I am in a strange situation. I have managed to live my entire life without a bank account. I used a pay card that I would immediately withdraw cash from every paycheck.

Now I have a large amount of money in cash, but I realize this create problems. I want to travel to the Philippines, but it does not seem wise to take the equivalent of 2000 dollars in cash on my person.

So long story short, is there anyway to create an account for travel where I can convert 2000 dollars?

Are you willing to open a bank account?

Walk into any bank, ask a teller to open an account for you, deposit $2000 of funds, get ATM card, fly to Philippines, spend money, fly home.

If you refuse to open a bank account because
        >stubborn
then I don't know what to tell you.

I'd almost suggest Bitcoin, but the Philippines is a pain in the ass about it, and the price is on a downtrend due to the Federal Reserve's interest rate hikes that are going to keep happening for the foreseeable future.

you can't just get an account like that
          they require
          >ID
          >proof of address
          >phone number
          >credit check
          >minimum deposit
          >minimum balance for some

going to the bank is not like going to buy bread at the store

Well OK, so a driver's license, a bill, your basic info, and the money you plan to deposit...what's hard about that.

You need to add a zero to your 2000 dollars to have customs care about you.

Everyone I've talked to has emphatically told me not to take an amount of money that large through the airport.

Am I just being memed at by boomers?

They don't care about anything under $10,000

It depends on whether you're worried about "the law," getting scammed by a customs officer, or getting robbed by a taxi driver?

You can easily distribute 2000 dollars on you and in your luggage in a way that you won't lose much in case you get pickpocketed.
About customs, look at whatever booking site for your average 4 start chain hotel, check out the prices for a junior suite and you will quickly find that 2000 dollars isn't an outrageous amount to carry on you across borders.

Your biggest problem is getting robbed, but just don't flash money and hide it when you have ugly pinoys over. 2000$ is nothing, if they ask just say it's your travel budget, at most they will ask about your itinerary.

      Chill, 2000 USD isn't anything

Such is the life of an unskilled wagie in a declining empire.

Go online and open a checking account with chase. A moron could do it. Then you can go to an ATM or bank branch and deposit your cash

      Charles schawb you autistic moron.

Yeah, this seems like the answer. Except I think I am going with Capital One instead Chase/Charles.

      Thanks :^)

2k will last you about a week depending on how susceptible you are to hookers and scammers.

You could get a prepaid visa credit card. But you'll be shit out of luck if someone uses it for fraud. You'll never get the money back.

Your best option, by far, is to open a secured credit card. You don't need credit to open one. You give them like $1000 and they'll give you a credit card with a $1000 limit. You can open two different accounts. You are much more protected from fraud with a credit card than with any other form of payment. They cant reverse fraudulent charges in 48 hours. You also get insurance coverage for renting a car.

Op here. I'm shocked this thread hasn't 404'd, so I guess I'll update you guys.

I tried to open an account with Capitol One, but a few days later I got an e-mail saying my account was closing due to discrepancies with my Social Security card.

(I can't really elaborate without doxxing myself, but suffice to say the Social Security office made an error that needs to be fixed, but I just don't like fixing before I go on vacation.)

I thought about opening an account with Wells Fargo in person so I could physically show them the error that SS made, but I actually discovered that Wells Fargo charges more than my paycard for foreign ATMs.

So, I found a way to jerry-rig my paycard to accept deposits via Western Union, in increments of $900 dollars with a $4 dollar fee.

TL;DR: I just ended up continuing to use the pay card.

    t. unskilled wagie.
