the mainland

      Bump. Greek anons?

      all the islands are nice
some are more geared towards expensive, luxury tourism (eg mykonos, paros, santorini)
others are more geared towards poorgays who wanna go camping
don't go before mid may or so, the weather won't be hot enough for going to the beach

another option would be to stick to a coastal area in the mainland
this will be cheaper, and you can skip the boat ride
      but less beautiful

I'm planning on being there early May and was hoping to get a lot of swimming in, might have to reconsider
I want to avoid the super touristy honeymoon areas like santorini, any lower key islands with cheaper hotels/restaurants/bars with better hiking and sightseeing?

sorry anon, despite being greek i actually haven't been to that many places
if you want something out of the beaten path, try Αιδηψος in Εύβοια (Aidipsos, Evoia)
i've personally been there, its nice, it also has some hot springs
but really the best thing about it is that the name of the place translates to "touching pussy" in ancient greek. not joking, that's really what it means. gotta be worth a visit, no?

paros is really good. When I went there I didn't really get the impression it was on the same expensiveness tier as mykonos and santorini but idk could be wrong

I was in Paros August 2022 and was a little bit shocked at how expensive it was relative to 2018/2019. I understand that the pandemic impacted tourism revenue badly but a decent meal for four was 300 EUR

Crete is failsafe- it is large enough to escape the normies but busy enough that there is life and stuff to see. Avoid Santorini as it is an Instagram rock and nothing else

Been there last year, I will summarize:

Tolls EVERYWHERE, factor that into travel costs, probably paying about 10 euro every 100 km.
Look for quieter spots that dont have tons of "foreign" tourists, my personal favourite was Kamena Vourla - it was mostly greeks on domestic holidays. Second favourite was Mytikas because it was much quieter than others.
Many of the roads and streets are poor and the drivers are crazy so always keep it in the back of your head to be careful.
Snacks are expensive, you want a bottle of coke? Some places sell 500ml cokes for 3 euro.
There are quite varying temperatures across the country, next to the ocean is generally cooler but in the midlands it can be agonizingly hot.
If driving, make sure to visit petrol stations often, lots of them close on a Sunday too so don't get stuck!
The Greeks are very kind (when they are not driving) and will talk to you if they can, some even took us home and were very hospitable.
Pay attention to google maps - if you are sure you have the right place but the journey says it takes a crazy long time, there is likely a valid reason (landslides etc).
A lot of places do not let you put normal toilet roll in the toilet - I wish I was kidding but they expect you to shit, wipe, and put your shitty wipes in the bin next to the toilet. This was honestly the most disgusting thing about Greece, I didn't even see one bidet.

Damn, I've lived in Indo and Korea before so I don't mind wipping and putting it in the bin but no Bidets. Literal savages. I thought this was where modern man was supposed to come from

    Get bougatsa for breakfast

  6. 1 year ago
    Anonymous

    • Greek food is the best, focus on grilled meat, fish
    • Try desserts: galatopita, bougatsa, galaktoboureko
    • Greek fast food is patrician. It's hard for foreign fast food companies to get a foothold because local fast food is so good. The go-to is Gyro or meaet skewers(kalamaki).
    • They got some bomb ass sour cherry drinks and sodas. Try the sour cherry one from Loux, amazing.
    • Try feta from a barrel. The Olympos one from a grocery store is good.
    • In Athens there are a lot of amazing eateries at all price ranges.
    • Avoid tourist traps and people who holler at you to sit in their place.
    • Unlike spain that barely has 30-50% (depending on area) of households with air conditioning, Greece has 99%. Who's the third country now?
    • Greece is a bit far behind technologically and many roads are completely shit. It's not great for shopping either. Around Athens' Kolonaki there are some shops though like Balenciaga and high-end watches boutiques. You won't find Uniqlo though.
    • Greeks are super nice
    • Some Greeks have inferiority complex and are whiny b***hes. The lowest class ones are nearer middle-eastern in their behavior instead of more north/western. Kefalonia and islands around the Ionian sea are colored by Italian heritage and genetics. They were never controlled by the Ottomans either. Completely different from the Cyrpean mutts or people from south Aegean islands.

      cont.
      • There is a lot of hidden wealth in Greece that is related to maritime shipping. Unbeknownst to many that aren't familiar with the sector, Greece boasts the largest fleet in terms of capacity, mogging even China and Japan.
      • These people usually have residences around the Attica region, summer house(s) on islands, yatch(s), residences in US east coast, UK, southern france, Switzerland. You won't meet these people though since they're very insulated.
      • Greek women aren't that great imho. I don't know what it is but they just don't do it for me.
      • Kamena Vourla as the anon mentioned is good. Crete is large and has tons to explore. You'll probably need years to figure it out. The culture in Crete also is a bit different. People there are a bit tougher and there's a Vendetta culture going on reminiscent of Italy. Often you'll see signage that has holes in it because of a shoot-out. They might be a bit taller and have blue eyes. Different phenotype.
      • Athens is basically many generations of different socio-economic backgrounds stacked on top of each other so there are stark differences of income. Someone who works in the shipping industry and does well might make north of 200k USD while an average person might struggle to get by with 800USD a month working at a grocery store clerk and never getting enough money to move out of the family home.
      • Distances in Athens can be quite large and the center is living hell during summer because of all the concrete that makes it like an over. During June-August, try to avoid Athens or keep it short or do activities after the sun sets.
      • Transport is not that good in Athens, just use Uber.

