Check out / stay on sukhumvit. Go to Nana plaza for a couple nights. If you like that a lot, Pattaya is that but nonstop. If you don't like that then don't worry about Pattaya.

If you are based in Bangkok then take a day and use the river ferry to explore a bit. Hop on and off, go see some temples, Chinatown, feed the catfish. Don't bother with a tourist day pass, just jump on any orange flag boat and pay onboard.
Skip the Grand Palace and Wat Arun. Floppy hat tourist traps and full of chinks.
Have a night out. Avoid Khao San but Soi Rambuttri next adjacent street is lively but not so many bucket drinking zoomers and more decent food and live music. Some great live music bars around, btw Adhere the 13th is a fantastic little blues bar 5 mins way.
You can get a cheap train ticket to Ayutthaya, about 3 hours north of Bangkok. More ruins and temples but worth a look.
Take the skytrain one day and check out Lumphini Park and maybe go to a mall.
Although advertised everywhere, avoid minibus day trips. The drivers are always late picking you up, the destinations usually overcrowded and you'll be rushed.
Chiang Mai is cool but if you've only got a week I'd say skip it. Sleeper train takes 12 hours or you've got to fly there and back.
Pattaya is an ungodly sithole of epic proportion. If you're not a coomer I'd advise to avoid it like the plague. Although it's not far to get to from Bangkok if you're so inclined. If you're merely curious, about the coomer culture you can walk the length of Soi Cowboy in 5 minutes. It's in Sukhumvit.

Posting here because I'm also coming to Bangkok a month. Difference is, I'll be staying for 17 days total. I definitely want to go both Bangkok and Chiang Mai. First. If you got $5k always get 2 girls, never seen them more than once. Get bar girls from places you’ve checked out and TALK to the mamasan.
