Hi?

Hi SighSee
I’m new to this board and couldn’t find anything about it in the sticky.

Looking for advice on travelling to Africa in mid 2023.
>25yo Doctor from UK taking a year away from practice
>Travelling with 2 guy friends
>Budget ? (Would like to pay maximum £3500)
> 10 days
>goals: To see wildlife big 5, opportunity for nice bars and Clear skies + to meet other young travellers

Is my best bet Tanzania and Zanzibar? Is SA overrated would I get HIV if I fricked a local?

what kind of 25yo doctor takes a year off? Have you even practiced for a year?

      Anonymous

      Yes.
Once you finish the foundation programme in UK many doctors take an “F3” year before entering their specialty training.
Year off is a loose term, most of it is locuming with flexible working hours and enough time to take holidays and travel.

life as a uk doctor underpaid
very common to take years out of training to either frick around or to do service provision
25yo could have done a 2 year internship which is one milestone very common for uk doctors to no longer directly go into next step of training nowadays - it wasnt like that 10 years ago more rare

I always request the doctor's CV to make sure they didn't have a gap year like OP. I refuse to be treated by some lazy frick. Get 20 days off a year like the rest

I can afford private healthcare, haven't been to one of their chav and boomer infested health centers in years.

            >20 days off a year like the re
they get 27 days annual leave starting out
im sure most would be relieved to have a patient refuse their care, but your fake example wouldn't show all "gap years" - locum for a bit but only do 2 weekends a month? do a holiday in africa but work at some poverty hospital for a few weeks?

            >im sure most would be relieved to have a patient refuse their care
No, not in the private sector. We are their bread and butter and generally, they depend on word of mouth. Only 2 morons have refused to show me their CV and instead showed their "muh Oxbridge diploma". I told them that they could wipe their ass with that. I made 2 mil with crypto trading, their diploma means shit to me. I won't trust my parents' health to anyone who 1. Refuses to show me their CV and 2. Took over a 6 months gap

Doctors live over their heads in this country, I tell you what. In other countries they are just treated as they should.

Private health care in the UK is booming. My brother is an Orthopaedic surgeon and he is shitting money. There’s so many patients he has a backlog of procedures to do.

Could bet any money the doctor didn’t give two shits that he didn’t have to deal with you.

              >What did you enjoy
the safari, especially ngorongoro crater and serengeti np. The walking safaris were all quite good, though they can be a bit scammy (lake natron waterfall hike)
              >What did you not enjoy
lots of scammers in the towns/cities, masai boma visit is a scam
              >What would you do differently anon?
would have been nice to do something on mt. kilimanjaro, but that's quite expensive to do. got sick at lake manyara camp (maybe ice). blew up my camera battery charger because of a power surge at one of the camps, so maybe bring a surge protector. I was able to rent a battery charger from a camera store in a town for pretty cheap though. one thing I'll say, anon is that it was extremely dry when we went (around christmastime) which the guides say is becoming increasingly common, dust is a part of safari, make sure you're ready for it, can give you a hacking cough.
              >What were the other travellers like?
mixed bag, but it's expensive so most people were a bit posh for my liking. I'd say in general older, though that doesn't mean they're bad to hang out with. hung out with a middle-aged belgian man who seemed to miss his youth a bit, wouldn't stop talking about belgian beer. nice guy, had a literal mansion in belgium.

Thanks anon that’s really helpful. Just a few more questions because I’m curious and on the brim of just booking the trip.
What time of year did you go?
Have you been to any other places in Africa? If so how does it compare?

I went to Zambia in 2013 and had the best time of my life. Didn’t go on any safaris or partying though just camping hiking and meditation on mount mompu with some friends

no, i haven't, tanzania is the only place I've been in africa. It's very different from other places I've been (europe, scandanavia, north america).

went on a tanzania safari in 2021, skipped zanzibar to avoid extra travel hassle with flights (covid hassle). went on a 10 day guided tour through arusha np, ngorongoro crater, serengeti (multiple days), lake manyara, tarangire nps. Saw all the big 5 up close except the rhino, which we could see in binoculars in ngorongoro. The camps we stayed at were all had their own bars and lots of travellers to talk to.

          to expand a bit:
the lake natron waterfall hike was beautiful, and the tour out to lake natron was very cool (alkaline lake). arusha np walking safari was great we got quite close to some buffalo, warthogs, baboons.
          >masai boma
they dress you in some traditional garb and do a welcome dance, do a jumping contest where men would compete over women by literally who can jump the highest, they lit a fire by hand drill, showed us their huts with some traditional things in them. the scam is that everyone wants a cut, it's not a flat fee, each of those steps is done by a different person and they want money for it, the women will sell beaded trinkets too for way too much money. then they bring you in front of the children who sing pitifully and then ask you for money, which was annoying as shit.
