How to avoid getting your shit stolen while at hostels?

>travelling Japan for a few weeks (first time travelling)
>staying in hostels/capsule hotels for most of my trip
>really worried about someone snatching my phone/wallet off of my bed while I sleep

What's the best method to ensure that none of valuables get stolen while at a hostel?
>inb4 use lockers
Lockers which are opened with keys....keys that you would keep with you on your bed, right? So the problem still persists. Would there be any way to ensure that my valuables are 100% safe and not at any risk of being stolen?

This is the correct answer. Only dead broke kids under 22 should ever stay in hostels. Get a hotel or a airbnb you absolute rube

hostels nearly always have lockers you can lock your shit in
also realistically, the only valuable things you have on you are your phone and wallet, so as long as you have those safe you're good
no-one's interested in your bag full of dirty clothes

    1. Japan is the last country you would have to be concerned in to have your shit stolen
    2. In the case that someone does try to steal your shit, how would you not wake up?

Japan doesnt attract the type who would do that. Hostels and capsule hotels are also almost an even mix of locals and foreigners due to the large domestic tourism industry & businessmen who missed their last train home

Have you not watched the news? Japan is flooded with the dumbest fuckers right now. Just a few days ago a Muslim from Gambia destroyed a shrine. A bunch of Americans also got arrested for running a drug trafficking ring this week.

pick any country in the world, ANY COUNTRY, and I guarantee that country will be a place where your things will more likely to be stolen. Japan is literally the last country in the entire world where that would happen, and even more unlikely almost near zero possibility it would happen while you are sleeping.

walk around town, look at the bicycles. do you see them locked up?

Dude if you stay at a hostel and want to leave your bag while you are sightseeing, there will be places that literally put your bag up against the glass wall facing the street. It will be there the whole day in the middle of the city. No one will care. No one.
You can leave your phone to have it charge while you do your laundy at an unmanned laundromate.
Again, nobody will touch it. It will be charged by the time you go back.
    I can go on.

Forget whatever shithole you are from. Japan is Japan.

Just put everything in your locked and then put the key under your pillow. Unless you're a super heavy sleeper, nobody is gonna be able to get under your pillow without you noticing, and there's practically no chance anybody will even try anyway. If not that, then do what the other anon said and put the keys in your ass every night.

Hostels are acceptable while you're 20 or younger
Above that unless you're total waste of space, you should really have a proper job to be able to afford a hotel and not have to degrade yourself like that
      >inb4 b-but muh social experience

That's just unlikely. Sleep with your stuff under your pillow. People are not that desperate to rob you. Theft does happen in hostels as occasionally there are broke backpackers, but it'll be "crime of opportunity" kind of stuff if things are left lying around or unlocked.

Never did capsule before, but in hostels my go to is a sleeping with fanny pack for phone, wallet, passport. Has the added bonus of when you wake up in the night to get a drink or pee, you already have key on you so cant get locked out.
For all the insecure homosexuals who are trying to age guard their hostels, I'll keep staying in hostels in my mid 20s, maybe even late 20s. I'll find drinking buddies, use the money I saved to go on an extra day trip, and then get back and sleep like a rock regardless of snorers because I'm not a bitch.
Only negative of hostels I've had in hostel trips across several countries is did miss out on getting laid in Italy not having a place to bring her back to while her roommates were home. Realistically that's the biggest risk of staying in a hostel.

You are neurotic for no good reason, very rare to get your shit stolen. Usually shit faced druken people who might have lost the stuff themselves are the victims.

I've probably stayed at more hostels than anybody in this thread, and have never had anything stolen. The best advice is:
    >Always take your backpack with you during the day (can't steal something which isn't there!)
    >At night, put the backpack between you and the wall (makes it difficult to reach over and grab it)
    >Tie some loose straps to the frame if it's possible, or tuck a strap into your socks
    >Put everything you have in your pockets into your duvet cover, and make sure it gets all the way to the bottom
    >Dont use lockers, I'm a self-trained lockpicker, and believe me, these cheapo lockers hostels use are easy game for even noobs
