I did it, it was amazing. I did it twice and did backpacking through Europe and then Japan.
Lots of fun at hostels and hotels, lots of sex and drugs, best summer at 22 and 23 right before I joined Google.

I have seen these tour groups arrive at hostels and it’s pretty striking. I don’t have any animosity for people who travel on limited time and blitz through things (I actually believe there is some serious benefit to less time rather than more) but these outfits take that mentality and cheapen it dramatically. It’s like spending boomer-tier prices for backpacking-tier quality. The whole point of hostel and backpacking is traveling and doing more on limited budgets. Paying fifty bucks a night for a Peruvian hostel defeats that point.
The boomer versions of these look unironically dope though. Everything in English, highest tier guides, awesome accommodation and food and premier access to all the greatest hits without even carrying your own bags. That’s the way to go, find the stuff marketed to sixty year olds. For instance, it can very difficult to find the best English speaking bird guide in a certain area (or even a good one), and these old folks tours do it. The prices are high, but at least so are the standards.

for my high school Grade 12 trip they contracted EF Tours to do Spain, Provence, Italy. it was about as fun as you would expect a teacher-chaperoned trip to be, but aside from that no complaints it was decent
Tours are dumb and expensive. Go to country with no plans and once you're there go wherever you like, whenever you like. How is that stressful?
