>I spent 18 months and $34,000 traveling the world but was burnt out and unhappy—this was my No. 1 mistake

>In August 2022, I quit my dream job. Looking to heal my burnout and find happiness beyond work, I spent a year and a half — and $34,000 — exploring South America and Asia.

>For the first several months, I dashed through my bucket list destinations, hiking to snow-capped peaks and glacial lakes in Patagonia and bathing in warm waters in Thailand.

>But the thrill quickly petered out. I stood on the dramatic coastal bluffs of Jeju Island, Korea, and felt apathy. While roaming Japan, I peered with jealousy at people on their laptops in Starbucks.

>I was living my dream, but feeling burned out and hollow. That’s when I realized I’d made a huge mistake: I had changed my circumstances, but not my state of mind.

I did the same thing. Ultimately, the meaning of life is not work, and is not travel.

Humans are builders. It’s in our DNA. It’s one of the first cognitive tests performed on babies. If you’re not building things within a year of your birth, doctors start checking for mental moronation and/or physical disabilities. I’ve never met a tradesman who hated his work. He might hate his job or his boss. He might hate going home to his shrill fatass wife. But the work of building is ingrained in our soul. You need to create.

yea women are fricking stupid. Not to say you shouldn't see the beauty of mother nature before it takes a real special level of moronation to think she'll have a spiritual awakening just by taking a plane ride.

at least she learned something, which is a hell lot better than most women.

I believe it. I own a home and my mortgage payment is less than rent would cost. My home mortgage interest rate is locked at 2.7%. I have $400K in equity. I live in a safe and White neighborhood. I have $50K in stocks. I have $50K in cash in the bank. I have $70K/year in passive income from a structured settlement. I don't work. I save half of my income just because I don't feel the need to spend all of it (it's not forced).
But I am not happy. I only realized this when my gf, who I loved (still love, actually) more than anyone or anything in this world, dumped me. Without a loving woman or children to take care of, what the fricking point of all that I have?
I wish I were dead, honestly. morons say I should travel but I know that won’t help.

Money, experiences, or possessions cannot make man happy.

No ambition. No spine. That's why you got dumped. All of your accolades are handed to you. You don't do shit. If you have money and don't do shit, it's going to be hard to maintain a relationship. She probably felt as dry and bored as this post. Sad.

Travelling too much is stressful, there are some documentaries and social media profiles about people with motorhomes and they don't even hide it.

Specially if you know your future is uncertain (after she quit the job and everything) and it's just escapism.

OP didn’t include the most important part.
    > It dawned on me that I was approaching my sabbatical the same way I’d approached my career — like a workaholic.

Back home, working doggedly in pursuit of more success and prestige had turned me into an anxious mess unable to live in the present. Now I was making the same missteps by traveling on a meticulously planned, militaristic schedule.

I know people who travel like this, and I refuse to travel with them.

    Many such cases.
Unhappy people travel to get away from their unhappy lives.
But they can't get away from their unhappy selves.

Not sure how this is political so TKD I guess.

that's why money only make some people happy, the rest are just as miserable regardless if they got $100 or a billion in the bank. point of money is to fund all of your hobbies to the fullest extent