Food sucked, idk where people are getting the idea that Greek food is good. It’s okay at best. Even at “high end” traditional Greek places I didn’t find it all too good. Seafood is okay.
Most of the cool stuff in Athens can be seen in a couple days, a week at most. I walked around most of the city and there really isn’t much to see besides the acropolis and the surrounding archeological sights, the acropolis museum, etc. The nightlife is pretty mediocre by all standards, most neighborhoods are quite rundown and don’t look anything like the islands. If I could do it again, I’d go in the summer and only stay in Athens for maybe 3 or 4 days, then spend the rest of the time touring the islands. Greece is just kinda meh in the off seasons, I posted about it here before but I just felt like an inconvenience, i met a handful of friendly people but nowhere near what I experienced in other European countries. It really wasn’t too different from turkey in terms of standoffish-ness, and frankly the service in turkey was way better. I had this rosie idea of what Athens would be like based on all the historical sites I had read about looked like, but most of those are renderings, and the mainland looks nothing like the pictures of islands in OPs picrelated.
TLDR Athens for a few days max then hit the islands, preferably during summer season otherwise it will be very dead and boring

The food is extremely average and basic. It's not "great cuisine". It's grilled meat and salad. Extremely hard to frick up. Sure it's a nice pork chop and a good salad but how hard is that to do? The way people gush over Greek food is embarrassing. Moussaka is a very poor man's lasagne. Gyros are just over cooked dry chicken smothered in yoghurt and wrapped in flatbread.

Yeah ok… You've never had proper Greek food. Embarrassing take. Greek cuisine is certainly not as refined as French, but it doesn't pretend to be either and is excellent at what it does.

Greece is very nice if you love Antifa, communism, graffiti and pastries. I played a game for a few weeks where I would walk around and randomly stop and look around for antifa posters, the word antifa spray painted on a building etc. 4 was the lowest number the average was over 10. The weird thing is I never saw any of those freaks and only 1 troony so maybe they are just stupid kids who have the time and resources to put up thousands of huge posters making everything look like shit

Communism really got a foothold in the 70s because Greece was showing its power level with the Junta (the jails were empty + nice economic growth). Think about the neighbors further up the Balkans to imagine what shitfest that is.

17th November was a terrorist org that planted random bombs. The anarchist neighborhood of Exarchia is filled with spoiled uneducated c**ts that glorify Anarchism and Commie ideologies. Some of them are hardcore old-school linuxgay hackers but most of them are little c**ts. They have some fun shit going on like outdoor free movies that have been piratebay'd.

What's interesting to see though is the influence that US liberal academic complex has on other commie-related milieus such as in Athens. The influence of the US media machine is massive. It dictates just so much now.

The islands are all nice, but many are a bit dull. There really isn't a whole lot to do on them and once youve seen one or two you've seen all. If you like quieter islands with hiking I could highly recommend Amorgos. Santorini is pretty incredible and worth visiting. If you want a party island then Ios or Mykonos are your best options.

The comment about staying on the mainland but staying coastal is a good one. In the Peloponnese you have places like Nafplio which are beautiful and highly worth a couple of nights. Sparta was interesting but one night was enough (mystras near by well worth 1/2 day).

Olympia is ok for the main site, but a tourist trap overall. Delphi was interesting too. But touristy but interesting for sure. There is a little town below Delphi called Galaxidi that is great for lunch.

Athens is really the highlight. You can stay cheaply in the center area and be within walking distance of all the best stuff.

My recommended itinerary for 2 weeks would be something like:

    > Athens 1 night
    > Get ferry boat down to a couple of islands (2 nights on each)
    > Ferry back to Athens (2 nights to explore Athens)
    > Hire car and drive around Peloponnese visiting Nafplio (2 nights), Sparta/Mystras (1 night)
    > Olympia (1 night)
    > Delphi (1-2 nights)
    Athens (1 night) -> home.

Yeah Crete is really easy without a car. I go there often (family is from there) and I never rent a car. I'd recommend being based in Chania and traveling places from there.

Thanks, yeah, I'm planning on staying in Chania for a majority of the time then a day or two in Heraklion before I take the ferry to the other islands. Any recs on where to stay (area or specific hotels)? The old town area by the water looks nice.

I would recommend Cocoon hostel. It’s super cheap, really clean, and overall just nice. You’re a 5 minute walk from the harbor and everything in the city. But if you have a bigger budget staying at any of the hotels on the water at the harbor are nice too.

The KTEL buses in Crete were really good. I went from Heraklion and visited a few beachside towns over the few days I was there, never got out to Chania although a lot of people say it renders Heraklion useless for tourism. One thing with Heraklion, Knossos fricking sucks, if you're into history then Knossos is just an insult as 80% of the "ruins" are just recreations deviously made to look like real ruins; the Rocca a Mare fortress in Heraklion was awesome however, go there if you are in Heraklion great view and history. Crete was my favourite place on my Greece trip.
The KTEL buses I actually found quite good across the entire country, I also enjoyed the overnight ferry from athens to heraklion, I slept on a couch in the bar room and saved money on a night's accommodation.

Adding to my hostel recommendation, I'll also recommend to go check out a beach called Seitan Limani (Satan's harbor). I avoided it for awhile because all my family that lived there said it's not great to go to but it was one of my favorite beaches. It's a hike down a bunch of rocks from where the bus leaves you so you need decent footwear and there's no amenities at the beach there but you can climb up the cliffs and dive off and it's a great time.

Thanks much anons, I'm not usually one for hostels but I'll be sure to check out the fortress and Seitan Limani. Good to hear the buses are reliable for travel beyond the main cities.
