yeah I really don't understand business class, it isn't even first class to get a bed or something its just meaningless.

Honestly, it’s not terrible because I like what I do, and I save enough to retire early. Burnout rate in the field is absolutely insane, though, and I don’t think it’s right at all for most people. I’ve been able to balance it with my other interests and having a relationship to this point, but that’s partially because I have no desire to make partner and am ultimately just doing my time until I have the financial security to slow down.

It has afforded me the ability to do things that I’d never have been able to do otherwise, but I don’t think I’d make it if I felt like I had to keep up the hours for the next 25 years or something.

          So, decent, I guess?

I travel for work a lot, fly the same airline every time, and use that to get upgrades. I also funnel all my monthly expenses through a travel credit card for the points. Literally just set up all your monthly bills through one of these cards, pay off the balance every month, and in a years time that’s at least one business class upgrade per year ezpz.

I make $150k a year doing a %100 WFH job and thinking about doing the digital nomad thing. I could just bounce back and forth from cheap ass Eastern Europe to SEA countries and live like a king. Am I thinking wrong on this? What’s the catch in doing this?

      Anonymous

$100K after tax or 8k/month. Unless you want to be forced to work until you die, you'll need to save 4K a month (I assume you want to retire before you're fricking 65), so you have 4K leftover.

3K after flights and travel insurance. That's not living "like a king." And you'll get fired when they catch on. Surrounded by degeneracy you'll also feel to stay in-demand and will get fired either way.

        Anonymous

3k a month in Eastern Europe or sea won't get you "living like a king" but will mean you can live in nice places and don't have to worry about money. I don't know what it gets you in a tier 1 city (London, NYC etc) but I'd gamble you'd have a much better time.

Back when this board opened up it was 18 year old backpackers hitchhiking and sleeping on park benches swapping tales of public sex and working for accommodation.

Now these same people are in their mid 30s and either went to college and made something of themselves or got rich thru autistic means (crypto, IT work, drop shipping, etc) and due to being autistic morons they have no wife or kids to worry about.

      >Back when this board opened up it was 18 year old backpackers hitchhiking and sleeping on park benches swapping tales of public sex and working for accommodation.
      This.

I started posting on SighSee about 10 years ago, when I was 18 or 19. When I was in university, I traveled on a tight budget: I hitchhiked across Europe, camped in the Balkans, and almost-exclusively lived off street food. Now that I'm older, I live abroad and work remotely. Even if I'm traveling in a developing country, I find myself spending more money to ensure that I have the amenities needed to work for a few hours per day (quiet, clean, stable and fast internet connection, etc).

I still enjoy doing RealTraveler shit from time to time, but it's not as easy to bump off the grid now that I'm married and have responsibilities that go beyond "don't get beheaded lol." Plus, I've seen enough of the world that I just don't have the same impulsion to constantly do everything all the time. Sometimes taking things slow and being comfortable is just as fun for me as going go on a 3,000km motorbike trip. I'm sure a lot of oldergays are in somewhat similar positions.

Also, this board has become completely infested with LARPers and /misc/tards since 2016/2017. A lot of posts and threads aren't worth taking seriously. For example, you always see "richgays" blabbering about how "pathetic" people who travel alone or stay in hostels are, when there's nothing strange or taboo about doing either. Personally, I see poorgay-tier travel as a sort of initiation phase or coming-of-age ritual: it's something that almost all of us do. Eventually most folks get older and want more comfort and convenience, but there's nothing weird about doing that stuff a little longer, provided that you act your age and don't try too hard to fit in with 18-year-olds on babby's first trip (e.g., some of the coolest travelers I've met have been 40+ y/o guys hitchhiking across the world and shit).

        Anonymous

I make jokes about poorgays, but I was poorgay travelling for years. I made a bunch of cash off the stock bubble of 2020-2021, so now I stay in nice places instead of shithole hostels, but really who cares. I'm not exactly balling it either unless I get super drunk in a coomer place and don't care. Then I look at my bank account the next day and weep.

