There are ""people"" on this board who actually sleep in hostels

>sleep on bedbug infested bunk beds with 24 complete strangers (statistically at least 4 of these will be schizos)
>catch funky foot diseases in the shower
>spend all night listening to snorers, farters, and sexers (just wear earplugs bro 😉 )
>no airconditioning, only a single rusted out oscillating fan for the whole room
>toilet sanitation that would shame an Indian
>inevitably someone hogs that toilet vomiting and projectile sharting all night after eating the local street food, for the enjoyment of the entire room

All to save $5 a night

Dunno what shit ass places you go to but basically everything you listed can be avoided with some basic looking around on Hostelworld and not booking the cheapest rat nest in SEA. If the hostel doesn't at least have a website or listing on booking.com/hostelworld/hotels.com I ain't touching that shit with a 10 ft pole.

The ones I've stayed in Japan, Korea, Norway, Finland, Germany, Hawaii, Alaska, Canada, and some others have all been fine.

    >All to save $5 a night
Try more like 25 at minimum. For some of the places you can snag a hostel private room hotels go for way more. Place I am staying in Hawaii for 2 weeks was like 35/night and is pretty good from what I recall.

At the end of the day you generally get out of it what you put into it. I have 0 sympathy for the morons who base their entire hostel outlook based on the fact they went off the cuff and booked a cheap ass place in SEA because they are begpack tier travelers.

Unironically this. Some of my most rewarding experiences while traveling have been with people I've met at hostels, men and women both.

On the other hand, I've had a trip that should have been fantastic on paper be ruined because I sat in an Airbnb for a month with no one to go out with. Tinder matches didn't stick, the one pub crawl I could find in town was so inactive that it happened only once in the month I was there.

I don't understand how people travelling alone and staying for less than two weeks want to book via Airbnb.
Airbnb is fantastic for group trips and longer stays, but why bother with them for short stays?

Unless there's a bar open to general public it will come off as weird trying to hang out at a place you're not even staying it. Staff will just guess you're trying to sneak in a dorm for a free night of sleep and guests will think you're desperate for pussy. Just go to normal bars, it isn't like there's a shortage of good looking women there.

There's been a few times I showed up at a hostel, asked about their tours/group activities for the next day, said 'hey, you have a bar', and hung with the residents there.
Not going to lie though - I've slept with possibly 100+ women, but never picked one up directly at a hostel. First, because hostel women in the hemisphere I live in are not top shelf women. And also because I really did go to hostels to ask about group activities. The few passable women in them just aren't worth fighting over.

There are some hostels with more "open" layout and activities, but 90% of time it will look weird and makes no sense. Plenty of good looking girls in hostels, you need to follow popular youth destinations during high season. On low season most hostels are filled with smelly bums and weirdos. And no shit, 10/10 women aren't hanging around hostels. Most earn money purely by existing through modelling or social media at that point in looks. I doubt you or anyone has even touched a genuine top tier girl. You need looks, wealth, status and everything for that. Basically NBA player or famous actor.

at least until a 5-10 years ago it was possible to get those kind of girls if you met them when they were 18
now they all probably realise how attractive they are much younger

And such women are rare but yes, they can earn money purely by existing unless they're extremely moronic and don't understand their appeal, but almost no truly insanely beautiful woman isn't aware of just how good they look like. But it's irrelevant as most people will never see someone that good looking in flesh or interact in any way with them.

If you're relatively young looking then you can just walk into a hostel and join whatever they have going on. Hostel staff dont give a frick unless there's some sort of access card system / wristband shit to ID people. I'm pretty sure it's an unofficial universal rule for hostels to just let people wander in for the social activities so the atmosphere feels less dull

I was low on money (had just gotten laid off from a remote job). Couldn't justify paying for a night at a hostel when I already had accommodations booked. It took everything I had just to be able to come back to my parents' place with my tail between my legs.

Making sure you're aggressive enough to get somewhere in the limited time you have, but not enough where you come off as a creep?

A first date on Tinder is nothing by comparison. At least you get to go home at the end of it.

