Has anyone rebel tent camped much around central Europe?

Has anyone rebel tent camped much around central Europe?
I plan on riding the Danube river path and wondering how easy not paying for campsites will be, and if I will be hassled by police or locals or robbed by thugs
I will report back when I start my trip
The anon that slept in bushes in Italy and got eatten alive by mosquitos inspired me

Yea I've stealth camped in every country in western an central Europe. It's super easy. I've slept in caves in Sardinia, orchards in Gascony, olive groves in Andalucia, alpine meadows in Switzerland. Nobody gives a frick except town council goons, and they're easy to avoid. The #1 rule is there will always be a dog-walker who wakes up earlier than you. Carry that expectation everywhere.
It only gets tricky if you want a fire. Always have your fire at dusk, when it's dark enough to hide the smoke, but light enough so your flame isn't noticeable. And hide the remains of your fire before you go to sleep in case you get caught in the morning.

Sweet, any highlights worth sharing ?

      Nobody cares.

That being said the Danube bike path really sucks from Bulgaria/Romania onwards.

I will probably just go Germany to Slovakia or Hungary

Pretty easy to buy a decent bike and then sell it back after using for a few weeks ?

The stretch between Passau and Vienna is the highlight of the trail. Onwards to Budapest is alright, then it gets very boring until you reach the Iron Gates. The remainder of the trail on the Romanian/Bulgarian border is just ass.

Just do it in northern Europe where it's fully legal.

I did that in the former yugo countries (Serbia, Bosnia, Croatia, Slovenia). Plenty of places to camp out for free. A bunch of times though, I'd be in a small village in the middle of nowhere so I'd just approach a house with my pre-printed introduction that said "Hi, I'm anon backpacking from anonlandia, would you be ok with me setting up tent in your backyard? I'd feel safer that way. I'll be on my way again in the morning". Most times people said yes and gave me tons of food, some offered hot showers, pretty hospitable people. Some said no but told me to go check with their neighbors. If they spoke some english, I'd tell them about my trip and they would tell me their stories, fun times.

Can you share any more on this? This sounds like it could be interesting, but I am surprised to hear that your experience with the locals was such a nice one. I would like to do something similar and I do speak the language, my family comes from there, even lived a bit there, but because of that I would never assume people would be that friendly to let you tent in their backyards. I would've thought you'd rather get shot.

When I would go through a big city (Belgrade, Sarajevo) I'd go to a hostel, but other than that I always stayed at people's houses, other times just stealth camping. Again, everybody was super nice. I was also hitchhiking and same thing, people would pick me up in a matter of minutes, they'd buy me lunch, some would go out of their way to drive me to where I was going. Amazing experience.

A good stealth camping spot is cemeteries, I've done that a bunch of times, nobody goes there at night.

Do you mean 'stealth camping'? It is very easy. Always think in terms of why would anyone come to this place at 2am? Then you realize almost everywhere is fair game. I always put lots of effort to avoid detection as I don't like being interrupted in sleep or otherwise bothered. I set up camp late, avoid using fires (one of the few things that can get you a serious fine in some dry countries during summer as it can cause bushfires costing billions of €), I don't use lights and I wake up early. If I can, I hide my camping gear by packing it in my bag or by covering it with something. Don't be afraid of buying a shitty, cheap tent as sometimes if you set up your camp late, let's say because you thought the previous spot was good when it wasn't and had to bail to somewhere else, you can stumble into thorns, etc. that can seriously frick up your gear. So cheap, Chinese made gear can go to bits and you won't stress over it. That obviously depends on your wallet.

That guy specifically had the right idea, but he was bit of a moron as he decided to do it while it is the hottest part of the year there and there are mosquitos everywhere. In general he didn't seem to have much sense about him, I'm not sure how to say this lol. But they're doing stuff, so that's better than 99% of "I'm thinking of XYZ..." people browsing this board that never do anything cool.

Yeah more people do call it "stealth" versus "rebel" I should of used that
I have done it all over the states on motorcycle rides and I live in a truck in the states so I am a familiar with it around here. On my motorcycle rides I was never bothered with my tent camping in random grass lots
In the truck, sometimes cops wake me and ask me to leave
Yeah I wonder what based bug bite bush sleeper anon is doing now

Honestly SighSee sucks for this kind of a thing, I recommend SighSee for hiking and camping advice. Lots of like minded people there. People here are more concerned with getting hookers and weed rather than through hiking/cycling.

There's lots of guys who've done something similar to Vagrant Holiday or have been homeless for a long time. My favourite was some autistic Brit creating a pallet shanty town on some oil company owned land. If Urbex is your thing, it's a thing there too. I'm going to be doing 3 or 4 weeks of hiking the St. Francis trail this August and I am torn where to post my thread about it. I think it belongs on SighSee, but it could as well be on SighSee. For once I've seen more discussions about Camino et al on SighSee than here.

Thru hiking is definitely more SighSee, people here are mostly interested in cities and third world coomer resorts

Only in France and Britain but it was very easy and I had no issues. The thing about dog walkers is so true but if you don't leave a scorched fire pit and litter everywhere nobody will judge or bother you.