Are any people actually paying 10k+ out of their own pocket for first / business class international flights? They’re 10-20k...

      Anonymous

Nah, but I’ve gotten free bumps to first class multiple times this year, and I regularly get bumped to business on status. If you fly a lot and always fly the same airline (I lived in a hub city until very recently), it accumulates pretty quickly.

    >How the frick is everyone here able to afford fricking business class tickets on travel and stay in the nicest of places???
    They aren’t, period.

Apart from a few LARPers who pretend that they buy biz or first-class tickets for themselves all the time with their large quantities of personal cash, most people who frequently fly business or better have someone else, generally an employer, paying for it most of the time, and thus they accumulate points/miles/status to upgrade themselves on their non-work trips without actually paying full fare out of pocket.

And as for “staying in the nicest places,” almost nobody who travels for work does that—they stay in bland midrange/four star business hotels, and/or visit poor places where reasonably nice hotels don’t cost very much. And of course nicest is very relative when it comes to accommodations.

they're from the US, 90% of this website is. they take a course on some random coding language, move to a city and suddenly they're earning some wild amount we europoors wouldn't dream of, the taxes are low to non existent and they're incels so no wives or children to spend on

But rent and food in those big american cities are horribly expensive as i heard. So it would be best to get remote job straight in american company and move to some europoor country. But then i heard remote job is slowly dying, and companies like this won't hire you like that unless you are certified specialist with years of experience

I just paid an extra $100 for a Delta Comfort flight since it's 14hrs. I flew comfort once before when it was the same price as economy. It was nice. Treating myself

Most people I met that travel like OP described don't earn their own income. They're usually people removed from the value of a dollar. Even if you're quite successful, I don't think you would be so wasteful.

If you like to get drunk on long flights Delta Comfort is good ass value. 4 drinks and you break even. If you are smashing 10-12 on a 10+ hour flight like I do then it’s nothing but upshot.

I am pretty sure outside of the Anglosphere, Western Europe and Eastern Europe that being a lecherous, degenerate drunk is looked down upon instead of seen as "cool".

If when you travel you think a long plane ride is a good opportunity to down 10 or more drinks, what other inappropriate moments do you drink? Job interviews?

Btw, I am pretty sure simply eating and especially drinking effects you differently at extreme altitude. I saw a documentary episode of a tv program about how being at altitude alters taste perception and how scientific and technical it is for airlines to try to produce tasty meals for the altitude that commercial flights fly at.

It is mostly LARP'ng liars. The net is even more full of LARP'ing bs than real life because they can get away with it more because of anonymity and lack of context. If someone at my workplace LARPs about how they are always on business class flight everyone will know they are lying because we know their base salary and about how much overtime they are pulling. On the internet you don't have such context so everyone thinks they can claim they have 8+ inch dicks, that they make $200,000+ a year, that when they go outside and women try to impale their pussies on their dick, etc.

I booked last minutes tickets from Newark>Athens. I had to overpay because of it and ended up paying $700+ for coach/economy. Out of curiosity I checked how much first/business class was and it was $6,000+. I think even people making low six figures would balk at that. Only people making $300,000+ would consider such an expense worthwhile for an 8-9 hour flight.

how much of an inexperienced moron are you guys to think you have to be wealthy to fly business or first class every once and a while. airline miles credit cards, loyalty programs, or just checking for upgrades when you get to the terminal can get you there pretty cheap. taking the price of first class fares at completely face value when perusing kayak isn't an accurate depiction of what you can expect to pay. .jfc just do a bit of research.

I had frick all growing up, parents were moron immigrants who gave me a host of mental health issues, worked min wage for years after graduating high school. Finer things in life require money so I just seeked it out. There are a lot of jobs that pay 60k+ per year that require zero IQ. Trade school is literally full of illiterate blacks, high as shit. And they pay for your school in 90% of cases.

Got tired of it, went to college and got a cushy desk job. If you’re actually smart, you can become a software dev or some shit. Literally just go for jobs that pay well and are in demand. Your life is going to be complete shit if you don’t.
