Hidden Gems - Japan Thread

Any good hidden gems in japan?

I love beautiful places and landmarks but I absolutely hate when its filled with tourists and cameras. Most of them are cringe and are extremely ignorant/disrespectful towards japanese culture.

It can also be lesser-known places in big cities. If you had incredible experiences in underrated places (towns/prefectures/landmarks) let me know.

        1. No, OP doesn't speak Japanese.
        2. Why ruin the places with fricking horrible weebs?
        3. This is the failure of an anonymous board, I share places tons of times on niche hobby places e.g. urbanexploration groups, in JP/Asia and it's shared with nice

So, I'll keep my hidden jems and landmarks to myself, I share them on the appropriate place, but SighSee isn't that place, nor is an anon like you. 🙂

Honestly yes this board gives a lot and i will let you in on an open secret about an incredible place .

Shirahama Beach in Wakayama was one of the best days I’ve lived. Take the train in. It’s not over crowded , it’s perfect .

To live that day again , I’ll never forget.

      Looks great.

Takayama in Gifu was very pleasant. Its a small city far in the hills with an intact old town.

Nearby Hida is famous for beef so you can get great beef dishes there. Beef sushi is a local favorite and probably the best thing I ate in my last Japan trip.

Theres also old style homesteads (think Shirakawa style). Shirakawa itself is pretty close by bus.

I stayed at a cozy hotel in the old town. They gave free alcohol, including a variety of local sake. Just dont be the foreigner guzzling down all of the sake just because its free.

Would go again, preferably with my girlfriend.

I've heard of Takayama. Looks remote from Tokyo enough to not be filled with tourists (at least the worst ones).

Any of the islands that are more than 30 minutes away from the main islands can be considered hidden gems.

      >My post has 7 replies and its still on page 1 lmao.
It used to be much slower

      and better.

Literally just get out of the reddit zone and you're good.
Spent 6 months in Shikoku and Kyuushuu with gf and we saw maybe 10 white people total.

If you want easy mode look at the islands you can reach from Fukuoka or Sasebo, like Ojika or Iki.
        knows the trick too apparently.

What's there to do on Shikoku, other that the 80+ temples pilgrimage? I did the Shimanami Kaido up to Imabari in Shikoku, though I didn't stay long on the island. My only regret was that I didn't go to the Matsuyama Castle, but other than that, what's there to do/see that you can't do on the main island?

Quite a few of the 88 temples are nice.
Takamatsu is a nice town, Ritsurin Gardens is lovely. Yashima is nice.
            Monet's Garden Marmottan
            Takaya Shrine
            Kotohira-gu
            Iya Valley
Anywhere in the Seto inland sea is nice if you consider that too.

Thanks for the suggestions anon. Yeah, doing more of the Seto inland see definitely is on my list. Going by bicycle through the bridges was nice, and it reminded me that, yes, I'm on a bigass island and of course the sea is there! It felt nice, as I don't live anywhere close to the sea in my home country, nor do I ever go to it. And during my trip in Japan, I didn't feel much like I was on an Island due to the spots I visited, other than the little sidetrip I mentioned.
Any suggestions of more coastal areas to visit are welcomed, even more if they're hidden gems, as per the subject of the thread.

Yakushima Island is starting to get some exposure, but I'm yet to see a video that does it justice.
    >mountains
    >beaches
    >rainforests
    >rivers
    >immaculate, wide roads
    >natural, mixed hot springs with nude Japanese mums
    >massive butterflies and flying fish
    >deer, macaques and turtles
    >giant cedar trees hundreds, if not thousands years old

All on an island you can circumnavigate by scooter in about 3 hours. It's the best place in Japan by a mile & you usually only see locals or Korean tourists there.

I came here to say this.
There's also an onset that's only accessible at low tide.

Yakushima is one of the things I'm doing on my next trop (though it sucks it's getting recognition, but hey, I'm a fricking tourist myself), how long did you stay there? Also I assume you rented a scooter? This island is not known for having good public transportation, why would it in the first place, I wish I could do everything by bus instead of renting a car (never used anything 2 wheels other than a bike, and I don't intend to first use one in a country where they don't drive on the right side of the road)

I've been three times, staying 1-2 weeks each. You *must* get a scooter. I can't stress this enough. You will not experience Yakushima properly if you don't. The beautiful circuit around the island, and the wide, winding roads up into the mist covered mountains are made for riding.

If you can ride a bike, you can ride a scooter. An automatic 60cc is fine. Cars drive slowly & carefully. You'll rarely go over 50km/h, if at all. Most cars meander around at about 40km/h. There are hardly any corners so you'll get used to driving on the 'wrong' side of the road quickly. Just get one, believe me.

NTA but wanted to ask if you were doing hikes and if you did how would you rank them?

Was there once and did shiritani unsuikyo and the jomon sugi, but I want to go back and do some of the lesser travelled trails.

Literally just go to Gifu. Post town trail hikes (Magomejuku), Takayama, Shirakawa-Go, Hida, Gero, Iwamura + Iwamura Castle... Gero is a hot spring town whose motto is essentially "where the locals go to vacation" so it should be what you're looking for if you want lazy days at an onsen. Gifu overall will have some tourists but it's mostly old style Japan that most tourists avoid because not Tokyo/Kyoto.

Adding on to this, does anyone have any nice winter walks around Tokyo, Osaka, and Hokkaido? I really like stuff like the minoo river trail and waterfall, but it's hard to search for stuff that specific.

have blonde hair, be white and keep your bush untamed. Japanese men are used to full pubic hair and find it erotic. The bet cities are obviously Tokyo, but there's also a decent MMA scene in Fukuoka.

I went to Fujiyoshida, failed to figure out how to get on the train around town at first, and lines for bicycle rentals were long, so I walked to my destinations. I found a few nice hidden spots that way. You should try something like that, take a walk to something you want to see, even take a roundabout route. You will find your own. Japan is full of them.

All you need is a vehicle. Many very popular places especially in Chugoku, Kyushu and Tohoku are 'inaccesible' simply because you can only get their via car or a 6 hour train/bus ride one way. What I usually do is look up a prefecture I am staying at or within a two hour drive, lookup the best things to do their and get a list of like 7 or 8 items.
