Just don't be an idiot? I spend $3100 on a three week trip to Europe, which includes all plane/train/bus tickets, lodging, meals, fun stuff and gifts for people. That's about $140 a day, which is like 7 or 8 hours of work if you make a decent wage. U can do it.

I work about 15 hours per week, remotely, and make between $5-7k per month. Don’t really like what I do, but I never have to think about saving money or budgeting.

I work remotely in a high-paying industry and live with my parents. My monthly essential expenses (mortgage share / car insurance / cell, etc.) are about an eighth of my total income, so the rest gets saved until I want to go on a trip. I am lucky and not everyone is in this position. If my parents hadn't inherited a house in a good area we would have all been fricked.

I do pretty much the same thing. I don't even pay for cell service or car insurance. Save money at home for 2-3 months, travel for ~6 months. Repeat until the housing market crashes and I pick up my own.

I have my own business + my wife is a wagie.
We usually blow 2k-3k (together) for a 2 weeks holiday, without major restraints (decent enough hotels, mostly decent meals).

My sister in law just blew 5k for a 2 days trip in Disneyland. It's absolutely insane how people spend their money in the most moronic way nowadays.

  10. 1 year ago
    Anonymous

I don't have bills and shit but I can't understand not being able to save.
Say you work full-time and get paid weekly.
All you need to do is save $100 a week.
Unless you're struggling to survive (in which case travel should be the least of your worries) $100 should be very easy to save.
Now if you put aside $100 a week, in one year you will have $5,200.
That is enough for a plane ticket anywhere in the world plus hotel and food unless you're a boomer who wants the most expensive of everything.
People who say they can't afford travel can in fact, afford it. They just can't be bothered saving for it.

Even doing $50 a week lands you $2,600 which is enough for a nice holiday.

Central/South America is pretty cheap if you speak Spanish well enough to avoid tourist hotels and restaurants. If you're willing to be flexible with travel dates, take redeyes, and sit in the worst seats on the plane, you can make it relatively affordable. I made this work back when I worked at a university and had a month's worth of vacation to use but made shitty pay.

I still do this (just turned 26) but it has one fatal downside: American bawds don't consider you a real man if you still live with mom and dad. Sad but true. If I were Spanish or Italian (like actually living there) it'd be different, but literally almost every woman I meet thinks less of me just because I'm not paying $1.5k for some shitty flat. It's getting to the point where I'm considering getting a second remote job just so I can continue to build wealth while paying rent. My dating life is virtually non-existent when I'm in the US. It's sad but at least this way I'll be able to bring back random bawds to my place without awkward introductions.

In medieval armies, chicken was so ubiquitous that it wasn’t even added to the list of foods that the army consumed (like beef, tallow, bread, wine, etc). Chicken breast is unmatched for protein/calorie ratio

    Eat out sparingly
Save cash into accounts during payday

Double dip by using a site like hotels.com for rewards on top of cc points

I can’t tell if this is bait, but I’ve been able to travel at least some since I was young and kind of broke by prioritizing it among things to spend on. Throughout my twenties I might only go on a major trip once every year or two, but when I did I didn’t have to worry about money.

I’ve also gotten a lot of mileage out of being an expat (in four different countries so far, first three in Asia, last five years in Europe) and taking frequent, shorter local/regional trips. These have the advantages of typically being relatively cheap, and very easy to fit into a full-time working life. I’ve worked freelance/as a consultant for most of the last seven years, so I am theoretically location-independent at this point, but even if I don’t do the digital nomad thing I tend to have a lot of control over my schedule.

I also used to get a lot of very short solo excursions out of tacking some personal days onto the ends of business trips, when I had to travel semi-frequently for work.

But my biggest secret nowadays is just to be old and relatively wealthy. I recommend it.