I'm going to the Balkans for a few weeks next month and the hostels range from $12 to $26 USD. Hotels range from $70 to $100 which is cheap compared to American standards but that is still considerable savings over two weeks accommodations. It's also not hard to do your due diligence and research the quality of the hostel and the type of people it attracts. This is not hard

Never been in a room with more than four beds one gender only and quite often got a room with nobody else in it, and at most one or two other people. When you are young and poor it's fine time to time to save money for other things and meet people but it gets old fast. I think I lost my shit when I ended up living in one until I found other housing, because there are some rude disgusting people at those places, come in late and turn on lights and make noise digging through bags and laughing, hogging the bathroom, or snoring, so I end up paying more to stay at hotels with no regrets.

A low dose of shrooms helps that a lot but its not something to be taken lightly carrying it overseas. Airport dogs wont sniff them so probably safe if theyre gelcapped and in a medicine bottle. Dont really want to try that though.

banged out a french white girl in japan at a hostel in akasaka (tourist area), my first white girl (i'm asian), hung around the common area and a bunch of us ended up going to a bar, we had good banter and when i left a little early she wanted to "walk back to the hostel with me," grabbed drinks at 7-11, went to her 4 man dorm and banged, the others weren't back yet

I did not enjoy my stay in a hostel when I visited London. It was impossible to sleep comfortably with a fricking guy coughing his lungs out under me. Talking to people was cool though. I might go again if I book a private room - the joint has those too but the bathrooms would be shared still. Sorry Brits, but I just plain dont like shitting in front of women. When I hit Nottingham I ate the cost to stay in a Travelodge instead and felt much better.

I went to Budapest in October. We hung out with some locals and a few tourists and did a group dinner. Our bill for food and multiple rounds of drinks for 7 people was $120, so my girlfriend and I paid for everyone. They were shocked. One of the guys was staying in a hostel that was on the way back to our Airbnb. We walked with him on the way home just to see what it looked like. They were closets with 6 bunk beds stacked to the celling. The smell was unbearable. We left him and went back to a 3 bedroom Airbnb that we rented for a 140 bucks a night. It was newly furnished, king bed in the master bedroom, had a full size jacuzzi, a washer and dryer, a full kitchen, living room and a view. The difference between staying in a prison cell and luxury in eastern Europe is about a hundred dollars a night.

You are never old. You are just too old for certain things. At 21 you could rock up to anywhere in the world as a backpacker and stay in a hostel, now in your late 20s you'd be considered an old weird loser. You would need to go and stay in a nice hotel and do things in style

You must level up with age

      It's not the same feeling.

Young, dumb, in your 20s. You stay in a hostel and meet college girls. You can bareback the girls and creampie their fertile pussies.

In your 30s or 40s, you stay in a nice hotel. You call an escort and have lame, rushed condom sex.

      It's not the same feeling.

These days I don't assemble a party crew to hit the bars because I'm a recovering former crippled alcoholic. >I'll take paying 20$ more a night in a first world expensive location
At min 20-30 dollars, most were closer to 60-70 due to the locations being at or so close to downtown it wasn't an issue.
                >shitter with a bunch of Indians or Chinese blowing the seats up.
Never had this problem, don't book the cheapest hostel and your situation is fixed. If something doesn't look right just go to a different floor use that one boom done.

It's not the toilets, it's the showers. After a day of travelling all I want is a nice clean shower without frickers around me, then to get in to a clean bed where it's quiet and nobody is around. I'd gladly pay the extra for that, hostels offer nothing if you have a bit of extra money.

                Anonymous

I'm pretty sure people aren't debating that places where the exchange rate or location make it a non issue.

You have to be a literal mouth breather to take a hostel over a 5 star hotel if in the same area. Like for Africa and Malaga, I am doing a beach front hotel because it was only 100 dollars more for 4 nights to have a balcony+breakfast over a local hostel. What I and others are saying is that it depends heavily on the locations, features, and time of year to choose one or the other. Keep every option open but you can easily get a run of the mill hotel experience downtown, saving a fair chunk of change by using a hostel private room.

Where this constantly gets screwed up on SighSee is that the amount of absolute COOMERS going to SEA(or similar priced place) where a hostel is 10/night and a fair-to-decent hotel and losing their shit. Like yeah for some shithole like that go buy a hotel room for the night if you don't want a hostel vibe or whatnot, don't be an idiot. However, people going to travel for their own interests in places such as Scandinavia, down town cities in northern Asia, remote towns, or places during holidays; the price difference becomes real.

My next trip to Japan I am doing all hotels because I booked far enough ahead to where hotel costs were at or same as hostel private rooms. Like 25/night to stay in Azu Hotel in Dotonbori was a steal for a week stay.

