Something top of the line with solid stitching and reinforcement everywhere you can get for $40-$100 depending on how heavy duty you want to get. You can get perfectly serviceable military surplus ones for $25 or less. As long as the zippers and D rings aren't plastic and the material is heavy, you can't go wrong.
Duffelbags are more efficient for me because I don't have to dig deep in them like a big backpack

Not sure, I need to think. My trip will be in winter and I refuse to check luggage, but I need to bring at least two jackets. I could wear the big one while going from one place to another I guess

theres also 'suitcase' style backpacks but I found them slightly less convenient cause its harder to just unzip the main compartment and throw shit in there
the backpack is usually considered the "personal item". i like soft duffels because you can squeeze them into overheads if all you pack into them is clothes and cheat out a little more space.
duffle bags are great if you're ok with things breaking inside, clothes being completely wrinkled, carrying it non stop and potentially having liquid leak into or out of it.
Duffle bags combine the disadvantages of suitcase and backpacks but offer little in return for benefits. But hey you can use it as the worlds worst pillow

Soft. But I had a small hard rollaboard carryon for a while, and had mixed results. I don’t travel with much in the way of fragile stuff. I can see some hard cases being a good choice if you were. >checked or carry-on
If traveling alone, carry-on. If traveling with the whole family checked is inevitable. >cheap or expensive
Midrange, probably closer to expensive than cheap. After many years of travel and many brands, I’ve found that my favorite bags are made by Travelpro. I used to use the cheapest luggage possible, but it doesn’t last and will inevitably have to be replaced, making it a lot less cheap before long. The hard-shell rolling cabin bag I used to have was cheap and it died after just two years of semi-frequent business travel. Not worth it. But I find that some really expensive bags offer diminishing returns. I don’t need a slot for an in-suitcase power block. My wife has a Rimova that is fine but does little more than look cool for the price.

military-issue Pelican case. Everything else, can be stolen from easily if you go to other countries. With these cases, you can put two locks and it will be almost impossible to steal from short of cutting the locks or destroying the case.
If it's 1 week or less, i just use my Eastpack backpack. I don't want to look like a tourist.
But inside it, i use those organisers inserts (or whatever you call them).
If it's over a week, i use a hardcase suitcase (i only do hotels, i'm not a begpacker).
I used to bring only a duffel bag but now I find I'm bringing more and more stuff. Camera, lenses, laptop, spare batteries etc to the point where I'm bringing the duffel plus a regular hard rolly boi, since I know I'll need even more space when coming home anyway.
Sucks that I'm not really low maintenance anymore but what can I do

You don’t get it. Having a %100 remote position is a completely different dynamic. The weekends don’t exist, my weekend is whenever I want it to be. Working hours don’t exist, there’s just the meetings I need to make and the deliverable dates. It’s not this linear 9-5 thing anymore. Vacation means I’m just reachable in case of something dire but I won’t be showing up to anything or getting anything done.
Imagine being a remote worker in 2023, knowing that you will be replaced very soon by AI, because any real work requires face to face interaction. Imagine sitting in your cum stained sweatpants at home while microdosing shrooms in front of your laptop for 14 hours a day and calling that "work". Then imagine complaining about your stress and anxiety from your job. Who will be the first to be replaced?
Thanks for making this thread OP, I actually need to buy some bags/cases since I will be moving and travelling lots very soon.
I want to get one of these, is the 1535 Peli Air the correct choice? It seems to have the largest possible dimensions for checked luggage.

Thoughts on Ortlieb? Very expensive (180€ for pic related) but I want something with this kind of coated fabric. They sell a 49L one with an IP64 rating too, but I suppose it doesn't make sense to buy something that's not entirely waterproof if I want something that'll last me a lifetime.
I’m really not a fan of anything with plastic buckles like that but coated canvas can’t be beat imo. I will say the coating will start to crack and flake after 4-5 years of heavy use unless Ortlieb is using something super high quality.
>big ass Pelikan case

Soft - you want to be able to smush the carry-on into an overhead bin. Can't do that with hard.
Carry-On - even if I'm going for a week I get everything in a CO because frick waiting at the carousel.
Mid but quality - I've had a $100 Swissgear bag for the past decade. It just needs to be a good quality nylon with good spinner wheels.
No preference for hard or soft bag.
I only take checked if I am going to buy alot of items with a duffle bag inside of it in case I need even more.
Otherwise its just backback and duffle
Only check on international flights. Hard and expensive. I was cheap when I was younger but spent enough time traveling for work that I got tired of destroying cheap ones and got a Rimowa.
For the past 7 years, I've only been traveling with a single 40L backpack. On my next trip, I'm thinking of expanding my baggage. There were a lot of things I wanted to buy in my past few trips but couldn't, on account of insufficient baggage.
I'll probably opt for a hardshell suitcase that is roughly carry-on size. My plan is to take both the suitcase and my usual backpack as carry-on, but having the backpack act as my "personal item." If the airlines catch me on my bullshit, no biggie, I can check the hardshell.
genuinely curious what compels people to use these huge backpacks. it's understandable if they're doing a multi day hike or trek where they actually need to carry stuff for survival and camping. you don't need the biggest fricking backpack available for your 10 day trip to Europe where you're city hopping. are you just throwing shit in there as you go like you're in a MMORPG?
I think it makes people feel special, like "true backpackers"
I don't get it either, it takes way too long to dig around these and packing and unpacking them is a whole process.

Been traveling between Europe and the US with a checked bag for decades. Hard/Soft cases with a backpack (carry-on) and a messenger bag (personal item).
Valuables (Laptop, Camera, headphones) go in the messenger bag, extra packing room in the carry-on, rest goes in the checked bag.
Will likely switch to a carry-on duffel bag and a tougher laptop bag/case. Waiting for baggage claim sucks and the wait triggers my autism every time (doubly so when having to recheck for a connecting flight in the US). >cheap or expensive

I finally bought into the Osprey meme after traveling regularly for six years and trying all sorts of cheaper alternatives. Gotta say they're worth the money.
>I can just buy the things I need when I arrive.
I fell for this meme. In other countries there are completely different product priorities and aesthetics, you have to figure out which stores sell what, even just walking around a store and locating a particular product can be a huge time sink. I found in asia travel sized products besides toothpaste were almost non-existent. If you don't plan outside of your trip, you're going to be planning inside of it.
Hard carry on if I expect to bring back lots of easily breakable stuff, which is rare. Otherwise it's a backpack, which is especially helpful if I expect to be moving about a lot. Although I did recently but a carry-on hard case for a trip to Africa.
duffle bag chads rise up

>I can just buy the things I need when I arrive.
I fell for this meme. In other countries there are completely different product priorities and aesthetics, you have to figure out which stores sell what, even just walking around a store and locating a particular product can be a huge time sink. I found in asia travel sized products besides toothpaste were almost non-existent. If you don't plan outside of your trip, you're going to be planning inside of it.
I can't imagine what it is you're struggling to find.
Hard carry on if I expect to bring back lots of easily breakable stuff, which is rare. Otherwise it's a backpack, which is especially helpful if I expect to be moving about a lot. Although I did recently but a carry-on hard case for a trip to Africa.
