I want to travel all of the Balkans, what are some destinations that are worth seeing? Are there any countries not worth seeing? I plan on staying for 1-3 months is that enough time to thoroughly travel this region of Europe?

Coastal Croatia is beautiful, you can go down the coast and stop through all the nice beach towns in homestays (need some Slavic language ability to do this - my family had no issues speaking Slovak). Ended up in Podgora when I went. I've heard that it's become pretty fricked in tourist season though, it's the new beach destination for Western Europeans which pushes the price up and makes it very crowded. I haven't been since 2014 so I haven't seen that first hand.

The rest of this is second-hand, so take with a grain of salt, but all comes from people I know and trust:

Mate of mine just spent a few weeks in Rovinj, coastal town near the Italian border. Cold atm but he said he loved it there. Wasn't impressed with Zagreb.

I've heard from multiple people that Belgrade, Serbia is a really charming city, affordable, good nightlife.

MonteBlack has become the new beach destination for the former Eastern Bloc tourists who used to go to Croatia for the summer but got priced out by Western Europeans. Supposedly just as gorgeous as Croatia but cheaper and great hiking.

Lake Ohrid in Macedonia is meant to be beautiful, with an old Byzantine-era monastery somewhere along the shoreline. Pain in the ass to get to apparently.

Avoid the major tourist islands in Greece. They're tourist traps that offer a more expensive version of what you can get on a hundred other lesser-known Greek islands more peacefully.

It would take at least a year. You could spend 3 months in romania alone

Serbia (Belgrade) for nightlife and a cute, historical euro city.

Croatia or MonteBlack (ie. Kotor) for great nature.

Great people all around, especially if you can speak a few phrases of their respective language.

I've been to Albania twice now because

    >the weather is amazing,
    >the prices are incredibly low,
    >the nature is beautiful.

Most large cities aren't particularly interesting outside of the old town, but I've seen some gems like Berat (and I've heard good things about Gjirokastër too). I haven't done much hiking there (my previous two visits were fairly short and were mostly about sightseeing and chilling at the beach), but it's supposed to be amazing.

I think I spent $295 total (including flights, bus/gas to airport, accommodation and everything else) on the first trip (9 day visit) and $139 on the second one (3 day visit). I give the place my highest recommendation!

I have heard Albania is good. I also heard that they really like Americans too is this true?

I wouldn't know, I'm not American, but it sounds reasonable because of the Kosovo war and stuff

Can you provide info on your accommodations? I am planning a trip in a couple of months to Albania but I am not finding any place other than a private room from AirBNB that could get close to 139$ for three days.

Delete your airbnb ap first then I will tell you . I can see hotels for less than $100 for a week in berat and others for $160 for a week including breakfast in girokaster and I only looked for 1 minute

Hotels? No, I see a few hostels that match the price you are talking about. I have not found any hotels that go for under 20 dollars a night in Berat, which is not exactly a place worth staying long-term anyways. Meanwhile on AirBNB I found an entire apartment for about 365$ in Tirana for an entire month.

Just got back from a major trip across the Balkans a few months ago.

    Places that I've been...

    -Ulcinj, MonteBlack
    -Budva, MonteBlack
    -Belgrade, Serbia
    -Sarajevo, Bosnia
    -Mostar, Bosnia
    -Dubrovnik, Croatia
    -Split, Croatia
    -Zagreb, Croatia

My favorite places were Budva, Belgrade, Mostar and Split (especially Mostar and Split). Zagreb was very very cool too, but super fricking cold at the time, so didnt really get a chance to check it out properly like I would have liked to.

My least favorite place was Sarajevo, but still worth checking out just to cross it off the list I guess. I dont want to talk bad about the city because they went through absolute hell not too long ago, and the people are super nice and humble, but I found the city to be pretty lacking in "common sense" I guess, for lack of a better word, and its an extremely frustrating place where things don't work like they should and nothing seems to make sense. Also they try too hard to be "Western European" and the place is littered with lame French Bistros and Italian Restaurants and finding good local food besides fricking chivapi sausage in shitty tourist trap style cafes is fricking impossible. Not a bad city, but not very "comfortable" and I just couldn't synchronize with the place. Dubrovnik was pretty nice but overrated and expensive and boring, the place is practically tailor made for bored aging German wine aunts to snap Instagram selfies of themselves and nothing else.

Oh and if you go to Serbia, be prepared to be taken in the back area and questioned by your local Customs/Border Agents upon return to your home country. Really though, Belgrade is no different than anywhere else in Europe- hostels, cafes, restaurants, bars, clubs, museums, etc, so there is nothing to be afraid of. But just a head ups that its geopolitically frowned upon to go there right now and you might be specifically questioned/interviewed why you were there.