Seoyon, 23 years old. Chick from South Korea. Met her in the hostel in ______, fricked her within 3 hours. We fricked in the washroom, then fricked on my bunk bed without a condom on. Then we traveled to ______ and fricked some more without a condom. She is the hottest Korean I fricked. My age: 28.

Claire, 30 years old. Chick from the states but she's Korean. Possibly a virgin because her pussy is so fricking tight. Met her in the hostel we went hiking and ate korean BBQ. My first impression of her, she's fat/chubby. I fricked her in the bathroom. Her knee shakes when I kiss her, she's definitely a virgin. She's super cute ... when she was 20 years old. 10 years later she looks kinda unattractive, this is the lowest I would go. Never again. My age: 28.

    22. Precilia (I forgot her native Korean name), 23 years old. She's south Korean, apparently only fricked 1 or 2 guys. Fricked her on the first date, drink, hold hands, massage and frick in the ______ hostel. She kept saying her pussy hurts. I fricked her twice and cum inside her twice. Condom, no creampie. My age: 28.

You're only a sex offender if your advances are unwanted (if she's an adult, obviously).

I’m married now and haven’t stayed in a hostel for years but there’s definitely some appeal.

In Fukuoka I stayed in a place for about $15 a night that had 4 litre jugs of whiskey piled up in the corner of the common area - all you can drink!

Me and a Brit then went out and pulled two Japanese cuties. Mine had a giant bush that I loved to stroke. I pounded her in the dorm surrounded by mostly Korean tourists, it was the best

is pretty spot on about Fukuoka. especially if it was in the early 2000's

Lotta homeless expect armed gaurds in the target and walgreens. Place is good but smells like weed since smoking is legal and boy do they smoke it up literally every fricking euro ever comes through there and NEEDS TO DO THE SPICY OREGANO LOL!

          Protip's:
Always look like you know what you are doing and where you are going, anyone who asks you something keep walking.
Showers are private don't worry I was confused at the size my first time staying there but seem to be built for an average american(you'll get this when you see it)
For the love of frick please leave politics at the door, like I get it we got problems and shit but please do not base your entire american views because you took holiday in 3 places. Sorry we know don't need to remind us again...
Pike place is very friendly to cash
May will be missing sakura season but the gardens are cool
Don't be weirded out when going to china town or what not and see things in Cantonese and english
keep your wallet in your front pocket

I usually go up there for sakura-con but work there too, if you got any questions about the area lemme know I'll keep an eye on the thread.

thanks for the tips, much appreciated. didn't even know weed was legal in seattle, do people smoke it in the hostel? not sure of the rules. doesn't interest me regardless. is there anything in the way of supermarkets nearby to get food? how chatty are the guests there in your experience? are they mostly american or foreigners? aside from that, any suggestions for things to do/avoid in seattle? never been to sakuracon but i'd be interested in any nerd shit to do

              >do people smoke it in the hostel?
Yeah and boy do they, all the places you listed weed is legal.
              >s there anything in the way of supermarkets nearby to get food?
Pikes place is the best food in town, what kinda shit you looking for? I can list some places off if you got anything in mind you are looking to have, As a burger I have to recommend Katsu burger and bar. Also some good barcades around there, basically a bar but they have old school games like pinball, time crisis, house of the dead, arcade car racing shit, board games, etc.

Target is for local supermarket shit, you're in seattle most places are pulling out due to crime.
              >how chatty are the guests there in your experience?
Very, just don't sit in the smoking area everyone smokes but yeah there is like this small section of tables with a "library" that's the place you want to hang out at.
              >are they mostly american or foreigners?
Mostly foreigners, for whatever reason so many fricking UK and Germans. I don't know what it is but every norweigan or scandi I've met does too many edibles and just has a panic attack.
              >aside from that, any suggestions for things to do/avoid in seattle?
Uhh if you're coming from the airport I have a few, dunno if you got discord but if you wanna chat Teh Cirno#0009 I know all the areas you are going fairly well

I stayed at a hostel in San Francisco and it was infinitely different than any I have stayed at in the like 50 countries I've been to. Had a bunch of blue collar workers who were trying to relocate to the bay and a lot of people who were like mentally unstable and one step from living on the street (or may have just came off the street)

Oh and before you get piss drunk please for the love of frick do it in the hostel. I am not joking when I say there are like a shit ton of stairs. You do not want to do that drunk. Overall it's a good time, nothing too bad just expect to be asked if you have onward travel and your passport ready, generally the email covers everything. My biggest gripe is actually all the Euro's smoking weed and telling me how to run the USA. It's not a big deal but that's probably my largest complaint outside the staff being a bit eh how do I put it stern? they are very straight forward but I know friends from overseas who it cam across wrong. Breakfast is pretty good as well, if you're one of the few to wake up for it.

