I don't get traveling.

I don't really get traveling. This post may sound silly but I promise these are legitimate questions. I've only travelled within my own country (Canada) so I don't really have much experience.

1. What do you do in the place you travel to? Is it essentially just walking around and enjoying the sights?

2. How is it possible for (non-rich) people to travel for long periods of time? Some girl in my uni classes is taking the year off to spend a year "traveling Asia". She's not rich, and wouldn't this be incredibly expensive? I don't get how this is possible.

3. Also, isn't traveling to several countries in a row very complicated? I'm of the understanding that you would need to get all sorts of visas and travel documents and book flights and organize accommodation, currency and transportation, and to me this seems so stressful I can't imagine even enjoying it.

4. (Sort of a bonus question) What's a good, cheap place to travel to from Canada for someone inexperienced with international travel?

    1. personnaly i rent a bike, and free roam, checking google maps finding a place that looks cool and ride for it, i just feel free.

2.simple go in poor countries, where i go i eat for 3$ a day, you can find rooms for 10$ in many countries around the world, i rent rooms by month it's sometimes cheaper than 3 nights at some hotels, but no service, you have to do your laundry etc.

3.Canada are permitted everywhere, with a passport you can probably travel in more than 100 countries. travel documents are digital now, you just need a smartphone, you can find accomodation on place, no need to reserve you will always find to sleep (in asia at least)

4.malaysia, thailand, senegal, are pretty "safe" easy restrictions and cheap.

Not OP but how do people find cheap flights? I typically fly delta if I can help it but even with budget airlines sometimes a one way flight can be $1000+

some flight search engines let you search +-3days instead of fixed dates.
One way is sometimes more expensive than go and back for some reasons.

I’ve tried the flexible date searches. 1 or 2 days is fine but sometimes you have to plan traveling a week on either side of your desired date.

It’s weird with how you search. Buying the exact same flight on a one-way, multi-city, or round trip all show wildly different prices and don’t make sense.

Idk, usually end up just sticking with Delta since they’re easy to work with

last minute flights are always going to be expensive. people book flights months in advance for cheap. also midweek flights will be cheaper in general than weekend flights.

That’s the thing. I bought a flight to Poland 3months in advance and it was still $1000. I never buy last minute flights due to the ridiculous high markups but it seems booking far in advance only makes a couple hundred euro difference

It's cheaper booking last minute, haha you paid $1000 it should have been $500

mind telling me your region and I could give you some tips to save money on flying

google flights has a cool "explore" option where you can search destinations from a specific airport within a certain price. I wanted to go to Asia from the western US as cheaply as possible, so I knew SFO or LAX would be the best airports to fly from. I found some $650 flights to Bangkok on most days but then randomly, there was a SFO to Saigon flight with a minimal layover in Seoul for $500.

It takes a little bit of knowledge on the flight market in your area to know where to fly out of and it usually is more expensive to fly from your local airport to your larger international airport then abroad in the same booking than booking the two legs separately.

I started in Idaho Falls and flights to Vietnam were $1500 one way or $3k round trip but if I simply took a $100 flight to Oakland, I could get across the bay to SFO for $15 and get a much cheaper flight.

    1. Yes, just absorbing the sights, sounds, smells.
    2. Even if not splitting costs, Asia is extremely cheap. The dollar goes 10x as far as it would go elsewhere.
    3. If you have a first world passport then most other countries offer visa free entry for X amount of days which completely eliminates the Visa problem. Flights are really the only thing that needs to be pre-planned. Everything else you just need an ATM or a SIM card.
    4. Literally anywhere. Just get out of your home and comfort zone for once and it will change your life.

    1. Different people do different things. You can see 'sites' you can do activities - hiking/swimming, taking a class (cooking, crafts, martial arts, sport, whatever takes your fancy), you can go to restaurants/cafes/bars and try local food and drink, you can meet people and make friends, you can be a sex tourist if that's your thing. The key thing is to relax, have fun and enjoy some time away from your day to day back home.

    2. There are different methods. Some people just travel to very cheap destinations and don't spend much - after flights your main costs are accommodation and food - you can stay in very cheap hostels and eat very cheaply if you choose to, its actually quite affordable. Alternatively, some people do working holidays where they spend a few months working somewhere and then a few months travelling on that income.

    3. You have to do research. This is part of the appeal for people travelling to the EU, the schengen zone makes it very simple. Personally, I organise my visas, flights and accommodation before I go so I don't even think about it when I'm there. In the age of ATMs, you rarely need to think about currency exchange anymore. Research a bank with no international withdrawal fees - you can then just use the card to withdraw in any country without paying extra.

    4. Southeast Asia is cheap and has extensive tourist infrastructure - Thailand for example is one of the most visited countries in the world.

Just did my first travel too to meet friends and I don’t get it either. This is probably more a problem with me and lacking a soul though
