This. Don’t go to Thailand unless you want to see elephants treated like 1800s cattle.

Don’t go to Thailand for any reason, unless you’re a coomer who loves to overpay.

I've heard that they even have fake sanctuaries that claim to rescue elephants from abusive captors, but they only act nice to the elephants in front of white tourists, and go back to beating the shit out of them after closing time.

Yes, I had a similiar experience in nepal. I guess our group arrived too early and there was an elephant in chains. I asked them wtf, they told me its because of his safety

You can't really interact with African elephants, but you can see tons of them in preserves. Uganda/kenya/Tanzania are relatively civilized and English speaking.

If you want to frick around with elephants and socialize with them, you can do that in Thailand with the smaller Indian elephant species.

Just returned a week ago OP. Kruger National Park in South Africa is your place. The elephants are overpopulated by 3x. Fly to Johannesburg then it's a six hour drive north east from there.

in my case it was Zambia, near Victoria Falls
they basically just wander around. the locals have to deal with them on a daily basis. one day i saw a group of people on bikes waiting nervously at the end of a road. i asked what they were waiting for- basically they had all just been to a market and had all their stuff in the baskets on their bikes (very common way to get around in rural areas) but they had spotted an elephant further along the road and apparently sometimes they just steal all the stuff from the baskets as people ride by
i saw quite a few by roadsides etc. pic related, a big boy that kind of loomed unexpectedly out of the undergrowth as we drove past. i think they do it on purpose to make people nervous

yes, it was awesome. i was already working in lusaka so it was just a side trip to livingstone that i squeezed in but i would quite happily have spent a few more days downing wienertails while watching hippos swim around in the zambezi river and zebras graze on the lawns
pic related, rhinos chilling in the afternoon sun