I prefer hotels, in past some airbnb, but ive been to couple hostels, always picked separate room for safety reasons, almost always traveled with 1-3 extra people, still had bad expiriences with hostels:
    >had one fridge in milan in pretty crowded hostel, see that someone took some of our stuff which i signed just for safe mesures. Another day rolls, we go to have breakfest and i see our shit being devored by a pair of instagram looking travel wannabes (girl with full makeup, dude had some to and it was like 7,30). I go over to them, make an argument about stealing food when theres a stroe right outside the exit, infront of like 15 other people, they offer 10e in compensation, i didnt take the money and say that they are the kind of people that bring bad rep to hostels and should be ashamed of themselves. After the meal guy strolls to me and hands me 20e saying that he feels so shit and i have to take his money. Its not that the stuff was valuable, but i fricking hate petty thieves.
    >venice, we got a room without the shower and man, the shared bathroom was fricking gross, i still see it in my nightmares
Best budget hostels i would recommend are small places (2-4rooms) runned in a apartments. Dunno how it looks now but in past ive been to some places like that in Berlin and Belgrade and they were easly best cheap hostels ive visited. Comfy, city apartment atmosphere, other guest which you could socialize with (meals and booze togheter) or just frick off and close your own room.
Im +30 now and renting rooms (booking, not airbnb) or hotels is the way for me, because i dont want to deal with hostels bullshit for like 5dol/day savings. If you really want to go cheap there are christian youth congregations which offer a bed for like half of what cheapest hostels go. Instead of 1h of dealing with bullshit roomates/hostel staff/similar issues you deal with religious staff, just pick your poison.

I've overall had a very good time going to hostels. I solo travel and want to get to know people and what's a better place than this?
In Romania I met a few cool people and we had nice dinners, drinks hikes and even rented a car to see the mountains.

Just a few days ago I came back from Japan where I stayed at a hostel and met this sociable qt3.14 who just started talking to me in the lounge. We later went to eat desert and drink Sake. I did try to find a private place with her but am an inexperienced spergs and didn't think of the shower room. We just had a few awkward kisses and damn I feel like killing myself.

She's really special. We spoke for like 4 hours. I invited her a few days later on my last night to stay at a hotel bcuz there were no hostels left but she ended up going to a manga cafe instead :((
    Attraction has its' expiration...

Thanks for coming to my Ted talk, I really needed to vent

You can just as easily make social interactions through bars, dating apps, meetups etc. You don't even have to actually sleep at a hostel to attend a hostel's social area anyway. Rather have a good night's sleep.

I think it's worth noting I'm a guy, just incase.
    >Check into hostel
    >Cheapest room was one that has like 5 bunk beds in it
    >Only one other guy in there, some asiatic who looks like he lives there
    >Make small talk, bit of an odd guy but whatever I don't care
    >Lay out sleeping bag to claim a bed and tell asiaticenstein I'm leaving to sightsee
    >Come back after 5 minutes because I forgot my ID in my bag
    >Find the same dude sleeping on my bed
    >Acts shocked as frick, I'm mixed parts confused and a bit pissed off
    >"Oh just seeing what this bed is like, har har."
    >Weirded the frick out at this point, make a mental note that if nobody else comes into this room by night I'm requesting a new room
    >Luckily a small group of Thai people come in, super nice very friendly and excited to be here
    >Play ping pong with them, asiaticenstein comes in eventually and acts really egotistical (i don't know how else to describe his behavior, it was like he was jealous I was hanging out with other people)
    >Some how get coerced into visiting the arcades with him
    >Mainly just went because I was 99% sure he was going to stab me in my sleep if I declined
    >Nothing notable happened, get back to hostel and sleep
    >left the next day
Just the weirdest fricking dude I've ever met. Never staying at a fricking hostel again for as long as I live.
