How do I ensure Scandanavian Airlines won't check my carry-on bag when the overhead bins get full?

How do I ensure Scandanavian Airlines won't check my carry-on bag when the overhead bins get full? It's an international flight. I have medicine in my bag that I need to live and it'll freeze if I put it in the hold. (I could move the medicine to my personal bag but I don't want to check any bags)

I don't want to check my bag because I'm moving overseas longterm and if I lose my carry-on I'll lose a lot of shit. I know the odds of losing it are slim but the impact would be somewhat large. I plan on bringing a lot of medicine

        >freeze if I put it in the hold
        It won't, that's a myth.

What could you possibly have in a carry on that is that valuable? A laptop? Make that your personal item along with whatever you want during the flight.

They won't check your bag without your knowledge. If they say they're going to check your bag, you tell them "That bag contains medication that I need so I won't die."

        This.
If its something you want to have access to during the flight, put it with your "personal" stuff. They aren't going to be like "sorry you can't take your medicine bag because the plane is too full, frick off and die now."

OP, you sound paranoid and mistrustful and inflexible. You aren't going to like living in a foreign country, especially if you're from a northern european country and are moving to somewhere 3rd world where things are disorganized and done "off the cuff." I'm going to say that right now.

          >It won't, that's a myth.
you don't know the freezing point of my medication
          >What could you possibly have in a carry on that is that valuable? A laptop? Make that your personal item along with whatever you want during the flight.
camera, electronics that won't fit in personal item

I don't really care about having access to it during my flight, I'd like to use that as an excuse so they don't check it because I don't want to lose my bag or have a delay
          >OP, you sound paranoid and mistrustful and inflexible.

            >you don't know the freezing point of my medication
the temperature of the cargo hold on an airliner is usually around 15 celsius.
it is irrelevant anyway. having passengers die on flights is usually not good business for airlines so they won't take critical medication off a passenger. just make sure you have any necessary documentation, prescriptions etc with you.
            also

Temperature control isn't always maintained. I've gotten some extremely cold bags back after a flight.

        >I plan on bringing a lot of medicine
        1. most countries restrict travelers to 30 days of supply, and require that you prove that you have a valid prescription.
        2. depending on the medication, it may be illegal where you're going; transit stops can also be a problem in places like Dubai.
        3. medications expire, so don't bring too much.

        As far as
        >wat do
take one bottle of your medication and put it in your pants pocket. That way, you don't have to worry about your entire supply being lost. If your luggage gets lost or the medication gets stolen out of it, you have enough with you to keep yourself alive until you can go see a doctor and get more.

You can have a personal item and a carry-on bag. For a personal item, you generally want something that looks like a laptop bag. These are almost never weighed (but it depends on the region).

Freezing tends not to have the destructive effect that high temperatures have. Unless your medicine is a liquid, I don't think you would need to be concerned, even if you weren't able to keep it by your side in a personal item.

          >1. most countries restrict travelers to 30 days of supply, and require that you prove that you have a valid prescription.
Nope. Customs officers restrict themselves to handwaving and require a beer and a nap after work. It's not their job to know how many pills your doctor said you were supposed to take per day.

          > 2. depending on the medication, it may be illegal where you're going; transit stops can also be a problem in places like Dubai.
Adderall, yes, almost everything else, no. Although Dubai can be weird about powders, so I avoided them while bringing my kilogram of unmarked white powder in my carry-on luggage on my recent intercontinental flight.

I also had about 300 doses of propranolol, 12 doses of sulbutiamine, 40 doses of zopiclone, 60 doses of moclobemide, 100 doses of yohimbine, 120 does of bupropion, 200 doses of magnesium threonate, maybe 160 zinc tablets, a bunch of ritalin. Some of it is in mislabeled bottles, because the originals were half empty, or because I could fit the contents of two bottles in one, etc. I can't even keep track of this stuff. I bought a lot of it in Turkey, so it's gone through customs at least twice.

          > 3. medications expire, so don't bring too much.
They pretty much don't. It's like saying that table salt expires, so make sure to buy it in small quantities.

...To be clear, a personal item is something you can fit under the seat in front of you, so it has nothing to do with your carry-on bag or the capacity of the overhead bins. You don't have to check anything to have a personal item in addition to a carry-on bag. Airlines generally define what they consider to be a personal item and list its maximum dimensions (basically those of a laptop bag).

Thanks. I have a malleable backpack as my personal item and an under-sized carry-on. I don't want them to check my carry-on (if the plane is full) because I'm concerned they'll lose my stuff. Basically I was looking for a good excuse for why they can't check my carry-on in the event that they try to, and my idea was the medicine.

Even if the overhead bins are full and I'm one of the last groups to board? Will they take out someone else's bag from the overhead bins and put mine in if I tell them that? Thanks for the answer I don't usually travel with carry-on

        Anonymous

If the overhead bins actually are so full that they have to start checking carry-ons, they'll usually go after the passengers who are carrying the most stuff. Passengers with multiple pieces of baggage, or very large bags are usually the first to be selected for bag-checking.

If you only have one bag and it's not huge, they probably won't even bother you. If they do, and you tell them that you have life-saving medication, they might just move on to the next passenger.

If you have multiple bags, they'll more than likely check your largest bag, and ask you to transfer your medication, electronics, and flammables into your smaller bag. Then they'll take your larger bag after you've complied.

Worst case scenario you tuck it "under" the seat in front of u and have no room for ur feet the whole flight. You are overthinking it, they're not going to pry the bag from your hands.

If you are moving, then just bring meds for a few days. Have your current doctor/hospital write a medical statement in latin and english about your condition and medication along with copies of any other documentations of your illness. Bring this to your doctor in your new country, And buy the meds in your new place.
